Don't know what it is about this video, but I loved it. My wife and I could almost feel the crisp morning air watching it. Can't wait until we can afford to buy an Ercoupe.
Another great video James. I drove down to Placerville Thursday and bought a Cessna 172 with 180 hp. I flew it home yesterday. I thought about swinging by GOO, but I had a long flight ahead of me. I made a fuel stop at WMC, and man that wind was gusting. At least I have no doubt that the Cessna and I can handle it now. Again, great video James, keep them coming.
Beautiful dawn scene. Thanks for sharing the flight James - nice steep climb out to start. First time I think I've seen the approach to 7 when you returned. Oh, the joys of flight.
A very nice early morning flight James. thanks for taking us along. Trouble is at Nayland we have planning restrictions which mean we can not take off before 8.30am and 10 am on a Sunday!
@@JamesGood- 11 aircraft at the moment James and 12 pilots. (2 a/c are not used much and 1 is a true hangar queen) We are also restricted to only 10 take offs in any one day.
@@JamesGood - Thank you very much for that James. We are both doing the same sort of things with our aircraft and our channels. Shame we are separated by a rather large expanse of water!
Thank you for taking us along on a fun early morning sortie. It has been a little while since I have seen you flying and it was truly enjoyable! Take care . . .
Another awesome video and flight. What a beautiful morning. Any day to get up early and take a short flight is a great day. Thanks for sharing another flight. She is a beautiful bird! Fly safe friend!
@@JamesGood Thanks James. From the video it almost looks like the camera is on some type of gimbal, that actually moves and compensate for the vibrations but it looks like just a regular suction mount? Must be the functions of the camera itself? Sorry for being ignorant, I have no experience with Go pros. I only tried to mount cheapie sport camera inside the cockpit buy vibrations slowly moved camera down without me knowing.
In 1973 I got my pilots license out of Rolling Hills Aviation at Torrance Airport. In 1974 two friends and I planned a trip to Lake Almanor where my parents had a place to do some fishing for 4 days. Due to weather we got a late start and landed at Nevada County Airport because it was getting dark. We all had backpacking gear, so we slept under the wings of the plane and left at first light for Chester Airport.
Nice early morning Northern California flying! My dad and I used to make early morning hops out of KOAK in our Tri-Champ back in the early 70's. . We never did get to the Sierra or KGOO though, mainly up to KAPC or the Nut Tree. The cool morning air made for some nice stable flying. These are great episodes James. Love the nat sounds (TV talk for natural audio)
Thanks for the ride, James! Always a delight. Your inflight videography is tops of all. The flight and the aircraft are the center of attention. You capture the instrument panel so us old pilots can still get a rush from flying and you capture the scenery so we can see where we're going. When you skidded around the corner exiting the runway at Auburn, I snapped to attention. LOL
Very cool quick trip, James. The opening and ending reminded me a lot of the style of the "Me And My Flying Machine" channel, which is a good thing. I miss Nevada County sometimes, and your videos often remind me of that. :-)
Aren't those early morning short solo's a great way to get the day started? Makes the day so better. Do you not normally shoot your videos in 4K? Or did you get new cameras? (If you did get new cameras PM me on Facebook...I am looking for a couple good used ones)
Hi James, is pitot heat part of the pre-flight checklist? Didn't hear it. Saw a video recently where someone lost airspeed in IMC because they forgot about pitot heat. Cheers, enjoyed the video.
Thanks for asking. No, no pitot heat on the Coupe, so nothing to check there. It's about as basic as they come. Not many Ercoupe's are (legally) flying in IMC!
I did my check ride in N9860G 14:45. I need to go up with Mike for some mountain training. I'd love to be a passenger in your sweet Ercoupe. I'm based down at Sac Executive now.
I see you have a go pro camera on the tail of your airplane. Just curious to know when cameras are placed on the plane do you need to get FAA approval first or can you just place them on without approval?
I use a suction cup mount. Which is a temporary addition (literally comes off in 2 seconds, but stayed on my whole trip from CA to WI), so results in no airframe modification. With that being the case, I believe the FAA is not interested in my camera. At least, not with the current regs. If I had to mount a case to the airframe with rivets or screws, that would not be the case, and paperwork would be required. Good question!
The reason we got the fiat? It was a 4 year old lease return that we got for $6K. 30K miles. Had low expectations, but it’s been a great car! Handles the around town stuff (most of our journeys with ease) fully electric, charged from our solar panels. Fun to drive too!
Hi Lawson. The camera is a GoPro Hero 7, I have some details on my website at www.jamesgood.com if you're interested. It's a suction mount that I use. Doesn't noticeably impact handling.
how much did the annual cost when you put in a lot of the work (taking all the panels off, etc.)? approx $ would be ok if it's not something too personal.
If we find nothing broken, you can get out for less than $1000. Maybe $800. But typically something requires some work. When I had to change a cylinder and rebuild the mags last annual, I think it was around $4000. That’s unusual, but definitely happens, especially when you first take ownership.
I would plan for $2000 a year in maint, with a sorted aircraft that you know. If it’s new to you, chances are that will be higher for a few years, while you sort the deferred maintenance the prior owner probably did.
I used to keep carb-heat on after I got into the pattern. Talking to a few of the older guys at the airport, they suggested just confirming no ice, and removing the heat to ensure max power available if you need it. Seemed to make sense, so that's what I do now. I probably wouldn't do this in a more humid area. What do you think of it?
@@JamesGood that makes sense. Cessna instructors and even my Luscombe instructor always had it stay on until you touchdown and commit to the takeoff or exit the runway. I always get scolded when I forget about it and wonder "why is climb performance so poor?"
Hey Scott. Not really. It's a nice reliable backup to my 'continuously updating' ForeFlight. It's definitely secondary, but a very good one. I do have my eye on an AV30c for the panel though, maybe replace the (also old but reliable) artificial horizon.
Been a while since I’ve seen one of your sky adventures and they’ve only gotten better! Bravo, James. I must say, there is a bit of an American accent slipping through, me thinks. 😲
James: I’m considering finishing my private pilot license, and wish to do so due to a bad experience with a ‘heavily used’ Cessna 172 when I experienced full electrical power, and while we landed safely via the the onboard lasers to communicate with the only person in the control tower (in VERY active San Diego airspace), after delving into the maintenance logs, I found the beat-up 172 was owned by a mechanic who did his own work on the 172, and incorrectly ‘fixed’ the exact same power-failure scenario a week earlier ... and ‘forgot’ to do all the pertinent paperwork. This time, I want my own airplane, which ‘I’ will maintain WELL - Aeronautical Engineer - and have always wanted an Ercoupe. How could we communicate via email? Is there a RUclips private option where we could share emails? I’d really appreciate discussing your ongoing adventures. Also, I really enjoy your videos. Regards, Max (British ex.Pat also), residing in WA State
I saw that you mentioned Sutter Butte the shortest mountain range in the world north of Sacramento, did you know that in 1865 or so some Calvary officer decided to make a preemptive strike and wiped out the Indian population living on the west side of the Butte and then later the east side of the Butte, I sure am glad times have changed, don't forget I still want to talk to you about how to do RUclips, Cyrus
It was an early morning yesterday and I was up before the dawn. I got in my silver air coupe and I must be moving on. Love your vids James. You would know that song. 🦘
James, I enjoy following along your flights, and especially the basic flying in an Ercoupe is a pleasure to look at. I never would have thought you would brake that hard in Aubern, nor would I consider the Ercoupe's tires screaming on the tarmac. But you demonstrated good airmenship by saving the pilot waiting at holding position 07 additional waiting time. All the best from Germany!
Thanks Ulrich. I was taken by surprise with that braking action, I certainly won't be doing that all the time. Nice to know they're available if I need them though. Nice to know 805 is (virtually) traveling to Germany. :)

That was a nice ride. I have never noticed this before on tricycle gear but does the yoke control the nose wheel? Thanks
Thanks, Jerry. On most tricycle gear aircraft, no. But on most Ercoupe's, it does. Some of the later versions went back to conventional controls.
