Good morning from Southern Illinois! Rick, with your ability, I do believe that you could probably achieve the same “snary” effect playing on a piece of wet cardboard. I just wanted to say that your videos and all of the related work involved in producing them, are well appreciated. Thank you!
FANTASTIC !!! Thanks so much for making this video, Rick !!! I requested a video on this topic a couple weeks back on one of your other videos. Really appreciated 🤩 Great Info, as always !!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge & expertise.
Great playing and perfect technique as always Rick! Love your videos! One thing I can't quite make out is if you are applying pressure with your middle finger underneath the stick or if it is not doing anything to achieve the buzz and it is purely index finger and thumb?
Hi On the buzz strokes I apply slight pressure with my other fingers but most of it is coming from slightly squeezing the thumb and first finger. This changes somewhat depending on the dynamic I am playing.
@@rickdior Thank you for the reply Rick..I will need to practice that. I've been curling the tip of my index finger under the stick to get more leverage without having to squeeze too hard on a buzz roll but that way i find I just can't articulate changes from that grip back to fingers very quickly. You appear to maintain a similar hand and finger position for all techniques..
Hi Rick, thanks for the brilliant content as always, appreciate it. I have a question regarding trad grip. Do/have you ever experienced forearm ache when playing trad grip? I've dabbled with trad for many years, however I sometimes get a dull ache in the forearm, which is frustrating. I never get this with matched. I always aim for relaxation & regard my technique good. Just wonder if it's me or a common thing with trad. I've had rotary cuff issue with left shoulder in the past, wondering if linked. Any advice appreciated, thanks. Gary.
Hi Gary I have never had any issues like you are describing but I have had some students who come to me with these issues. It is usually because they are using too much arm and forearm in their stokes. Their are is absorbing the stroke and that causes muscle and tendon strain. I would have to see you play to offer my opinion on what may be causing it. You can communicate with me at rickdior@gmail.com Thanks
Yes, that matters since with a lighter stick you will have to work much harder. A heavier stick will work on its own to some degree by just dropping it. Gravity is your friend.
Hi Rick, thank you for sharing, great as always 🤩. I have a question for you, when playing drum set I’m trying to insert buzz rolls within time playing in different styles, some tempos work out ok, but I often find myself coming out on the wrong hand (or starting on the wrong hand), or roll ends up not being a metric roll, so I end up compensating at the end of the roll, especially triple time, 3/4 time, can also happen within other time signatures. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this?
Hi Andre' Thats more of a lesson question so you may want to take one. If you use the rhythms on pages 7-9 of my drum set book as buzzes within 16ths and triplets that will go a long way in fixing these issues. You should also be using od groupings like groups of 5 and 7 which will bring you out on the opposite hand and solve that issue.
Yes Rick, i should, I have just been really busy playing and booking enough gigs for my trio after Covid, but I will contact you as soon as I get the little extra to spend. I really admire your playing, work ethic , knowledge, very inspiring and makes me work as hard as I possibly can. I love to practice, searching, discovering and finding new ways of doing things. In the meantime thank you so much for the tips you gave me here. I got your book 🙏🥁🤩

Many thanks for taking the time to respond, Rick. I'll be in touch.
Does the size of sticks make it easier, I find it hard to buzz with light stacks such as Shelly manne sticks
