Yup! I’ve done the money pot dive with cool looking but very old cars/trucks that can only be saved if you’re Jay Leno. Sell everything but one fav and get you a new, dependable vehicle. I hated the thought of payments - but when i finally did it - i was amazed at how de- stressed i became. I had no idea how much tension i was holding. What a relief. I paid double payments and before i knew it - i wad debt- free!

I know it’s fun to drive older vehicles, but I wrote this originally as a person who lost 15 grand on a 30 year old VW Camper I named Old Bette and was out of control about repairing. I always thought the next repair would get me that “cool dependable vehicle” I was dreaming about. I had to come to accept that, in machinery, age and dependability do not generally appear together.

You've received the initial quote of $5,000. Then you made contact to check on the status of your truck, and the price has now changed to $10,000, which was never agreed to. The mechanic never called you on status update on your truck. So when you called to check on your vehicle, the mechanic stated he would never have quoted you such a low price of $5,000. I'd call him back, and ask him for a detailed itemized bill of every part fixed, or replaced. Tell him you also want the outlining cost of labor for each fix/replacement. I'd also tell him you want to see all the old parts he replaced. I bet he back pedals.
I'm not familiar with the laws up there. When I take my truck in to get work, a verbal approval is okay as long as the dollar amount doesn't exceed $200. Any thing after this amount, requires a written approval with a signature before the work is done.
    Good luck!

  • @evelynnellis7903
    @evelynnellis7903 6 месяцев назад +85

You need to contact your local commerce office. The person who changed the cost of fixing the truck probably has done it before. They can help you determine best action as opposed to just turning over more money. It probably still won't run correctly if this business owner is not honest.

My late husband and myself heated our home with wood. Used about 6-7 cords of our of wood a year. We had a log splitter that was hooked up to an old pickup. Would take that whole set up right to location where we cut the tree down. Split and loaded the wood all at one time. Saved a lot of time and energy.

Hard luck with the dump truck. I guess the lesson you have to learn from this situation going forward is that a hand shake isn't always going to work. Always get quotes in writing, even if it's just an informal email. If you ever find yourself in small claims court, at least you have backup. Take care.

  • @triplethreat2226
    @triplethreat2226 6 месяцев назад +33

Hey Kyle! As a female and car owner, I have learned when dealing with mechanics to communicate via email. I do some verbal communication, (especially when I call for an appointment), but always follow up with a paper trail of our conversation. This includes the approximate quote for repairs, and then make it point blank I want to be informed before ANY work is done as they go. I request an itemized quote once the mechanic has diagnosed the issue, and an itemized receipt once the work is complete. From my experience, they’ll try to overcharge where they can so I typically ask my dad/spouse for their input if everything is necessary. Use your expertise to discern if a more affordable alternative can be done. I would go forth with the expenses because most things today aren’t made like they were. So if you have older quality machinery, while costly, it’s worth investing into. Shop around for a better mechanic if possible…. One you can trust and build that repertoire with. Great video! Thanks for sharing 😊

My advice would be to sell the dodge plow truck and buy a plow attachment for the tractor. You can use your F250 and a trailer to haul your fire wood. Knowing how New England states charge for car taxes and inspections you’d be money ahead if you offload the truck and just use the tractor for your plowing as I mentioned. Just something to consider. And you may have enough money to redo the roof on the a frame as well 🤔

I am so happy for you and Ally that all of your dreams are coming true. However, if I were you, I would walk away from the dump truck. The guy possibly waited so long to fix it and get with you on the final bill in order to jack up the price hoping you'd forget. Or he may be hoping you will walk away so he can keep it or has a buyer for it. Always get a quote in writing. I've had this happen once because I added on to a landscape project and didn't get an updated quote.

Kyle, This kind of negative stuff happens to a lot of us. I brought my truck in to the shop for a check engine light. Two months later they haven't touched it. I told them I want my truck now. They printed out a $700.00 bill for diagnostics performed. They still couldn't tell me definitively what was wrong with the truck. I ended up paying them the $700 and taking my truck to the dealer. The dealer checked it out and gave me a written estimate of repair. It needed over $18000.00 worth of parts and labor. More than the truck was worth. I traded it in on another used truck and purchased a five year 100,000 mile bumper to bumper policy on it with no restrictions on which repair shop I use. I haven't needed the policy so far. Getting taken advantage of is a right of passage. Hopefully, we learn from it and insist everything be written down and signed before we commit. Good luck Kyle. A man's handshake should be his bond. In your situation, Id write up a bill of sale for the blue book value less the amount the mechanic says you owe on the truck and bring it to him, along with the owners registration and tell him you'll sign the truck over to him if he agrees to your terms and signs the bill of sale.

I think this guy knows who you are, has seen your vlogs and presumes you have the money. Yes, YOU try to do the right thing, but having a final bill be double what he quoted? That's not a misunderstanding, he's trying to take advantage of you. There's NO way ANY of us would've missed/not heard$10,000! $5,000 was already a shock. I'd tell him you know he said $5000 because that was already over what you'd wanted to spend, for certain you would never have agreed to $10,000 and say" so, seems like we have a problem. I'm not spending more than $5000 (maybe offer a little over that as a gesture. maybe $5,250) and I'm sorry you don't recall this conversation. YOU have that conversation 10 times a day, every day with your customers. I had ONE that day and I remember every word. He really shouldn't get away with gouging you. I'm so sorry this happened. PS never underestimate the power of a bad yelp review or any other reviews for businesses in your area.!

He's playing you and trying to screw you on the bill. He thinks, your young, doesn't know any better and you'll pay him, then he'll laugh about over a beer with his Buddies. Tell him to keep the truck. You signed nothing saying to do all that work and spend an unlimited amount. Be tough, learn and beware in life. They're around every corner. There's more Trucks.

Sorry to hear about your truck Kyle. I have to get quotes in writing where I live. In spite of that, most mechanics here still tamper. Meineke brake pads turned into rotors, calipers, and master cylinder. They also over added fluid to my transmission trying to get me to pay for a rebuild. Meineke also put fluid around my seals but I already had bought my truck because it had zero leaks. All my mechanics that I trust have retired. I would ask for a bill in writing to justify the 10k instead of 5k. If not, I would take him to small claims court. Good luck!

Offer to pay the bill that you agreed to with maybe the rest in instalments - or take a loan). But add that because of the unmentioned extra charges you will be reporting them to the BBB and put the word out (NOT for you but to protect others from falling prey to people like that). Over 4k viewers in a 3 hr period can be very effective at getting the word out on businesses that take advantage of people…

Head gaskets for my Subaru that ballooned to nearly seven grand after the engine was out and apart, a roof that cost three times the original estimate after a third of the shingles were off, and on and on and on. I thought it was just me, that I looked like a mark or something, but after talking to some friends it seems everyone is dealing with it.

It seems to me watching your videos over the years that you have a similar problem that I have a watch collector. You do not need so many vehicles as I do not need so many watches. Lol. Can only drive one at a time, can only wear one watch at a time. Quality over quantity, no matter what you are collecting (not saying you are an auto collector, but it seems it) are some thoughts I have here. I think the new truck was a good idea. This one, discussed in this video, forget about it. Cut your losses. Here is an idea - sell all extra vehicles and cash out, save up and build your dream garage / shop and pave your driveway. I am sure you have the land and the knowledge and guys to help. Just my 2 cents and another great video as always.

Please don’t pay this guy 10k he’s almost certainly found out you have a successful RUclips channel and is trying to rip you off !! Tell him you’ll pay the 5K quoted or you’ll walk away and pay nothing !!! I bet the price drops quite quick

Well Kyle if he didn’t provide an estimate in writing and you didn’t sign anything, I would have to say, “look, this is double what we discussed, IF you had said this was the total amount in the beginning (10k) or kept me informed as it progressed AND, “I consented”, that would be a different story. But you didn’t do that mr mechanic and I never would’ve agreed to it had I been presented all the facts. so just keep the vehicle. My gift to you. The Reality is- there is no itemized invoice that was presented to you, you did not consent to 10k, so legally he cannot hold you liable. It’s just good practice to get things in writing for both you, and any type of business 🤷🏻‍♀️ don’t feel bad Kyle… it sucks that they doubled the fee without written itemization and consent but that’s not your fault. Who’s got that kind of money anyway?! I mean sheez! Also, it’s not fair for them to keep YOUR vehicle that YOU paid THEM to fix up. I mean where’s the fairness in that?! If anyone wants to weigh in on that aspect, please do… should he get the vehicle back? Only pay the 5k? Or go to small claims? I think I’d just file a small claims and at least get the vehicle back. Sorry Kyle, I know this probably not what you want to hear but it’s kind of the world we live in. I’m sorry this happened to you ❤

You could go and pay the car guy the 5,000 and tell him, Keep the vehicle. You can't afford 10,000.

Stop buying ancient machines. Something is always in the shop, broken down, needs to be fixed, etc. Whether it's a truck, snowmobile, whatever.
Rather than having 15 old and constantly broken machines, start investing in newer, higher quality gear.

I think you're getting screwed. Somebody saw an opportunity and have a win-win situation. I would make him show you receipts for everything. I would want to see the new parts on the vehicle. I would still take this to small claims court. So he said, " I would never tell you $5,000." You say,"And I would never give permission for $10,000". You could also have him return that part and he just won't get paid labor because you didn't give permission for that. He didn't get it in writing from you either.

Go back down there and stand your ground, be polite but, be resolute in the issue. Take a few different quotes of your requests to verify your stsance...good luck going forward....and this too shall pass.

I record all my conversations with anyone in the trades, I also get contracts in place before doing any work with them. Unfortunately, most of these trades guys are shady and I've dealt with a lot of them recently having built a new a frame. I've found that if I research things myself, and learn from RUclips I can do just as good as work as any of them. They all whine and complain that "nOboDY wAntS to woRk", yet here they are doing as little as work as possible and ripping really great people like you off. Sorry, rant over lol

Loved this latest video. Excellent work!
Don’t feel too bad about the truck. Money sinkholes are unavoidable with old cars, even without running in to sketchy mechanics.
I would get an itemized list of all the work, do research on the pricing, and decide whether to abandon the truck or not based on how unreasonable the pricing is. Either way I’d stop working with this mechanic. At best he’s a terrible communicator. At best.

Don't be taken advantage of, you have your good name in your corner, take him to court if need be.... Get a second opinion, you have another guy come look and check out the work and get his ideas, maybe get 3 or 4 checks just Incase a couple of them are friends... But ya that would make no sense to agree to a prove that isn't even worth the truck... Also besides getting everything in writing, make weekly or even a couple times a week calls to see how things are coming along, so they know you have forgotten about anything that's been said... What might help you, were you recording a vlogs when you called and set up the original fee?? Because the guy has to know he's pulling one over on you, because it's been months and now he needs money for his bills, probably why your work was pushed back because he is living penny to penny check, but that doesn't make screwing you over okay!!! Please stand up strong, talk to a couple other shops get their thoughts and see if they will take a look and this guy to do the work he said he would do for the price he said, if not, go to court, and a judge won't or shouldn't go with stupidity ❤

Sorry to hear about that mechanic. Sounds like the run of the mill bait and switch! Always get it in writing (or record the conversation depending on the legalities in your state)
He is ripping you off! Doesn't get the work done in the time he promised and he doubles the fee? Doesn't sound like he has ethics or a good character.... And you're worried about your reputation? This guy is a crook!

Always, always, always get everything in writing. Don't do anything on a verbal agreement! I don't care how close you are to someone get it in writing. That is why it keeps happening, because you trust people's word. This world is not trustworthy. Get it all in writing!!! Go over the contract and don't sign it until everything is worked out. Make them initial everything if there are changes in a contract. Please get things in writing...it is the only way to protect yourself.

Hi Kyle. Thank you for sharing.
I was talking to someone who said that you should always get things in writing. However, I would let the person know that you have the ability to let people on social media know who this person is who is trying to rip you off. Right or wrong that's what I would do. I get tired of being ripped off also. Good luck with that.

I will cut my losses. I have a gut feeling the truck is not gonna run well anyways that's the kind of guy he is. I would put a fiberglass plow on your new truck. This way. Your truck won't take the pounding with a light plow. They were great.

Sounds like the mechanic rips people off and is not honest. If you haven't paid anything yet I would say just leave the truck and forget about it. He probably is known to scam everyone that he does mechanic work for. He either keeps the cars people leave at his shop by over charging and people not having the money or scams by charging over what was agreed.

To bad about the truck. Most garages will just keep your vehicle until you pay. If it was me I would try to negotiate with the garage owner and offer a cash settlement if needed. Way to much time, money and frustration to try to get your money back through legal action. He has paid for the parts and labor so he wants his money. Some money is more valuable to him than the truck.
