I miss the random deep dive episodes. I take everything said about short videos back. never realized how much a part of my day your videos have become.
@@Fishtory yes this video came right on time 🙏. I recently started a small online Aquascape side hustle. Hopefully it can be full-time soon. I don't think there could be a better proof of concept on inoculation than your 20 day absence and how well your fish did. You're such a science nerd Alex, and I'm so here for it!! And so glad to see you made it back from the south happy and looking really healthy!! 😊✌️
I've got 1 tank that has not had any maintenance for over a month, and all is well. It's a 14G Rimless Cube. The setup is a little compost in the very bottom, covered with almost 2 inches of river muck from down at the river, then capped with about an inch of plain sand from Lowes, larger grain. Then I added a few various plants, both planted and floating. A single LED light on top. For stocking, I have some red cherry shrimp, wild cherry shrimp, and Snowball Neocaridina Shrimp. I also have 40 Thai Micro Crabs. And added some scuds as well. All appears to be in perfect harmony now, no out of control algae, and the only glass I clean is the front pane for my viewing. None of the other glass sides are cleaned. And have a heater in the back, which never comes on because it's pretty warm in the room. And a bubbler in the back for some water movement. And that's it, all is looking great. Here's a stream that I let it run for 10 hours or so. I'm located in Wenatchee, so not too far from ya. ruclips.net/video/Lf0rsAV-Q-4/видео.html
I lost power for 5 days so had no heat, filters or anything and all 5 tanks did great just being heavily planted and going down to 66 degrees. Just living in still water. I was so worried but they all did so well and didn't appear stressed or anything. I've only been doing this for little over year but watch you, Cory and father fish vids religiously
I found a hack for having someone feed while your gone. Make pre made food bags using small baggies. For instance the ones you might find at a smoke shop used for other little things. Have them come over every 2 days to feed one bag a day found next to each tank with the baggie labeled by tank letter, and day of the month. Then a note with the exact instructions taped onto the biggest tank. This is the only thing I have found that has been 99.9% successful. I'm giving that 0.1% to human error on my part for good measure. With that many tanks, and plants, forget tank filters. Just use 3 air pumps linked, and then if you want a sponge filter inside. You always need aeration. Power goes out, the battery backup typically has no problem keeping movement in the chance of a power outage, and if one doesn't kick on, or kick off(lol) the 2 will work enough till you get back. Keep one battery backuped. Discus, similar method incorporated using a simple automatic feeder (that doesn't spin when the batteries get low.😂.Legit happens. Lol. Then finally instead of pre packing baggies, you pre pack automatic fish feeder containers integrated into it. Hope this gives someone ideas and saves fishy lives. 😊
This is a great idea! If you go away regularly or you want something reusable, you can buy those little pill organizers that have each day labelled, more than one if you're going away for over a week, and you can dose out your feeding per day in each compartment.
I also appreciate how you share the good, the bad, the confusing. It makes it so approachable and empowers people to get to problem solving as a fun part of the hobby, not a discouraging one

You have a right to be concerned. That's a lot of weight and potential damage. I'd go with a 29 gallon, maybe 2. Set them at least 20 feet apart from each other.
Metric system is trash. The idea that it is scientifically superior, while pervasive, is a myth based on finger counting. Take the temperature for example, from 0 to 100, and we have our normal daily human experience, so what does that have to do with freezing or boiling water? How about we use a range where 0 is a really cold day and 100 is really hot. And the 12 base is way better for doing thirds and quarters, and every unit is just more relatable in the empirical system.
Off topic but do you have a Facebook page and if so can I get a link I'm wondering if you would mind if I contacted you directly through Facebook Messenger I have some questions and I would like to share some pictures of my fish tank with you I have five in total I have been running filterless tanks and no water change tanks on and off over 25 years

I try to buy one aquarium of 150 gallons, but the weight scare me 😟 …. Other way is put this aquarium in the basement but my basement don’t have heater system , I live in New Jersey, is very freezing 🥶 here in the winter ❄️ , I don’t know, I can buy heater for the aquarium but maybe the plants can’t survive …. Am scare put this aquarium in my first floor 🥲
You have a right to be concerned. That's a lot of weight and potential damage.
I'd go with a 29 gallon, maybe 2. Set them at least 20 feet apart from each other.

That 'sound' when all your filters/lights turn off at the same time is soooo dreadful
Fish urine counts as fish doing a water change. 🐟🚽
Aren’t you kinda sad about losing fish :(
Yes i lost a betta and 3 elasomma fry. Which out of a few hundred fish is not too bad given the situation though.
Can I message you in private? Is there a way, i have some doubts regarding my planted aquarium
