Try to do some preventative physiotherapy. Check to see if it's covered under health insurance. You want a physiotherapist who will give you a set of exercises to do at home in the morning, not one who will make you come in every two weeks like clockwork and milk you for money all the time.
Just got recommended this video by the algorithm (so, pleased to meet you) but I wanted to say that this video has a very nostalgic, public-access show vibe that is somewhat rare on RUclips. As a farmer, mechanic, and full time father I can say suspenders are a life saver. I always have tools in my pockets, and tools on my belt. I am a suspenders and belt guy. Make fun of me, I don't care. The belt holds my tools, it is not tight. The suspenders hold up my pants, the belt, and the tools. I started wearing suspenders over 10years ago, because my Grandpa told me if I can't keep my pants up he would staple them to my hips.
Ha! Sounds just like my Grandpa! I remember when I got out of the army and showed up to his shop with a tattoo. He offered to remove it for me. With a belt sander!
I wear the Perry suspenders, because like you I have tools that hang on belt, so the Perry’s just hook right up to the loose belt, that and I’ve had little success with the bachelor buttons staying in denim, they rip out, yep let them laugh, I laugh at the ones who’s pants are below their butts

As a cabinet maker I have started using a set that attaches via carabiner to the belt loops. For me, they have worked extremally well. It is actually amazing how much time you lose and how much aggravation you save by not having to pull up your pants every hour.
Well I am a food courier...So I run up and down stairs a lot. I got sick of holding my pants up, so I got suspenders instead. My delivery speed improved a lot.
I'm 26, you convinced me 4 years ago to switch to suspenders. I've been wearing a pair of Carhartt double front jeans with the batchelor buttons EVERY WORK DAY since. Life changing!!
Consider stuffing knee pads into the hole in the bottom of the double fronts. Nothing better than the suspenders with knee pads built into your pants. You can tackle any job. Not sure why Scott doesn’t use them
Try some Wrangler Riggs. Menards is the best price. I get the cargos to get my wallet out of my back pocket. Double fronts also. Awesome in the winter outside.
Work pants with another skin of cloth over the front of the leg. I like them . The thorns and sharp stuff doesn't get to the skin. Cut a slit and stuff in thin kneepads. Sew it up again or velcro. @@denisthomas4232 You can also just do it yourself. Sewing on a button ain't exactly rocket science. I dunno what it is about sewing that makes otherwise practical, handy dudes lose their minds. It's a set of specialized tools and skills for doing a trade, just like carpentry.
There are suspenders with carabiner style hooks to clip into belt loops on your trousers. They dont slip off and you dont have to modify your trousers.
@@MAGAMAN They do. I use only cheap trousers and have no problems. I had more problems with the button style suspenders before because I used press in buttons that had a tendency to rip out after a while.
This man speaks the absolute truth. I worked construction for 14 years. I came to the same conclusion. I had to start wearing suspenders because of nerve damage like he mentioned. I now wear suspenders on my pants all the time. no more construction, but just for comfort. (58 years old now) But I wear a belt and suspenders because I wear a concealed firearm everyday. The firearm goes on the belt, the suspenders hold up the whole thing, (pants. belt firearm)
I’m 23 and a carpenter of course, I wore a belt until I was 18, and the reason I switched to dungaree suspenders was because of a video you made years ago “suspenders go on your pants not your pouches” and it stuck with me, 5 years later and my hips feel fantastic, I put buttons on all of my work jeans myself, best thing I’ve ever done. And the ladies love snapping my straps 😎
But you wear toolbags as a carpenter? Hard to imagine the toolbag belt over suspender bachelor buttons is a nice feeling. He never really addressed this in the video did he?
@@jakeowens1770 i put my buttons on midway spaced between the height of the belt loops, and I wear my tool pouches right under them, I don’t feel them because I don’t put my belt over them.
@@Treppiede I use a leather hole punch or a scratch awl and press them together with a set of Vice grips 😂, I get my buttons from carhartt, a place near me sells them for a $1 a pack so I stock up. And the spacing is all personal preference.
I stumbled across essential craftsmen when I took a job claiming to be a carpenter, then I quickly needed to RUclips what the hell I was trying to do. 8 years later I can say I'm a so called "professional". I have been a police officer (sergeant) for over 28 years now. I can tell you firsthand that a heavy equipment belt will give you hip and lower back problems like you wouldn't believe. At 52, I am tore up in my hips and lower back. We recently went to an external vest system. I wear suspenders under the vest and keep most of my "needs" on the vest.......LIFE CHANGING!!!!!! It's to late for me, but hopefully our younger officers don't have to suffer anymore.
Choosing the lightest weight options for everything in your loadout can help too ... if you can afford them. It pays to stay as current as possible with your gear.
In my area a lot of cops have suspenders attached to their duty belts. I know the Nylon belts seem to be gaining popularity too, I imagine the heavy leather just has less give.
@@RovingPunster I've never really been bothered by weight. As long as I'm not feeling too tired by the end of the day, it just seems like a mild form of extra exercise. I tended to carry a ton of stuff in my pockets while growing up, so that might be why I'm used to it.
More of a hobbyist woodworker/DIY, but I inherited my dad’s tool bags and it came with suspenders. At first I took them off then put them back on. The difference is dramatic especially when you have so much extra weight in tools on your belt. I greatly appreciated it when I installed my fence and replaced the knob and tube in my attic (with guidance of a contractor).
Scott: My first encounter with suspenders was as a young soldier in the Army. Our load carrying gear required suspenders and it's amazing how much weight they can carry without feeling heavy. As I've become more chronologically advanced, I've noted my "full point of contact" (backside) has begun to disapear...dad never warned me about that! I don't carry a load at work like a carpenter, but for day to day wear they're definately in the wardrobe!
The similarities between you and my dad (35 years on the railroad as a master electrician) are unreal. I vividly remember him putting his own bachelor buttons on his Carhartts when he had the same epiphany.
Also, "overalls" can be a great option. They come in better looking materials than just denim, and have tons of pockets for smaller tools, and deep hip pockets for larger tools. If you don't know, "overalls" are a suspender/shirt/pants combo. Although most wear a light t-shirt underneath.

Love the profound wisdom!!! So, for the past 26 years as a police officer, 19 of which have been in plain clothes, I have worn a handgun on my right hip. That joker weighs 5 lbs loaded! That's equal to suspending a 5 lb bag of potatoes from one hip, and nothing on the opposite hip to counter balance the weight. Now, at 57 years old. I feel it in my right hip. Suspenders would have taken the weight off my waist and put it on my shoulders and back, and distributed the weight much more evenly. So, an additional category is the police officer, whether male or female, whose agency requires plain clothes officers to wear a hip holster rather than the shoulder holster. Electrician here. Recently made the switch to bibs for work to get rid of the belt. I do not wear a dedicated tool belt, rather I use a Carhartt nail apron and a pocket caddy for tools and materials. With the bibs and i can put all my tools in my pocket and have no pressure on my hips and back. Let alone not having to pull my pants up several times a day. I will say I feel much more mobile with bibs.
Carpenter Robin Clevit (a great RUclips channel) has been advocating 'Diamond Back' tool belts for a while now. These are a suspenders type of rig and take all the weight off of the hips and give great access to tools.
I know for a fact that Canadian formal military uniforms use the bachelor buttons for suspenders, and I can legitimately say that's the only thing I miss about wearing that stifling uniform on a regular basis, rather than the occasional opportunity I have now. Suspenders are definitely the better call. And even my 68 year old Dad finally made the shift about 3 years ago. When pressed, he said that I'd eventually come around. And I definitely have... Switched to clip ons 5 yrs ago. Got bachelor buttons after watching this last year. I wear my fathers braided leather suspenders with my suits ,reminds me of the biggest influence of my life!
You’re the reason I started framing houses, and because of that I of course started out with suspenders just the same way as you. I do love them and I got crap for it at first but those guys know its the way to go… they just think its too late to switch now.
I love suspenders! Though I do not like tucking in my shirt...My solution, before I moved to FL, was that I only wore them in winter over a tank top (a wife-beater if you will), but under my untucked t-shirt/shirt/flannel
All excellent points, ... NOW taken to the next level, let me advocate for bib overalls. Cool and well ventilated when it's hot, ... snug and warm when it's not, ... handy pockets on the front. Railroad workers, Farmers and Painters can't ALL be wrong.
especially when its cold i like my bib overalls; put sweatpants on underneath them and when you go home, just drop your overall, ditch it in the back of the truck and get behind the wheel in your comfy sweatpants
Suspenders are the bomb! I love them for everyday use, sometimes belts have to be readjusted through the day, and makes wearing pants in hot weather very annoying. Suspenders on the other hand, keep me agile, and comfortable, I can run, and jump, and squat and everything is good.

Shoulder supported pants are life changing! Ive integrated suspenders and overalls into my life over the last 5 years, and it has been amazing. I use leather suspenders that clip into my belt loops now, they are convenient, durable, and can attach to any of my work pants with no modifications. I still wear a belt, but shoulder supported pants is my preferred mmethod. Great video!

Brady’s problem with numbness of his leg is known as Meralgia Paresthetica (sounds terrible) and is caused by pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and occurs for the reasons his doctor gave. Almost always reversible if the cause of the pressure on the nerve is eliminated. Suspenders and loose fitting pants is a great practice for most persons in the trades, especially if they wear a tool belt. Good video Scott.

Had the same nerve issue start during a deployment. Ortho doc diagnosed meralgia parenthetical and had me start wearing suspenders even while in uniform. Made a big difference. Thanks Scott!
Just over 30 yrs as a chippie in New Zealand and two years ago changed to the yank set up of suspenders on the apron (Milwaukee suspenders to hook on existing apron), complete game changer! I am a retired career carpenter/construction superintendent that switched to suspenders at approximately the same time as you did. I did it because I would get nasty looking red welts on my hips. Now, 20 years later, my right thigh always feels semi-numb, or tingles. I never put two and two together, but maybe that tingling is due to the pinched nerve that your camera assistant learned of. Thanks for the video, I could really relate to it.
I think you just fixed my problem. I have been getting a red welt over my hip and it comes and goes, and I was thinking it was something related to my Eczema, but I just realized that it is probably from my belt. I don't wear a belt daily because I work a desk job at home during the week, so I wear stretchy pants because they are comfortable and I don't need to look good. On the weekends or vacations I always wear a belt, which is probably why this problem comes and goes like it does. The sweatier and more active I am on the weekends, the worse it seems to get.
There's a lot of videos on yt for releasing different kinds of hip problems yourself, if your can't find an osteopath/physiotherapist to help. Hopefully you'll find one that can help with your hip.
About 6 months before I turned 50 years old I was diagnosed with kidney failure... I opted for peritoneal dialysis and fought my pants and belt situation for months and ended up with sore hips and back. I had on my winter bibs and they were very comfortable so I bought bib overalls and have now I complete bib overall wardrobe and very rarely wear pants... Yes I have to use bigger pants and bigger bib overalls thanks to the peritoneal dialysis that's in my abdomen constantly. I do have suspenders for my tuxedo pants and they are still very comfortable.
After watching this being a handyman and doing so many different scope of work, I am now going to give suspenders a try. I never thought that may help with the pain and keeping my pants in place when I'm wearing my toolbelts and shirt tucked in. You may have convinced me again to try something new. I've been a plumber in the garden state of New Jersey for 44 years now. Added suspenders to my "uniform" many years ago for the very reason you mentioned in your opening remarks. I wore a belt and suspenders for years in order to carry a small flashlight, leathermen, keys, etc. but discovered the rolling about or repositioning myself on the floor when necessary could pinch those items in a most uncomfortable manner. I've long since ditched the belt and now utilize a small canvas bag which enables me to carry a few extra everyday tools as well. I'm a suspenders and belt kind of guy. I've heard the "why are you holding your pants up twice" before. But I also carry felcos in a leather sheath and a hori-hori, both a belt and suspenders are essential for me
I have worn suspenders, but here in the Southeast, it's hard to overstate the value of leaving shirts untucked. 95 is the temp and humidity. The less I'm wearing outside (within reason) the better. Of course I'm not working in construction anymore, but my suspenders really only get worn in long sleeve weather.
I have debated on getting overalls for working in the shop. Never considered suspenders, especially for everyday life, since I am not a shirt tucker, but overalls for working in the shop could be the ticket to saving some shirts.
I have to wear both because I carry a heavy fixed blade knife, leatherman, and a phone holster on my belt every day. Yes all three are essential, I use them all multiple times throughout the day and its the best solution for me. Besides it makes me drop dead gorgeous too!!!
Me too I’m a construction super and walk the job none stop. And have always A phone clip (company), tape measure, my clip knife, a personal phone and packet full of keys. No wonder my pants where always pulling down
I’m 42 and I switched to suspenders about 2 years ago but missed my multi tool that I always kept over my back pocket. I just settled on elastic “stretchy” belt and elastic suspenders that hook directly to the belt. I’m not winning any fashion awards but I’m not rushing to take off my tools every chance I get like some guys.
Hey, Ive been wearing braces attached to my leather 1½" wide belt this 8+ years. Of a tradesman in carpentry being 37, I do get some looks here in Northern Ireland Co. Armagh. Great to see some of the older generation wearing them. Its been proven and tested over the years...
Sometimes showing common sense solutions to others makes you seem like a brilliant man. Wearing suspenders as a young man shows you have the wisdom of an older experienced man.
Tool belt destroyed my back and hips a long time ago. Started strapping suspenders to it about a decade ago to put the weight on my shoulders instead. Huge difference. Less pain, and the tool belt isn't constantly trying to take my pants off.
Either way, you're gonna take some damage. Guys who start out wearing suspenders on their tool belts end up with horrible shoulder pain, compressed vertebrae, and even a hunchback. Those guys end up going the opposite way from you and start wearing a belt only. And hopefully they retire before they ruin their hips. The only way to avoid damaging one part of your body or another is to take the belt off whenever possible and wear it only when you have to. I know, I'm in the trades, depending on the task or your boss that's not always possible. But that toxic "can do" attitude about wearing a tool belt 100% of the time on the job is gonna have to change if we are gonna get honest about the hazards of wearing a tool belt, suspenders or no, and the damage it causes to your body.
In the Army, I added suspenders. When you have so much in your BDU (pants), belts are not good enough. It *CHANGED* everything. As I was looking at my LBE (Load Bearing Equipment), I realized it had a suspender for a reason. I still had to wear a belt (regs are regs) but in the field, having suspenders was a game changer. As an Infantry guy, we were down range quite a bit.
I wore braces (the "gentleman's" word for suspenders) regularly with my required suits in the corporate world for 25 years. Then everything went "business casual", and the belt came back for the remaining 15. That said, I totally get your point about comfort if you want to take weight off your hips when carrying tools.
I switched to suspenders on my nail bags about 25 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I have recently switched to suspenders for every day use on my pants and also the best thing I’ve ever done.
I don't know what is with construction people. So much wisdom! You gentleman have the capability to take a big problem and simplify to the extent that it becomes a pill that you swallow and the problem is solved.
I recently made the switch to braces (UK term for US suspenders) mainly because I was spending too much time pulling up my trousers (UK term for US pants). Mostly I have been using clip type, which has led me to an interesting line of research regarding whereabouts the clips should fix to the waistband: I noticed that old military uniforms tended to put the front attachments near to each other, that is not far out from the fly, whereas pre-buttoned trousers had the fixings almost above the hip, particularly the outer button of the two. The only fashion reference I could find on the subject was that “the line of the braces should be directly above the front crease of the trouser leg”. The upshot of this for me is that the braces feel better when the clips are closer together and the 2 straps are roughly parallel, but when the clips are further apart the upper part of the braces (outside of the nipples) gets pushed out by the chest, so makes you look more muscular but can lead to them slipping off the shoulder. So I agree with the high Y and would add clips close together. great vlog btw.
Wearing a duty belt as a police officer for 25 years, I can attest to the nerve damage that belts do. For many years after retirement the skin on just the surface of my thighs was numb. I now have my own handyman business and my bags have suspenders. Even when I’m not wearing bags, I wear suspenders. Belts have always been frustrating for me because I am gluteusly challenged but became more so when I started my business. Nothing brings the frustration like pulling up pants all day.

I'm 66 with 52 years as a professional Carpenter/ site supervisor. Buy the time I was 26 my Dr asked about the stretch marks on my hips, it was my tool belt. Over the years I moved from a fully loaded framers belt, to a Canvis tie on belt to no belt as a supervisor. Now I'm going back to working with a belt again and the suspenders are on my Christmas list.
Just made the switch and they are by far more comfortable. I do tree work and can’t wait to see how much better I feel at the end of the week, I also noticed that my right leg stopped falling asleep since making the switch. THANK YOU!
I had posture issues and tend to slouch. Ever since making the switch to suspenders 5 years ago, it has helped me tremendously with correcting my posture. That belt-suspenders advice your dad gave you was invaluable. I do see some older men commiting that faux pas and it certainly was jarring.
When I was 18 I was a very very fit male. Started out doing drywall and after a year I was having chronic nerve pain in my hips and lower back. The guys I worked with wore suspenders and didn't need their belts so tight. I got on board and now at age 37 and a full time carpenter. I have no body issues at all. Best decision I ever made
I've been wearing suspenders for about 35 years. Downside to button attachment - they're hard on wood furniture. I rivet a piece of leather to the leather button hole pieces that covers the button when attached.

After watching this video I bought two pairs of suspenders and two pairs of key pants. Also added buttons to about 75% of my jeans. I have no more hip pain or back pain from a belt working as an electrician. Got a few weird looks from guys and the other men in my family but now multiple others have started wearing them and swear by them like I do. Greatly increased my comfort. This is also the video that led me to this channel and I haven't stopped watching yet!
I'm a plumber and I have and recommend the clip on Makita suspenders, they're so good. It's not only better on the hips but the guts aren't too constricted at work!
I've been wearing suspenders for years, I love the feel of the soft silk against my skin underneath my rugged manly work clothes on site, it makes me feel so special. I've also been wearing BRACES for a few years now and I agree they are a game changer, my tool belt no longer pulls my trousers down.
Well done! I laughed at one point because the whole "belt & braces" idiom from the UK. A 20-year Army vet, not only did I appreciate the extra padded suspenders for the load bearing equipment, but some of us also discovered that the weird stretchy suspenders that came with 1980's era rain suit worked amazing and could hook through your belt loops. My old, faded suspenders are about to get replaced this week. I'm in Tennessee so besides fading, there's the whole sweat thing; having a pair that don't smell like neglected gym equipment has become important me in my small shop. 😉
32 and I've never liked wearing belts... I got a pair of overalls for work and the feeling was amazing. I don't know why I never thought about suspenders... Definitely going to get a pair!

A belt and braces (suspenders) man, always has several layers of security! Us english used it for bankers, when they wanted several layers of collateral for a bank loan, hence a "belt and braces loan" by a "belt and braces guy"!! Haven't tried braces since I left the forces, but I'm now seeing a damn good reason for them. Helps stitching your own buttons too!! Great video, keep it up!! 👍👍
I started wearing suspenders and pleated trousers one day and it changed my life. My hot flashes essentially went away, I feel much cooler and honestly it just looks better too. Its kinda sad that you have to deal with people saying something about them almost on daily basis especially since Im only 30 so people think Im making some sort hippie statement. I just say “Im tired of wearing rags” and usually people move on. Also if you cant find suspenders locally, try Dillards! They have that roundtree and york brand with belts and also suspenders nearby too, they come with the clip AND buttons you can sew on for the proper way.
I started with suspenders about a month ago. I was tired of the pressure around my waist from leather belts. It shapes your waist awkwardly and reduces your range on your hip range of motion. I realized over the past few years that old boys chose suspenders, overalls, and coveralls for performance. I’ve started with clip ons, but plan to have bachelor buttons installed in my work britches. I recommend them.
I bought some Outdoor Research suspenders to go with my winter hiking pants this year, gonna see how that works. They are a Y-shape set with velcro and will only really work with Outdoor Research pants that have loops sewn in. I think the most important thing in this video for me was learning the term "bachelor buttons". I had no idea what they were called, and it makes searching for jeans or pants with them difficult. I'm a guy with a lot of loose skin from weight loss, suspenders help so much with keeping me from muffin topping when I'm wearing tucked shirts. I do prefer the style of belts but looking 5lbs slimmer in the waist is arguably better, imo.
Only reason I haven't switched to suspenders yet is because I like my buckles. I live in the midwest and like dressing the cowboy way with the dinner plate belt buckle. However, from a practical working-man sense, suspenders are the way to go. I plan to get some studded buttons to attach to my wranglers and just wear suspenders. I like the 'logger' look with the pin-stripe grey shirts too.

I didn't have problems holding my pants up with a belt when i was younger. But now I'm an old guy who has lost the bigger butt of younger years. I often have heavy stuff in my pockets and have had to drill more holes in the belt to make it tighter. And it's awkward to tighten your belt in public when your pants are falling down. I've been thinking of trying suspenders...and now I'm gonna. Thanks..

I agree with suspenders on my work pants. Was tired of my shirt always lifting in back as I was hunched over all day. Since I added suspenders, a whole new ball game. Way more comfortable. However, as I do not wear a carpenters belt 99% of the time, I still wear the belt in addition to the suspenders. I just keep the belt loose and pants a bit big on me. That way the pant waist “floats” as I move and my shirt stays tucked. I still wear the belt cuz something’s gotta hold my Leatherman & K-Bar. 😂 Don’t work without them. Im 23. I was a part time welder on the farm since i was 15. When i turned 18 i got full time since i graduated high school. I used to wear overalls all the time, didnt have a problem. They were my pants and the didnt fall off of me. Since i was maybe 18 i switched to just bluejeans and a belt. Ive never had a need for suspenders myself. My dad wears them everyday. But i believe what you said about key. They were the only overalls i would wear. Very good brand. Key overalls and a carhartt coat. Now its wranglers and ariat
You inspired me to make the switch. I used to buy pants with a string because belts made me uncomfortable. That sort of worked even though it wasn't really comfortable. I think I will keep using suspenders. Right now I'm experimenting with where to place the buttons to make it the most comfortable. Most of us wear pants everyday to work. It doesn't make sense to be uncomfortable everyday because of something so basic.
Good morning suspenders for 35 years my crew used to tell me that you could tell how close it was to quitting time by how big the crack in my butt was. I sew buttons on the inside of my Wranglers and buy suspenders at the Suspenders Store. Great channel thanks

Try to do some preventative physiotherapy. Check to see if it's covered under health insurance. You want a physiotherapist who will give you a set of exercises to do at home in the morning, not one who will make you come in every two weeks like clockwork and milk you for money all the time.

As a farmer, mechanic, and full time father I can say suspenders are a life saver. I always have tools in my pockets, and tools on my belt. I am a suspenders and belt guy. Make fun of me, I don't care. The belt holds my tools, it is not tight. The suspenders hold up my pants, the belt, and the tools. I started wearing suspenders over 10years ago, because my Grandpa told me if I can't keep my pants up he would staple them to my hips.
Ha! Sounds just like my Grandpa! I remember when I got out of the army and showed up to his shop with a tattoo. He offered to remove it for me. With a belt sander!
I wear the Perry suspenders, because like you I have tools that hang on belt, so the Perry’s just hook right up to the loose belt, that and I’ve had little success with the bachelor buttons staying in denim, they rip out, yep let them laugh, I laugh at the ones who’s pants are below their butts

As a cabinet maker I have started using a set that attaches via carabiner to the belt loops. For me, they have worked extremally well. It is actually amazing how much time you lose and how much aggravation you save by not having to pull up your pants every hour.
I'm a cabinet maker as well, I love my Dickies apron when I'm slamming boxes together or installing guides.

Consider stuffing knee pads into the hole in the bottom of the double fronts. Nothing better than the suspenders with knee pads built into your pants. You can tackle any job. Not sure why Scott doesn’t use them

Work pants with another skin of cloth over the front of the leg. I like them . The thorns and sharp stuff doesn't get to the skin. Cut a slit and stuff in thin kneepads. Sew it up again or velcro. There are suspenders with carabiner style hooks to clip into belt loops on your trousers. They dont slip off and you dont have to modify your trousers.

As poorly as clothing is made today, I wouldn't expect the belt loops to hold up very long on most pants.

This man speaks the absolute truth. I worked construction for 14 years. I came to the same conclusion. I had to start wearing suspenders because of nerve damage like he mentioned. I now wear suspenders on my pants all the time. no more construction, but just for comfort. (58 years old now) But I wear a belt and suspenders because I wear a concealed firearm everyday. The firearm goes on the belt, the suspenders hold up the whole thing, (pants. belt firearm)
I’m 23 and a carpenter of course, I wore a belt until I was 18, and the reason I switched to dungaree suspenders was because of a video you made years ago “suspenders go on your pants not your pouches” and it stuck with me, 5 years later and my hips feel fantastic, I put buttons on all of my work jeans myself, best thing I’ve ever done. And the ladies love snapping my straps 😎

@@jakeowens1770 i put my buttons on midway spaced between the height of the belt loops, and I wear my tool pouches right under them, I don’t feel them because I don’t put my belt over them.
@@Treppiede I use a leather hole punch or a scratch awl and press them together with a set of Vice grips 😂, I get my buttons from carhartt, a place near me sells them for a $1 a pack so I stock up. And the spacing is all personal preference.

I have been a police officer (sergeant) for over 28 years now. I can tell you firsthand that a heavy equipment belt will give you hip and lower back problems like you wouldn't believe. At 52, I am tore up in my hips and lower back. We recently went to an external vest system. I wear suspenders under the vest and keep most of my "needs" on the vest.......LIFE CHANGING!!!!!! It's to late for me, but hopefully our younger officers don't have to suffer anymore.

In my area a lot of cops have suspenders attached to their duty belts. I know the Nylon belts seem to be gaining popularity too, I imagine the heavy leather just has less give.
@@RovingPunster I've never really been bothered by weight. As long as I'm not feeling too tired by the end of the day, it just seems like a mild form of extra exercise. I tended to carry a ton of stuff in my pockets while growing up, so that might be why I'm used to it.
More of a hobbyist woodworker/DIY, but I inherited my dad’s tool bags and it came with suspenders. At first I took them off then put them back on. The difference is dramatic especially when you have so much extra weight in tools on your belt. I greatly appreciated it when I installed my fence and replaced the knob and tube in my attic (with guidance of a contractor).
I appreciate your learning curve leading you to a better choice. Given the same circumstances, many men can't seem to get there.....
Scott: My first encounter with suspenders was as a young soldier in the Army. Our load carrying gear required suspenders and it's amazing how much weight they can carry without feeling heavy. As I've become more chronologically advanced, I've noted my "full point of contact" (backside) has begun to disapear...dad never warned me about that! I don't carry a load at work like a carpenter, but for day to day wear they're definately in the wardrobe!
The similarities between you and my dad (35 years on the railroad as a master electrician) are unreal. I vividly remember him putting his own bachelor buttons on his Carhartts when he had the same epiphany.
Also, "overalls" can be a great option. They come in better looking materials than just denim, and have tons of pockets for smaller tools, and deep hip pockets for larger tools.
If you don't know, "overalls" are a suspender/shirt/pants combo. Although most wear a light t-shirt underneath.

Love the profound wisdom!!! So, for the past 26 years as a police officer, 19 of which have been in plain clothes, I have worn a handgun on my right hip. That joker weighs 5 lbs loaded! That's equal to suspending a 5 lb bag of potatoes from one hip, and nothing on the opposite hip to counter balance the weight. Now, at 57 years old. I feel it in my right hip. Suspenders would have taken the weight off my waist and put it on my shoulders and back, and distributed the weight much more evenly. So, an additional category is the police officer, whether male or female, whose agency requires plain clothes officers to wear a hip holster rather than the shoulder holster. Electrician here. Recently made the switch to bibs for work to get rid of the belt. I do not wear a dedicated tool belt, rather I use a Carhartt nail apron and a pocket caddy for tools and materials. With the bibs and i can put all my tools in my pocket and have no pressure on my hips and back. Let alone not having to pull my pants up several times a day. I will say I feel much more mobile with bibs.

Carpenter Robin Clevit (a great RUclips channel) has been advocating 'Diamond Back' tool belts for a while now. These are a suspenders type of rig and take all the weight off of the hips and give great access to tools.

I know for a fact that Canadian formal military uniforms use the bachelor buttons for suspenders, and I can legitimately say that's the only thing I miss about wearing that stifling uniform on a regular basis, rather than the occasional opportunity I have now. Suspenders are definitely the better call. And even my 68 year old Dad finally made the shift about 3 years ago. When pressed, he said that I'd eventually come around. And I definitely have... Suspenders on your tool belt is the way to go, no pain and you're not always pulling you belt up all the time and they are very comfortable.

You’re the reason I started framing houses, and because of that I of course started out with suspenders just the same way as you. I do love them and I got crap for it at first but those guys know its the way to go… they just think its too late to switch now.
I love suspenders! Though I do not like tucking in my shirt...My solution, before I moved to FL, was that I only wore them in winter over a tank top (a wife-beater if you will), but under my untucked t-shirt/shirt/flannel
All excellent points, ... NOW taken to the next level, let me advocate for bib overalls. Cool and well ventilated when it's hot, ... snug and warm when it's not, ... handy pockets on the front. Railroad workers, Farmers and Painters can't ALL be wrong.
Don't forget they collect all the crap that falls down from anything you are working on overhead.
especially when its cold i like my bib overalls; put sweatpants on underneath them and when you go home, just drop your overall, ditch it in the back of the truck and get behind the wheel in your comfy sweatpants
Suspenders are the bomb! I love them for everyday use, sometimes belts have to be readjusted through the day, and makes wearing pants in hot weather very annoying. Suspenders on the other hand, keep me agile, and comfortable, I can run, and jump, and squat and everything is good.

Shoulder supported pants are life changing! Ive integrated suspenders and overalls into my life over the last 5 years, and it has been amazing. I use leather suspenders that clip into my belt loops now, they are convenient, durable, and can attach to any of my work pants with no modifications. I still wear a belt, but shoulder supported pants is my preferred mmethod. Great video!
In Germany still a lot of handymen use Latzhosen, which are basically pants with suspenders and an apron included. It's just practical.
In the US we call them Overalls. Not too common on the job in my experience but they are a good idea.

Brady’s problem with numbness of his leg is known as Meralgia Paresthetica (sounds terrible) and is caused by pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and occurs for the reasons his doctor gave. Almost always reversible if the cause of the pressure on the nerve is eliminated. Suspenders and loose fitting pants is a great practice for most persons in the trades, especially if they wear a tool belt. Good video Scott.

Had the same nerve issue start during a deployment. Ortho doc diagnosed meralgia parenthetical and had me start wearing suspenders even while in uniform. Made a big difference. Thanks Scott!
Just over 30 yrs as a chippie in New Zealand and two years ago changed to the yank set up of suspenders on the apron (Milwaukee suspenders to hook on existing apron), complete game changer! I am a retired career carpenter/construction superintendent that switched to suspenders at approximately the same time as you did. I did it because I would get nasty looking red welts on my hips. Now, 20 years later, my right thigh always feels semi-numb, or tingles. I never put two and two together, but maybe that tingling is due to the pinched nerve that your camera assistant learned of. Thanks for the video, I could really relate to it.
I think you just fixed my problem. I have been getting a red welt over my hip and it comes and goes, and I was thinking it was something related to my Eczema, but I just realized that it is probably from my belt. I don't wear a belt daily because I work a desk job at home during the week, so I wear stretchy pants because they are comfortable and I don't need to look good. On the weekends or vacations I always wear a belt, which is probably why this problem comes and goes like it does. The sweatier and more active I am on the weekends, the worse it seems to get.

About 6 months before I turned 50 years old I was diagnosed with kidney failure... I opted for peritoneal dialysis and fought my pants and belt situation for months and ended up with sore hips and back. I had on my winter bibs and they were very comfortable so I bought bib overalls and have now I complete bib overall wardrobe and very rarely wear pants... Yes I have to use bigger pants and bigger bib overalls thanks to the peritoneal dialysis that's in my abdomen constantly. I do have suspenders for my tuxedo pants and they are still very comfortable.
After watching this being a handyman and doing so many different scope of work, I am now going to give suspenders a try. I never thought that may help with the pain and keeping my pants in place when I'm wearing my toolbelts and shirt tucked in. You may have convinced me again to try something new. I've been a plumber in the garden state of New Jersey for 44 years now. Added suspenders to my "uniform" many years ago for the very reason you mentioned in your opening remarks. I wore a belt and suspenders for years in order to carry a small flashlight, leathermen, keys, etc. but discovered the rolling about or repositioning myself on the floor when necessary could pinch those items in a most uncomfortable manner. I've long since ditched the belt and now utilize a small canvas bag which enables me to carry a few extra everyday tools as well. Been a loyal follower of the channel and an even more enthusiastic listener to the practical wisdom you so readily share. Keep up the good work!

I'm a suspenders and belt kind of guy. I've heard the "why are you holding your pants up twice" before. But I also carry felcos in a leather sheath and a hori-hori, both a belt and suspenders are essential for me
I have worn suspenders, but here in the Southeast, it's hard to overstate the value of leaving shirts untucked. 95 is the temp and humidity. The less I'm wearing outside (within reason) the better. Of course I'm not working in construction anymore, but my suspenders really only get worn in long sleeve weather.
I wonder if over time there’ll be a slow evolution from suspenders to overalls.

I have debated on getting overalls for working in the shop. Never considered suspenders, especially for everyday life, since I am not a shirt tucker, but overalls for working in the shop could be the ticket to saving some shirts.
Maybe it's just lack of practice but when you have an emergency #2 I'm way more confident with suspenders than overalls. 😂
I love my overalls, but I have yet to find a good way to conceal carry in overalls.
I have to wear both because I carry a heavy fixed blade knife, leatherman, and a phone holster on my belt every day. Yes all three are essential, I use them all multiple times throughout the day and its the best solution for me. Besides it makes me drop dead gorgeous too!!!

I’m 42 and I switched to suspenders about 2 years ago but missed my multi tool that I always kept over my back pocket. I just settled on elastic “stretchy” belt and elastic suspenders that hook directly to the belt. I’m not winning any fashion awards but I’m not rushing to take off my tools every chance I get like some guys.

Tool belt destroyed my back and hips a long time ago. Started strapping suspenders to it about a decade ago to put the weight on my shoulders instead. Huge difference. Less pain, and the tool belt isn't constantly trying to take my pants off.

Maybe my hips and butt are just small but I can't stand wearing bags with just a belt. So much nicer to spread the load out a bit.
Either way, you're gonna take some damage. Guys who start out wearing suspenders on their tool belts end up with horrible shoulder pain, compressed vertebrae, and even a hunchback. Those guys end up going the opposite way from you and start wearing a belt only. And hopefully they retire before they ruin their hips. The only way to avoid damaging one part of your body or another is to take the belt off whenever possible and wear it only when you have to. I know, I'm in the trades, depending on the task or your boss that's not always possible. But that toxic "can do" attitude about wearing a tool belt 100% of the time on the job is gonna have to change if we are gonna get honest about the hazards of wearing a tool belt, suspenders or no, and the damage it causes to your body.

In the Army, I added suspenders. When you have so much in your BDU (pants), belts are not good enough. It *CHANGED* everything. As I was looking at my LBE (Load Bearing Equipment), I realized it had a suspender for a reason. I still had to wear a belt (regs are regs) but in the field, having suspenders was a game changer. As an Infantry guy, we were down range quite a bit.

I wore braces (the "gentleman's" word for suspenders) regularly with my required suits in the corporate world for 25 years. Then everything went "business casual", and the belt came back for the remaining 15. That said, I totally get your point about comfort if you want to take weight off your hips when carrying tools.
Not so much the "gentleman's" as the "British" word -- in the UK, "suspenders" is the word for the things that hold up women's stockings.

I switched to suspenders on my nail bags about 25 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I have recently switched to suspenders for every day use on my pants and also the best thing I’ve ever done.
I don't know what is with construction people. So much wisdom! You gentleman have the capability to take a big problem and simplify to the extent that it becomes a pill that you swallow and the problem is solved.
I recently made the switch to braces (UK term for US suspenders) mainly because I was spending too much time pulling up my trousers (UK term for US pants). Mostly I have been using clip type, which has led me to an interesting line of research regarding whereabouts the clips should fix to the waistband: I noticed that old military uniforms tended to put the front attachments near to each other, that is not far out from the fly, whereas pre-buttoned trousers had the fixings almost above the hip, particularly the outer button of the two. The only fashion reference I could find on the subject was that “the line of the braces should be directly above the front crease of the trouser leg”.
The upshot of this for me is that the braces feel better when the clips are closer together and the 2 straps are roughly parallel, but when the clips are further apart the upper part of the braces (outside of the nipples) gets pushed out by the chest, so makes you look more muscular but can lead to them slipping off the shoulder.
So I agree with the high Y and would add clips close together.

Wearing a duty belt as a police officer for 25 years, I can attest to the nerve damage that belts do. For many years after retirement the skin on just the surface of my thighs was numb. I now have my own handyman business and my bags have suspenders. Even when I’m not wearing bags, I wear suspenders. Belts have always been frustrating for me because I am gluteusly challenged but became more so when I started my business. Nothing brings the frustration like pulling up pants all day.
Lol can you define gluteusly challenged for me please? 😂 Does that mean you're a skinny guy with no butt? Or the opposite? Either way I might have to start using that one 😁

I'm 66 with 52 years as a professional Carpenter/ site supervisor. Buy the time I was 26 my Dr asked about the stretch marks on my hips, it was my tool belt. Over the years I moved from a fully loaded framers belt, to a Canvis tie on belt to no belt as a supervisor. Now I'm going back to working with a belt again and the suspenders are on my Christmas list.
Just made the switch and they are by far more comfortable. I do tree work and can’t wait to see how much better I feel at the end of the week, I also noticed that my right leg stopped falling asleep since making the switch. THANK YOU!
I had posture issues and tend to slouch. Ever since making the switch to suspenders 5 years ago, it has helped me tremendously with correcting my posture.
That belt-suspenders advice your dad gave you was invaluable. I do see some older men commiting that faux pas and it certainly was jarring.

When I was 18 I was a very very fit male. Started out doing drywall and after a year I was having chronic nerve pain in my hips and lower back. The guys I worked with wore suspenders and didn't need their belts so tight. I got on board and now at age 37 and a full time carpenter. I have no body issues at all. Best decision I ever made
I've been wearing suspenders for about 35 years.
Downside to button attachment - they're hard on wood furniture. I rivet a piece of leather to the leather button hole pieces that covers the button when attached.

After watching this video I bought two pairs of suspenders and two pairs of key pants. Also added buttons to about 75% of my jeans. I have no more hip pain or back pain from a belt working as an electrician. Got a few weird looks from guys and the other men in my family but now multiple others have started wearing them and swear by them like I do. Greatly increased my comfort. This is also the video that led me to this channel and I haven't stopped watching yet!
I'm a plumber and I have and recommend the clip on Makita suspenders, they're so good. It's not only better on the hips but the guts aren't too constricted at work!

Well done! I laughed at one point because the whole "belt & braces" idiom from the UK. A 20-year Army vet, not only did I appreciate the extra padded suspenders for the load bearing equipment, but some of us also discovered that the weird stretchy suspenders that came with 1980's era rain suit worked amazing and could hook through your belt loops. My old, faded suspenders are about to get replaced this week. I'm in Tennessee so besides fading, there's the whole sweat thing; having a pair that don't smell like neglected gym equipment has become important me in my small shop. 😉
32 and I've never liked wearing belts... I got a pair of overalls for work and the feeling was amazing. I don't know why I never thought about suspenders... Definitely going to get a pair!
I switched to suspenders in my suits a few years ago when i was singing because it'd allow my stomach to expand and contract more and I have no intention of ever going back. I love it
A belt and braces (suspenders) man, always has several layers of security! Us english used it for bankers, when they wanted several layers of collateral for a bank loan, hence a "belt and braces loan" by a "belt and braces guy"!! Haven't tried braces since I left the forces, but I'm now seeing a damn good reason for them. Helps stitching your own buttons too!! Great video, keep it up!! 👍👍
I started wearing suspenders and pleated trousers one day and it changed my life. My hot flashes essentially went away, I feel much cooler and honestly it just looks better too. Its kinda sad that you have to deal with people saying something about them almost on daily basis especially since Im only 30 so people think Im making some sort hippie statement. I just say “Im tired of wearing rags” and usually people move on.
Also if you cant find suspenders locally, try Dillards! They have that roundtree and york brand with belts and also suspenders nearby too, they come with the clip AND buttons you can sew on for the proper way.
I started with suspenders about a month ago. I was tired of the pressure around my waist from leather belts. It shapes your waist awkwardly and reduces your range on your hip range of motion. I realized over the past few years that old boys chose suspenders, overalls, and coveralls for performance. I’ve started with clip ons, but plan to have bachelor buttons installed in my work britches.
I recommend them.
I bought some Outdoor Research suspenders to go with my winter hiking pants this year, gonna see how that works. They are a Y-shape set with velcro and will only really work with Outdoor Research pants that have loops sewn in. I think the most important thing in this video for me was learning the term "bachelor buttons". I had no idea what they were called, and it makes searching for jeans or pants with them difficult. I'm a guy with a lot of loose skin from weight loss, suspenders help so much with keeping me from muffin topping when I'm wearing tucked shirts. I do prefer the style of belts but looking 5lbs slimmer in the waist is arguably better, imo.
Only reason I haven't switched to suspenders yet is because I like my buckles. I live in the midwest and like dressing the cowboy way with the dinner plate belt buckle. However, from a practical working-man sense, suspenders are the way to go. I plan to get some studded buttons to attach to my wranglers and just wear suspenders. I like the 'logger' look with the pin-stripe grey shirts too.

I didn't have problems holding my pants up with a belt when i was younger. But now I'm an old guy who has lost the bigger butt of younger years. I often have heavy stuff in my pockets and have had to drill more holes in the belt to make it tighter. And it's awkward to tighten your belt in public when your pants are falling down. I've been thinking of trying suspenders...and now I'm gonna. Thanks..
I am a follower of Buckins channel, and have always been a belt guy until he offered up his suspenders...I ordered a pair to custom fit. And I haven't stopped wearing them!! They are amazing!!!!!
I agree with suspenders on my work pants. Was tired of my shirt always lifting in back as I was hunched over all day. Since I added suspenders, a whole new ball game. Way more comfortable. However, as I do not wear a carpenters belt 99% of the time, I still wear the belt in addition to the suspenders. I just keep the belt loose and pants a bit big on me. That way the pant waist “floats” as I move and my shirt stays tucked. I still wear the belt cuz something’s gotta hold my Leatherman & K-Bar. 😂 Don’t work without them. Very very interesting! I'm a professional farrier in my mid thirties, skinny as a T-post and I've been having some major trouble with my hips the last couple years. Im 23. I was a part time welder on the farm since i was 15. When i turned 18 i got full time since i graduated high school. I used to wear overalls all the time, didnt have a problem. They were my pants and the didnt fall off of me. Since i was maybe 18 i switched to just bluejeans and a belt. Ive never had a need for suspenders myself. My dad wears them everyday. But i believe what you said about key. They were the only overalls i would wear. Very good brand. Key overalls and a carhartt coat. Now its wranglers and ariat
You inspired me to make the switch. I used to buy pants with a string because belts made me uncomfortable. That sort of worked even though it wasn't really comfortable. I think I will keep using suspenders. Right now I'm experimenting with where to place the buttons to make it the most comfortable. Most of us wear pants everyday to work. It doesn't make sense to be uncomfortable everyday because of something so basic.
Good morning suspenders for 35 years my crew used to tell me that you could tell how close it was to quitting time by how big the crack in my butt was. I sew buttons on the inside of my Wranglers and buy suspenders at the Suspenders Store. Great channel thanks
this is funny. I bought suspenders because I thought they were cool, but I discovered they were much more comfortable. Explaining this to friends seems like just an excuse, but I'm glad to see someone else who thinks the same thing. I've been wearing suspenders for about 10 years now.
