- Multiple camera views of the first V-2 launch from a ship (USS Midway) on September 6, 1947. An edit of the best side-by-side views is shown first, shown along with historical narration and recreated ambient sound. Then other angles and longer uncut sequences are presented.
AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample the film to full HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.
Sound and image cleanup, conversion to original 24 fps frame rate, geometry correction and AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.
========================================
Operation Sandy was the codename for the post-World War II launch of a captured V-2 rocket from the deck of the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Midway on September 6, 1947.
It marked the first launch of a large rocket, and the only time for a V-2, from a ship at sea.

Pretty amazing footage, never knew this test was so well-documented
I used to make powdered match-head Biro rockets as a kid.
They always did that too.
Wonderful restoration and preservation of classic post-WW2 rocket tests. Those sailors had cojones of steel being that close to a launch of not well tested and perfected V-2 (likely captured, not assembled from parts) vehicle. Obviously, it's creator, Von Braun, was not present. He may not have advised a sea launch of that technology from the deck of a ship. Launch tubes, with folding guide vanes, were the standard that came out of this test. Naval warfare would never be the same after this.
amazing footage
Great find Retro!
liquid fueling at sea - gutsy & crazy - we (and the Ruskies) did some very high risk, cutting edge stuff in the early Cold War years - fear, the great motivator, drove constant technological breakthroughs in weapons, aviation and submarines ... think about how bare bones that test was - great footage
"Well. That's not gone well."
My old girlfriend, Sandy, went off course too!
Before the invention of safety. Like it.
I wonder if there's any documentation about the damage to the flight deck
Anyone who witnessed it directly is fortunate to have lived through it. This was the infancy of modern rocketry with liquid propellants. There was no scientific base to draw from. These guys were true hard-asses. Real Hero-level shite.
I wonder what the deck material was to withstand the rocket exhaust
Armored deck Midway 4 this squirrely little fartabout
