  • In this video, we'll modify this little Fanon Masco microphone we found inside an old reel to reel tape recorder recently. The recorder was modified into a guitar amp. That video can be seen here: • Converting a JUNK Tape...

    you're totally swiping some if my trade secrets! lol... I have the best mic preamp made by Bogen (my favorite amp maker, pre 1964) with a B+ voltage of 550v!!! and juices two 12a_7 tubes so hot, and clean... I use the pair of them on everything... it makes my mixes glow, the drums pop, the guitar in focus, with perfect mids and hi's... ridiculous head room... and no one knows about them! I put my pair out on the web a year ago... no one knew a thing. But I've had preamps of all colors... you can experiment with the two tubes and get all you need... from high sound pressure to miking a fly washing his hands... lol. serious.

    Love the ornamental altec desktop compressor add-on....really adds some characture to the whole presentation lol..
    while I was watching this, I was thinking the same thing about what plugging that into the compressor/preamp device would yield...actually, what the hell am I doing up so damn early...now I'm thinking what my silver eagle crystal mic would sound like thru the altec!?!...btw, I was watching your tiny Vox amp repair and how much trouble you were encountering in placing the package to hold in place get it to solder successfully and I remembered my teachings at the first shop I worked at after graduating from college (Bozotronics) and a trick we always used in amps like Jordans/Wilder etc craps(all solid-state)to hold them in place....a small toothpick drop of superglue...worked with mixing consoles like 2inc. etc, as well and to this day, the secret to release even the tiniest of sg adhesive is placing a toothpick droplet on a scalpel(or in todays world, snap knife) with tricloriphine brake cleaner(non-flammable)...when you want to sell your little microphone, let me know, I'd be interested in buying it lol. seriously.
    jeez, I need to go to bed....

    I wondered all the time if you had grounded the shielding. Won't have much of an effect without that.
    The aluminum cap over the voice coil you removed probably helped with shielding too. But in the end it turned out quite good.

    That little thing actually sounds pretty cool. Question: I remember you doing a video about the ART tube preamps- well I got one of the little ones, the tube MP it's called. I've had it for about 10 or 12 years. When I try to use it with my medium diaphragm mic these days it makes a lot of noise. So it's kind of useless for vocals now. So, I was thinking of turning it into an overdrive/distortion pedal. Any suggestions for resources that'll give me a good start on figuring out how to do that?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 года назад +1

      I think those are all surface mounted circuitry, IIRC. You'd probably have to just gut it and start over with a schematic you find online. Just guessing.

    • @JeremyL_Hay
      @JeremyL_Hay 2 года назад

      @@TheGuitologist I just now took it apart to check. I'm looking at it right now, and it's definitely a through-hole board. It's got a 20 db gain button and pre and post pots. So i reckon I could just run it in front of an amp with the +20 db and a the pre cranked. But that creates a pretty harsh transient sound. The tube apparently doesn't do much, like I think I remember you surmising in that video you did on the one you had ahold of. Hmm... I don't know. I might just use it like it is.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 года назад +1

      @@JeremyL_Hay This one is going to be a starved plate design just like the other one I showed. That video is in my "Microphones" playlist on my channel. To really be an effective tube preamp, you'll probably want an actual power transformer capable of providing at least 80 or 90 plate volts.

    • @JeremyL_Hay
      @JeremyL_Hay 2 года назад

      @@TheGuitologist Oh ok. That makes sense. Thanks. I might just take it all apart and see if I can make something interesting with the parts. I just know I don't like throwing stuff like that away. Alright well. Ya take it easy.
