Thank you for another fun reaction, man! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D You hit the nails all pretty much on the head! The Children of Atom believe in 'Division', which is the idea that when an atom splits, new universes are formed. So they view atomic blasts as literal acts of creation and to die in a nuclear explosion and have your atoms 'divided' is the highest honour. Every atom in each of us contains a whole new universe each itself filled with infinite atoms. And I absolutely did use this as an analogue for modern political and religious movements sewing societal division to recruit people to their extremise ideas, science denialism and selective facts. 'Their society decided we were better off divided - and delightedly I'm inclined to agree' - Those before the bombs thought we were better off fighting each other. They had the right idea. We SHOULD be divided but we should *also* be **Divided**. Notice how both their holy book at the start AND the book the preacher mocks later on are academic textbooks? But they only like one and decry the other. They choose the facts that serve their narrative. In this case, they prefer the children's textbook over the one with thorough research. The facts they like work for them at surface level but don't you dare read any deeper and learn the truth. The CoA show up in different sects throughout the games, each with their own spin on their beliefs and their own rules and to an extent mythology. (Some hate ghouls, others worship them, for example.) So it was fun to have the freedom to pick and choose and create our own little sect that served the story I wanted to tell, without having to worry about messing with the established canon of any particular group. This one is DENSE so I won't go over every little thing but I will touch on some things you talked about that I can give you some context for! Hate to school you on your US history here! But Fat Man and Little Boy were the names of the bombs the US dropped on Japan, so the line was in reference to those! Though you're right, the nuke launcher in the game is also named 'The Fat Man' in reference to those bombs. (The ammo are just called 'mini-nukes'.) The 'fattest man to little boy' section is in reference to their belief that division seeds new universes. To use the phrase 'mortal shells' to refer to people is an expression about our fragility, we are but delicate, breakable things that will wither and die containing something more precious and beautiful within, the soul. So the whole thing is a double on being a 'mortal shell', a frail being, withering and dying but with the eternal soul within and also a literal 'mortal shell', each of us a living bomb (shell) containing infinite universes just waiting to explode from us. 'In every atom's light - convection - a warmth of welcome spreads to all' - Convection is the way by which atoms exchange heat energy, so that 'warmth of welcome spreading to all' is a double! A really fun but impossibly nerdy and niche one you missed is 'Einstein on the Beach' is actually an opera about Einstein discovering the theory behind the atom bomb. It was written by Phillip Glass. ('time to Phil your Glass'). I really just included this one for me and MatPat who introduced me to the musical haha. Only one person has ever clocked it so far! @@TheStupendium wow, thanks for the insight and for checking out the reaction! I appreciate your behind the scenes details and moments I missed (and of course your support)! Thanks again for another fun song to react to!
Also i heard, faint emaciation versus living a half life. As saying your life isnt complete without atom, thus living a half life. And youd rather just have some faint emaciation. (Partially because the preacher is 200 years old)
A funny thing that doesn't immediately click about Stupes's character being a Ghoul is that... *Ghouls are immune to Radiation*. They're not only a pre-war Ghoul who's been around more than long enough to have actually known the truth behind the atomic bombs, but they're also preaching about the holiness of something that is specifically *not harmful to them, but harmful to those they're preaching to*.
'Living a half life' is also a double; when measuring radiation, the 'half-life' of a radioactive substance is how long it takes for roughly half of its atoms to have decayed. And while the 'winter' note is almost certainly a reference to their next song too, it's a reference to 'nuclear winter' as well.
He also had it flipped, the Preacher isn't suggesting the rads will give you a half a life, he's saying you're only living half a life without the rads. He is, after all, over 200 years old. So, what's a little emaciation as a side effect?
In the finale, "May we save the nation from those not like us" and "Let us make America detonate again" - those hit way too close to home in our current Presidential election cycle. Fabulous work as well, singing believably in an accent not their own.
35:00 The line "from Eden's aftermath" is probably referring to 'John Henry Eden' who is the AI leader of the Enclave whose personality is an amalgamation of former US presidents.
Also, because they mix with some Christian imagery, it could be a jumbled pre war mix up with Atom/Adam and Eve in Eden (which they got kicked out of resulting in our current world).
@@mrshadow4007 The actual eden reference you both missed was the Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.). It's a Vault-tec item that's allowed near miraculous terraforming in Fallout.
@@bobobo7730 Possible but unlikely. Absolutely right! An earlier idea of the video was to give the character a pip-boy and have them bring it up to change their outfit, have the charisma boost come from clothing items, but it was too clunky to make work. The chems were a much easier narrative device to boost the character's charisma but we still wanted a clear visual progression too, so we opted to keep the costume changes. Just imagine they are pausing the game and swapping out their clothes in the inventory at the same time as taking the chems. :P
The reason it "sounds like a full, legit, pit band orchestra" is because it is, the winds, drums, guitar, bass, hammond organ, and backing vocals are all real
The line about Eden's aftermath is referencing the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, or G.E.C.K., which was supposed to be put in every Vault, but Vault Tec did what it does best, lying, manipulating, and so on, so a significantly lower number of Vaults ever got their G.E.C.K. A G.E.C.K. has enough supplies to refertilize tainted soil, remove radiation from a water source, start farming plots, and generally return the land around a Vault to a state similar to before the bombs fell within a few years. Obviously, the Children of Atom are very much opposed to the idea of cleaning the land of radiation.

I think the reason they're changing outfits is to be extra charismatic! In Fallout, there are certain outfits that make you more charismatic. For example, in New Vegas I'll get the most dapper clothes on before I try to convince someone of something
Popping the first Voca-Stim is in my opinion the best acting I’ve ever seen from Stupes. The subtle trembling of the hand, the hesitation and worried glances are just perfect. There are so many lines which tickle the brain the right way. The “Atom’s eve sure was a blast” word play also on Adam and Eve, the beginning of human kind, Einstein on the beach (a wonderful photo, btw, with the most exquisite sandals), and the Oppenheimer line, to name a few. This song highlights not just the rift between religious extremist and science, but also between science and conspiracy groups, certain politicians, TikTok weirdos and others who take advantage of vulnerable people. (I thought I was writing a novel but Stupes beat me to it 😂)
to correct some of your science, it's not the atoms directly that collide with each other, it's neutrons that collide with a radioactive atom, splitting it and releasing more neutrons that strike other radioactive atoms, etc so a division (of an atom) sows divisions (of other atoms in a chain reaction)
"On theorems so farcical that cast our martyred particles apart from Atom's throne!" This one could also be referencing that the scholarly articles and theorems they're writing on are also made of atoms(which would themselves be seen as the particles being martyred), taken away from the congregation's religious beliefs, away from the throne.
Its a amazing song. The part were his makeup gradually drops off and hes getting more gaunt as it goes on is cool. Hes a ghoul and a shyster. A prewar Ghoul maybe. He knows its all bullcrap. He just wants the caps.
The wordplay in this song is some of Stupes' best, but I want to take a second to appreciate the background track as well. The composer and performers did such a great job and it's so catchy!
I rhink the end is about how there is Nuclear Winter after a nuclear attack. The thing in Fallout: New Vegas, were some NCR Troopers say Patrolling rhe Mojave makes you wish for a Nuclear Winter. The debris blocks the sky and causes a artificial winter. With green, irradiated, snow. In the games case.
Fatman and Little Boy were the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. The shells part is they are bombs and they have shells. The gun is called a Fatman. They fire Mini Nukes. Little Boy is the name of a special kind of Mini Nuke. I think. There is a Little Boy in the games.
i think the line faint emaciation versus living a half-life is more referencing the half-life of radioactive elements such as uranium then the fact it cuts life expectancy
This also all works because in Fallout sorry have to quote a wiki. "Some Children exhibit congenital immunity to radiation, but the faith accepts all converts as long as their faith is true. Many live freely in high-radiation zones like the Crater of the Atom without suffering from radiation sickness, ghoulification, or other physiological changes." Its an fun concept of a song, and i can see how with a sliver tung and the human need for hope you could fall for it. Also the Stupendium had those outfits on hotkey for speech checks.
36:55 There isn't actually a weapon called the Little Boy in the series. The Fat Man is the launcher that fires mininukes, and they're just called mininukes. This was a reference to the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II, nicknamed Fat Man and Little Boy.
Musically, it was reminiscent of gospel and also kind of Will Wood. Thematically, I loved how it played with the Atomites. They’re sorta based on real ideas about an “atomic priesthood” that might be able to retain and transmit information about nuclear physics and safety. Only Stupendium could make it all so catchy!
A couple other you missed the water drinker was conner quest and in there somewhere was star girl as well as a couple others I couldn't remember the name of.
I don't know if you pointed this out, but I love the subtle reference to "Not Like Us" by Kendrick Lamar in the last part This is one of Stupes' best, was vibing every second of it lol

Something that no one seemed to noticed yet in the reaction community The book that the participants of the atomic mass read In the intro of the song is the well established warning about nuclear waste, devised solely for the purpose of protecting those who come after fall of our civilisation. Yes smart scientists already prepared that too. "Nothing important was buried here, no estimated nobility nor treasure. We were scared of what lies here" ^ losely paraphrasing.
Einstein wasn't dead for thousands of years. He died in 1955, the bombs fell in 2077, and the games are set from 2102-2104 (Fallout 76) through 2161 (Fallout 1), 2241 (Fallout 2), 2277 (Fallout 3), 2281 (Fallout: New Vegas), 2287 (Fallout 4), and finally 2296-2297 (the TV show).

The "New and clear and NU-CLEAR just like our family" -> Nuclear family line is so banging it's insane
Also, Fat Man and Little Boy in games are named after the two infamous nuclear bombs that where dropped on Japan in 1945
The windmill on top of the church is in the shape of the nuclear logo, but it’s turned sideways so it’s kinda hard to tell
@@A_Random_Theatre_Kid oh nice! I didn't even catch that!
Might be a weather vane, though (but I agree, probably designed to be ☢️-like)
@@tschillintsoulntai9285 WEATHER VANE! *THAT'S* what I was trying to say!
@@Insaneian yeah, that's what I figured but as no one else has offered it in other comments yet, thought I'd put it out there. Though I don't think any other reaction yet had made any comment on the weather vane so you're still ahead on that analysis point
That is an awesome Stupendium shirt I wish I could have it. Also Wario approved reaction!
I love when you wear the stupendium shirt to watch stupe's videos
Eden might also be referring to the "president" of the Enclave John Henry Eden in fallout 3
"Their hearts and minds are lead." The mind part at least is a heck of a way to call someone dense.
I think the reason they're changing outfits is to be extra charismatic! In Fallout, there are certain outfits that make you more charismatic. For example, in New Vegas I'll get the most dapper clothes on before I try to convince someone of something
37:16
Fat Man and Little Boy were also the names of the atom bombs that were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima respectively as well, I think.
@@bzrklarz4295 yup! Stupes pointed that out in the pinned comment!
(I thought I was writing a novel but Stupes beat me to it 😂)
Only trust the science you yourself perform.
"Each division sows division" is also a way of saying that a chain reaction is under way.
to correct some of your science, it's not the atoms directly that collide with each other, it's neutrons that collide with a radioactive atom, splitting it and releasing more neutrons that strike other radioactive atoms, etc so a division (of an atom) sows divisions (of other atoms in a chain reaction)
@@gibbbon AH! Thank you...I was close, but I appreciate the clarification!
"On theorems so farcical that cast our martyred particles apart from Atom's throne!"
This one could also be referencing that the scholarly articles and theorems they're writing on are also made of atoms(which would themselves be seen as the particles being martyred), taken away from the congregation's religious beliefs, away from the throne.
Its a amazing song.
The part were his makeup gradually drops off and hes getting more gaunt as it goes on is cool.
Hes a ghoul and a shyster.
A prewar Ghoul maybe. He knows its all bullcrap.
He just wants the caps.
*Their* not *His*. Stupes goes by They/Them pronouns, just fyi.
@@Insaneian The character I mean. Not Stupendium themself.
2:51, It begins! I've been checking for your review of this masterpiece since The Stupendium released this!
It's both. That's the point. :P
@@TheStupendium I see, i should've thought of that >.
This also all works because in Fallout sorry have to quote a wiki.
"Some Children exhibit congenital immunity to radiation, but the faith accepts all converts as long as their faith is true. Many live freely in high-radiation zones like the Crater of the Atom without suffering from radiation sickness, ghoulification, or other physiological changes."
Its an fun concept of a song, and i can see how with a sliver tung and the human need for hope you could fall for it.
Also the Stupendium had those outfits on hotkey for speech checks.
FINALLY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Was waiting for this. Great work, no notes.
Love your reaction as always Ian
36:55 There isn't actually a weapon called the Little Boy in the series. The Fat Man is the launcher that fires mininukes, and they're just called mininukes. This was a reference to the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II, nicknamed Fat Man and Little Boy.
Me patiently waiting for The Ark And The Tinderbox reaction
Already done! Since it's not a comedy song tho, it's exclusively on my Patreon.
@@Insaneian darn
32:09 fallout 76 actually has a mutated 2 headed cow, but that one's a grown adult, not a calf
As always, love the video. Keep it up Ian!
I didn't notice the universal warning message the first time I watched this at the beginning
The Eden thing is related to John Henry Eden. The AI President of The Enclave.
I don't know if you pointed this out, but I love the subtle reference to "Not Like Us" by Kendrick Lamar in the last part
This is one of Stupes' best, was vibing every second of it lol
Omg when u got the call my sister phone started ringing and a soon as u said suspected spam is calling my her phone stoped 😮😂😂
When you said you reacted to *every one of their songs* on your Patreon I was about to head over there and subscribe... but then you said except Shine Through... My favorite one 😭
@@Sinnoh1996 yeah, alas I haven't reacted to that one...but it's one of my favorites too. I've even considered covering it...
T'is a shame you hadn't started non-comedy patreon-exclusive reactions in time to do Shine Through. Do you think there's enough to do a treatment as you did with Weird Al's assorted music videos?
@@tschillintsoulntai9285 maybe? I don't want to revisit them since I've seen them all so recently, but I might do Shine Through at some point.
This reminds me, I might've forgotten to do last month's exclusive reaction 😅
Something that no one seemed to noticed yet in the reaction community
The book that the participants of the atomic mass read In the intro of the song is the well established warning about nuclear waste, devised solely for the purpose of protecting those who come after fall of our civilisation. Yes smart scientists already prepared that too.
"Nothing important was buried here, no estimated nobility nor treasure. We were scared of what lies here"
^ losely paraphrasing.

Genesis and Eden likely reference GECKS
Genesis EDEN creation kits
The terraforming gear some vaults have
Pretty sure Eden refers to John Henry Eden, the AI leader of the Enclave and the de-facto US president in FO3, the Genesis was a nice word-play as it's the book in the Bible where the Garden of Eden is mentioned and also refers to the start of something, which is the start of the children of Atom after the Bombs fell. Also, G.E.C.K stands for Garden of Eden Creation Kit btw.
Stupes has been known to write lines that have 3 or more meanings to any given word
Side note: That guy that monty python-ed himself is DAGames, another Musician and Gameplayer on youtube with over 2 million subscribers. Him doing that is pretty accurate to him irl too.
It was entirely his idea. He had to leave early unexpectedly and we had to work out a way to write him out of the video. He suggested 'What if I just get so excited I knock myself out and get carried away?' and it was so funny we rolled with it. One of my favourite moments in the video!
I should have recognized him as my pal Luke has done some animation for him...but I've never actually known what he looked like 😅
@@TheStupendium Sounds in line with him. I do love it when you've got guest stars on, no matter how small their role. It's always fun.
