Lyrics:
Winter's cityside, crystal bits of snowflakes
All around my head and in the wind
I had no illusions that I'd ever find a glimpse of
Summer's heatwave in your eyes
You did what you did to me, now, it's history I see
Here's my comeback on the road again
Things will happen while they can
I will wait here for my man tonight
It's easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight, big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, ooh, the eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright, pay then I'll sleep by your side
Things are easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan
Neon on my naked skin
Passing silhouettes of strange illuminated mannequins
Shall I stay here at the zoo? Or should I go
And change my point of view for other ugly scenes?
You did what you did to me, now, it's history I see
Things will happen while they can
I will wait here for my man tonight
It's easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight, big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, ooh, the eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright, pay then I'll sleep by your side
Things are easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight, big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, ooh, the eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright, pay then I'll sleep by your side
Things are easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight, big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, ooh, the eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright, pay then I'll sleep by your side
Things are easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight, big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, ooh, the eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright, pay then I'll sleep by your side

Yeah I was enjoying my prenatal time back then. Incredible times.

How would it stop being a masterpiece?

This was real music these times back then.
What’s even crazier, and possibly very inspiring/motivating for aspiring musicians, is that none of them knew how to play any instruments; and yet, they still managed to produce such great music. With technology of the times (synthesizers, drum/rhythm machines, etc), they were able to turn the music they had in their heads into reality, without any knowledge of playing instruments…a magical time. Nowadays, it’s even easier…but you still need the talent/creativity to produce magic like this.
Hh
Still listening 2025🎉❤
fun fact: when this came out, the singer Marian Gold was still working as cooks mate in his hometown in Germany. it got a lot of radio airplay and so one of the cooks said: "son, they are playing your song all day long" and fired him. so the singer was fired because his boss didn't want him to waste his career peeling potatoes

The phrase "Big in Japan" from the 1984 song by the band Alphaville refers to the idea of being famous or successful in a distant or foreign place, especially in Japan, while remaining unknown or struggling elsewhere.
In the context of the song, it symbolizes escaping reality and fantasizing about success or a better life in a faraway place. Japan was chosen because, during the 1980s, many Western artists and bands who didn't achieve mainstream success at home were surprisingly popular in Japan.
The song itself is more about yearning for a better future and dealing with personal struggles (such as love and addiction), using the notion of being "Big in Japan" as a metaphor for an idealized escape or sense of hope.
In Portuguese it's similar to the saying, "Santo de casa não faz milagre", or "Home grown saints don't work miracles".
Absolutely best description of the song and idiom's meaning. 👍

80s music was amazing
How did the 80s manage to both be so ridiculously random and so amazingly awesome at the same time?
then the mind used it for right things and not for the nonsense of today 🙂
we were so blessed to live in such wonderful freedom
hahahahha you are right
The 80s were the beginning of the tech age but it went to shit after the 80s.
Because actual talent made it big because more people voted to spend actual money for the records based on actually liking them than voted for a puerile TV entertainment show because they were sucked in by the hype and fomo? Just guessing, I could only afford to buy one or maybe two singles per week in the 80's, but voting a few pennies while sitting on my ass using my phone appears easier nowadays. I don't bother doing it, never have, but it still has the appeal of being simple and inexpensive. BTW I still have all the records I bought and a record player so i can listen to any of the music I originally thought was worthwhile. About 5% of it gets ignored, the rest gets a listen at least once a year, much more for some great songs! I feel like I got value for what I spent back in the day. Personally I would rather be able to still listen to the media I bought for as long as i like than have a stream removed because some beancounter exec decides it isn't making enough revenue. I grew up being able to do that and simply don't like companies taking away what I paid for because they already got my money and don't care if I get value or not so long as they get their profit.
I am Japanese teenager and this masterpiece caught my heart❤

40 years later, it keeps being a great song! Congrats, Alphaville, wherever you are‼️

I wrote a song about a New Wave girl called "(She's Living A) Plastic Life" and within a couple years, it had gotten lots of airplay on the the local college radio station. 30 years later, when we started Heroineburgh, I rewrote the lyrics, and it became our theme song, "(She's Living In) Heroineburgh". Every episode of ours is named after a song or artist from the 80s. So, yes, it was quite an inspirational 'era of plastic' (and I would add many more groups to the list, such as Gary Numan, Yaz, Howard Jones, Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and Front 242).

80's music is something special!
A spitzenklasse song from a spitzenklasse album by a spitzenklasse band; Alphaville.
A strong Far Eastern vibe to this German made song and its video. To be "big in Japan" was a dream for many musicians in the 1980's; a time when Japan was at its height economically and industrially.
The song this album is from doesn't have a single bad track on it and such music albums are rare. It fully loaded with first-class synth-pop.
I live in Sweden and Alphaville were big here in the 1980's. Their music still lives on; in many people's hearts and minds and here in cyberspace as well.

Thankful for friends who turned me onto these artists.
German artists brought out some killer hits that era.
oh yeah, brilliant tunes
German efficiency........didnt even know they were German !!!!
Yea, UFO/MSG, Scorpions, Falco, Goombay Dance Band (maybe not the last one).
@@roylennie8117 😂😂haha Goombay dance band

@@sushigirl1069 Can't remember the last band, don't think they had a hit here did they? How about The Rattles?
Still sounds perfect after so many years! Masterpiece!
One of my all time favourites, and I'm a 80's metal head, remember this song like it was yesterday
Were did the time go
I was a teenager when I first heard this master piece ! Like the whole world, I instantly fell in love with this song ! Funny that now in September, 2024 I like it EVEN more this song ! Amazing energy ! THe beat and his voice anre so powerful ! Brilliant !
The sound of the 80's is unbeatable! Current music is flat, dull, the copy of something else. Simply daunting...
+Mara Iapoce I blame radio and tv stations for that, things have become sanitized, computer playlists, no DJs anymore, etc. No room for new music to come in. DJs used to go to clubs and concerts and brought the new music they liked back to the airwaves during their shows. I remember one DJ in Ottawa who decided one night to listen to the new Jethro Tull album, so he played the whole thing on air from start to finish. Others I saw at dance clubs when small unknown bands were visiting from other cities. Meanwhile Adam Curry and others on MTV used to bring in new bands, played music videos... It's sad how much things have changed.
+Mara Iapoce le wrong generation
Music today is about the artist NOT the music
Probably some of them are unpresentable, but Hammerfall, Nightwish, Ensiferum, Turisas, Equilibrium, Two Steps From Hell, Future World Music beat 80's IMO.
Mara Iapoce your right..
im on that 80's era.
I dunno why but I love this version of the song better than any other version. I just love how it sounds a little bit deeper and slower, it's amazing
Because it has been slowed down a bit
Ghoulin_ Its actually the original. What you talking about is the album version.
I agree, I like this slower version better ...
Ane Brun tho.... nothing beats her version
daniel cross was the original slowed down tho? I dont know if its because ive heard the other version so much, but this one just seems like hes singing so slower and im not sure if he sang it this slow or they slowed the track down?
I was 24 & now 64 yrs young and I still enjoy this song! Timeless 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
