It wasn't his strongest magic, he only learned a water saint spell, but he also has an emperor level fire magic against orsted, and king level earth magic against badigadi. The standards in that world are if you can use this spell you are acknowledged as that tier.

It's actually not just sylphie aswell, Ariel hired two advanced ranked water magicians to activate the spell and sylphie boosted it cause rudeus was about to dispell it lmao, and the spell drained both the water magicians and sylphie while Rudy just well normal for him.

Someone else in the comments explained it, but essentially he found his most optimal use for efficiently taking out monsters, which is Stone cannon + Quagmire. I can imagine that its like choosing to throw a waterball at someone that will still do good damage, compared to firing a quick bullet XD.
Try playing the Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen, it has no water magic but ice magics. The magic gameplay in there is so good and satisfying. Also there will be an upcoming 2nd Dragons Dogma soonest.

Or just been a weirdo like me and able to think of crazy ideas that have the lore or science to back em up His move on the hydra was good but it caused the creature to thrash around. I would have never used such explosive measures with the rest of the group so close and would have informed them of a safe word if I intended upon using it. He essentially used a combo of chemical explosions with mineral rock shards. While efficient he didn't consider two things. In this world using magic he can just produce the pure element instead of the mixed and impure stuff we find and have to refine in labs. Second. Compounded on it probably being pure he did not consider the concentrated amount he had produced nor how catastrophic that explosion would be. In turn he used something he probably thought up on the spot and never tested in extreme combat while in close quarters with his party. Rudeus may be strong but he is very inefficient and doesn't grasp just how much more powerful he us than the average person.
Interesting fact about folding.... Take a sheet of paper and fold it once. You have a 2x thickness. Fold it a second time and you have a 4x thickness. Fold it a third time and you have an 8x thickness. Fold it a fourth time and you have a 16x thickness. Fold it a fifth time and you have a 32z thickness. Fold it to seven times and you physically can't. But if you are a fucking idiot and have a five fold water magic staff, then you can cast water magic 5x times more effectively than without the staff. Not 32x more effectively, just five times. Wow, Engo Jungu dai ju bo?
You can fold a piece of paper more than 7 times You just need a really big piece of paper to start with so you still have room to fold when you get to the 7th fold

Quagmire is earth and water combined magic, plus it says in the LN/WN that it doesn't just increase power, but can be used to reduce the mana cost as well, so technically he's using it right. Also according to the LN, another character states that normally the quagmire spell is only supposed to be the size of a plate, but his quagmires cover massive areas, so it makes sense that the spell would end up becoming his nickname.
