Just so everyone knows, you can do this on Android natively without any extra apps. Long press on the app, and tap the pencel edit icon and you can rename and change the icon. It will keep notifications showing too. Super pleasant feature of Android.
Nova Launcher: Long press the app icon, tap edit, tap the icon, pick an image, done. Long pressing the app icon works in both the home screen and app drawer.
If you do it on the home screen only that icon will be changed while if you do it in the app drawer the base icon will be changed which means that if you drag out another discord icon on the homescreen it will have the new icon.
I got Nova because my new phone doesn't let me put apps into folders, a basic-ass feature taken away for no reason. (Or a basic-ass feature that Samsung added that OnePlus didn't?) Zero regrets, love it. Was mildly annoying to have to pay for Premium to get that feature, but it's a one-time thing instead of a subscription, so I mind a lot less. Heck, I still use Swype, so I definitely got my dollar's worth out of that. Don't care that it's been discontinued, I never used the cloud features anyway.

although i disagree with it being behind a nitro paywall, i think its actually pretty neat. it saves me the time from making the icons myself and they have a decent range of them so its just some nice extra customization features
The "paywall" isn't rly blocking much except unnecessary decoration features, it's mostly a way of supporting discord for their service, and even then they give you codes for games or other services from time to time

As a mobile user, we could literally download a third party app, and just get add an icon without nitro, and most of mobile users use third party launchers like "nova launcher, so we would make a custom home screen either way.
I like changing icons on desktop all the time, so i know why this feature is not on desktops 😅 And true, people want to complain "oh theyre making this just to get money" when it adds features to a existing subscription program that doesnt change it's price, and most of the features not being free most often dont even matter to people after their initial outrage.

I love the fact that I can make a screenshot of the icon and then make a custom shortcut that opens discord and save it to the Home Screen with that exact discord icon

If you own a Samsung phone, you can use wonderland and its assortments of features to reskin your app icons to just about anything so long as you have png/jpeg ready to use to replace the original icon.
To be fair, adding a menu that changes the app icon *Shouldn’t* slow mobile discord down, but that doesn’t mean they can’t find a way to slow it down somehow anyway

I think the icons look nice, but Discord keeps trying to sell Nitro with basic features like swapping an image. Most of the time people could just modify the software, but in this case it should really be handled by the OS.
I just want to point out that Windows Desktop (or rather Taskbar) Icon will revert back to the original if you're using "Don't group icons together" feature in Windows 10 and older, or any 3rd party program that simulates the same feature on Windows 11 (such as Start11 StartAllBack). This only occurs when the application is on, so if it's minimized (to the tray icons area) or closed, the icon you picked will be shown.
Warning: If you change the app icon on desktop, then move the ICO file, _the icon will break._ In fact, changing the name of any folder in the file path to the .ICO file will break the custom icon. I'd recommend just putting the file in your root directory or somewhere else where you'll never move it.
i'd recommend not putting it in the root folder, easiest way to get the worst organization possible, either just shove it in a folder somewhere under your user (i do like C:\Users\\Documents\Assets\, or maybe that but without the documents), or just replcace where the icon is in discord's install (probably not great if you use an auto-updater)

That photopea thing is so incredibly overkill to round the corners of an image lol. There are free websites that round the corners for you (they say they don’t store your image but I wouldn’t upload anything personal)

For something that's trustworthy and way simpler than photopea, I've used the image rounder on pinetools before. It looks like it actually does everything locally, which is pretty cool. Great tutorial! I used to do this for everything on my taskbar the same way. also these work with pretty much EVERY app on windows.

That goes for ANY file which is called upon by a program. They don't automatically update the file path to look for the file.

I don't have Discord, but this update seems genuinely kind of cool. Though, I feel like they shouldn't make EVERY customization option cost money.
Not everything is paid. But that's the only way to make Nitro worth it. People used to complain how nitro is a scam because it didn't offer much. Now that discord is adding them, people are complaining about it too.

Good thing that IOS has shortcuts that you can change the icon and name of and make it open the desired app
I made my own logo with photoshop, its colored blurry glass with cool highlights and some shadows for 3d effect. It looks awsome. Thanks for the tutorial on how to change the little icon at the taskbar. I didnt know that was possible.

how to make a custom app icon:
replace discord's .ico file with another one

with the desktop icon, it also applies to any program (unless it won't let you, like microsoft office 2003).
I also once changed the icon on my desktop to the old one, as I have an old setup executable for the discord client.
