    The ferret vs. rabbit problem was a huge mistake for reasons not mentioned in the video. Ferrets are nocturnal predators, so they hunt at night. Meanwhile, rabbits are diurnal (forage during the day) and find/make burrows to sleep in at night. Therefore, ferrets found other prey such as the kakapo.

    oh no not the golf courses!

    • @johnandan1594
      @johnandan1594 9 лет назад +37

      +chsxtian certain golf courses are strategically placed near airports so in case of planes needing an emergency landing the golf course can provide a clearing. In fact Harrison Ford who had a recent plane accident was saved because of the fact that a golf course was nearby and they could land in a clearing instead of on top of buildings or trees. So don't make fun of the golf courses cause there are more to things than you know :)

      ***** hey mate I don't like wasting it like that either but I don't plan cities. And if people are going to build golf courses anyways why not place them in places that could use them for a clearing. Also, if you want to talk about wasting land talk about suburban housing cause that shit is the reason why cities have to clear out thousands of acres of land.

    • @imacds

      +Deathcap Rabadon (Deathcap9087) I always thought that the reason golf courses were near airports was becasue rich people owned both golf courses and airports for their private planes.... interesting......

      Probably eventually, but unfortunately by that point it will have very badly devastated the ecosystem and driven some species to extinction. Also it’s not that simple, like catfish in France, the catfish are so vicious that in some areas they’ve basically wiped out the entire local fish population. But instead of running out of food and dying, the catfish have gotten even stronger and resorted to cannibalism and even hunting birds that land on the shore.
      Or like in my country where Water-hyacinths are choking out the wetlands, which is a big problem for the species that need to live there, but will also cause massive damage to humans that rely on them for fishing, flood control, filtering silt and bacteria, etc. Though the hyacinths will probably have to die eventually, they would have taken countless animal and human lives and maybe done irreparable damage before they do

    For anyone dealing with a Yellow Crazy Ant infestation I have a new discovery to share! Last night I steamed some crab legs and left the steam pot on the stove lazily, this morning there were my nemesis the yellow crazy ants on the pot. When I picked up the pot I noticed something though, quite a few ants had drown in the shallow water. So I decided on an experiment and put a small pile of cane sugar into the water to dissolve and set the pot outside near an area with lots of ant activity, it's only been out there for 3 hours and there are hundreds and hundreds of drowned ants already. I think I'll add a little water when they get thick enough to create an island of bodies, hopefully it works because nothing else has so far. I wonder if other meat waters would have the same effect?

    it's probably because i have a living wall all around my house and that thing attracts all kinds of insects. if that's the reason then i'm stuck with them, cuz i'm not getting rid of my green wall.
    the only good thing about these ants is that they can't bite/sting a person. they're too dumb and their mouth claw things are too small for that. doesn't keep them from trying if provoked, though.

      ants with super glue armor on their torso.
      ants that have been frozen then unfrozen.
      ants that have been boiled then frozen then unfrozen...
      ants that i have trapped alive inside my clear hand vaccum cleaner chamber (kinda like under the dome, except with no way out and no food to begin with) and in company of a spider...
      two-legged ants that have earned my forgiveness because of their tenacity and will to live (i bet they died soon thereafter anyways).
      ants without their fat butt parts.
      ants with no leg joints (i cut their legs at the height of the first joint)...
      soft ants from being dipped in hand skin cream...
      ants without their bitey scissors thingies.
      black ants from spray paint.
      ants with floral scent.
      peppery ants.
      anyway. you get the idea. played god a lot.

    • @teghan05
      @teghan05 4 года назад

      Yellow crazy ants spray formic acid and they really hurt, I would suggest putting vinegar on your doorways as they don't like walking on it.
      An easy ant trap is to get a large enough container, fill it half way with sugar/honey water then put baby power mixed with rubbing alcohol on the inside about an inch or two from the top.
      Have you ever considered they moved into your living wall? They make leaf nests so if you see an odd collection of leafs that are held together with 'spiders web' it will most likely be one of their nests.

      That fungus is scary as hell and not a good idea to mess with. It also wouldn't work, since it mainly just takes over workers since queens usually stay in the ground. Also, when Cordyceps becomes an invasive species, what then?

  • @ClubSealing
    @ClubSealing 9 лет назад

    Invasive species aren't always things that harm human interests, they're organisms that take over the niche of other organisms and create competition that wasn't there before. They can even be native species that adapt to take over other niches they didn't previously fill. We just happen to care about the exotic ones that affect us directly.

If it isn't from poisoning them with lethal substances, it could be with overdosing them with healthy substances. They could inject queens with genetics which make their offsprings territorial. Or just limit the crazy ant's acsess with extreme methods such as burning parts of the forest or removing food sources.

    Most of the fauna and flora that migrated around the planet did it without human assistance or with minimal help, with some notable exceptions. You're correct that the best defense is knowledge. The knowledge of how to prevent transplantation, minimal collateral damage in dealing with it and the best adaptation techniques we can imploy. Nature is too complex to think we're going to control it.

    Very interesting video! And to those that are bad-mouthing others for their opinions of their own kind, meaning us humans, don't oversimplify what they mean: sure, we are all human but if you claim that means we should be "accepting" of all people is ridiculous and unrealistic. In the real world in which we live, people hold extraordinarily diverse opinions and attitudes on a wide-range of topics.
    There are many kinds of moralities that exist--plenty of bloodshed and loss of life occurs at many levels because of it. People "hate" other people (hence, humans) not because they aren't proud of what they are or that they want to die (what an oversimplification) but because a lot of people abuse the privilege of being on the most powerful species on the planet. The killing of children, the rape and butchering of women, the slaughter of villages.... you can love humans without loving everything about being one.
    Apologies for the rant, just had to clarify on the others' behalf. I talk about philosophy and the such if you're interested, check it out I won't let you down. Good day to you all :)

    Swarms of Robo-bees are terrorising the country, so we have developed Mecha-spiders to prey on them
    Later still...
    The Mecha-spider plague is very unfortunate, but can be solved by introducing predatory Bionic-weasels

    simply because we dont generally consider ourselves to be a threat to ourselves doesnt mean that we're correct. we could very well be 'invasive' and be, simultaneously, too arrogant to recognize it.
    the fact that human activity is often the catalyst for the introduction of other invasive species means that humans are the root of many invasions.

    • @TheLivetuner
      @TheLivetuner 10 лет назад +1

      Roaches followed the humans and feasts on our food wastes. As well as our heat system that provides them with habitable environment. Humans escaped the food chain and natural environment by altering environments to our liking, which if you put it into perspective, might be the biggest impact or role in earth ecology ever. Roles doesn't always have to be "natural", we are a part of nature, it's just we've grown rogue and probably needs to find a way of stabilizing it without harming ourselves, which unfortunately is yet to be found.

    • @checkeraka47
      @checkeraka47 10 лет назад

      We're all on the same roller-coaster, feeling the same natural rhythm. The sooner we simply let things be, the sooner things will begin to thrive on their own. The only thing humans should do if we want to help the ecosystem around us, is by getting out of the way. This Earth can sustain us, so long as we learn to co-exist with nature and within humanity.

Sooo a fish from Germany is not considered as invasive than a crayfish from the next watershed over. However they do outcompete native species of crayfish. They do also interbreed into some oddly fertile hybrids. My interest in these things is the reason my nickname is crayfishcraig

      No, the problems lie in the same species becoming dominant on the earth, it means that a big part of the ecosystem is susceptible to one thing - large disease/virus outbreak, even a natural predator of the creature. Diversity is good in as many ecosystems as possible because it means entire ecosystems are less prone to collapsing than if one new invasive species outperform and outcompete several niche species.
