Wow that 21 minutes flew by! So I'm not a scientist, nor do I play one on TV. But I'm pretty sure tsunamis aren't an issue of the water not fitting back into the ocean. Just that it's a huge wave that crashes onto the land. To use your metaphor of the cup and the plate, when water pours out of the cup, the plate gets wet. You could put the water back into the cup, but the plate will still have gotten wet. Imagine the plate was a coastal city, and instead of a few drops of water, it was an entire gallon of water. Yes, the water would still technically be able to fit back into the jug, but the damage would have already been done. Everything would still be all wet.
