I don't have experience with gender dysphoria, but body dysphoria, yes, and here's how I would describe it. A couple years ago, I took the plunge and cut my over a meter long hair into a pixie cut. It was a great style, I looked cute, everyone loved it... but I no longer knew who the person in the mirror was. When I wasn't looking in the mirror, I felt no different, I was just 100% me, but as soon as I caught a glimpse of the mirror... To say it was jarring, or a shock every single time is really an understatement. It was like there was a stranger standing where I was supposed to be standing. It had a significant affect on my life. I started avoiding mirrors (which is harder than you think), feeling stressed out all the time, feeling super self conscious about my looks, and starting avoiding specific clothing and such that seemed to make it worse. For example, I missed hoodies so much because they're so comfy, but I hated that it seemed to strip me of my femininity completely, and I couldn't wear them at all for months. I gave it a valid try, endured the torture for nearly a year, trying to like the new haircut (because I'd heard that it's normal to hate it at first and love it later), but it just WASN'T ME, and nothing I could do (different styles, different variations, different clothes) made any difference. Since then, I've grown my hair back to my chin, and the profound relief that ensued as soon as it got long enough to see myself again in the mirror was immeasurable and indescribable. I'm much, much happier now, and my reflection is once again my own.
