How are we 26th in pass but 1st in 3rd downs? Also how do we so with pass in the past few games. I feel like what Bills and 49ers put on tape should have us worse than 26
Also fully disagree that beating this team meant nothing. This stadium, this team - you can listen to Amon in the St Brown podcast - this game needed to be won to get that get back
I'm playing devils advocate. We played garbage defense on purpose for the first 3 quarters. I think we were really trying to avoid injuries so we didn't play until the 4th. As soon as the 4th quarter started we pretty much shut them down aside from that last drive at the end.
I needed this breakdown. I was at the game and couldn’t understand why Kittle was getting so wide open. In real life he looked more a problem than Pearsall. If you could do a video of all of Kittles catches and why he smoked us - that would be really interesting. Same with Pearsall - why did he have a career day. On the flip side I thought Bosa was a nightmare - what did he do so well? He even got a holding on Penei but I believe that was a trip on the field.
2nd half adjustments gave up 2 scores. 1 of which came with :52 seconds left in the game up 12 points. SF threw everything they could at us. We won. Don’t sweat the small stuff
Shooting free throws in practice vs shooting them on the road will look strikingly different. It’s far more difficult for players on the field to communicate
What they gave up in the first, they didn't give up in the second. The Lions adjusted and got them twice. Purdy played the best half of football he ever played.
Im sure AG had a game plan for the defense , but when you have guys out there, that's not used to playing because your 1st and 2nd string is out. If you're pissed just imagine how he feels with his job on the line even though he's dealing with the injuries.
I fully understand that the injuries were not solely responsible for the defenses performance. However the majority the guys who played on defense poorly were the guys that were recent practice squad elevations or deep rotation fringe 53 man roster spots. Which if you think about it, the reason they are out there playing is only because of injuries. Those guys were on practice squads or not on any roster for a reason. The reason being they have major deficits & lack NFL level instincts because they dont have a lot of meaningful regular season snaps to keep up with the game on the NFL level. With positions like LB & DL it takes a lot of snaps to have enough experience to get to NFL level scheme awareness & have in-game IQ /recognition. Take for example Jack Campbell his snap totals from last season are similar to what a lot of guys that were elevated mid-season have for the entire career now & at past NFL stops. Rookie 1st round pick Jack Campbell struggled most of last season at times looking a lot like how guys played vs 49ers. Year 2 Jack Campbell is confident, can recognize formations, anticipate where or what play is coming & he doesn't end up out of position because he bit on a fake. He is a totally different player because the learning curve is steep at that position. Missed tackles & holes in coverage are caused by guys getting pulled out of position. Good to great Defense at the NFL level is about recognition & in-game awareness poor defense is the result until guys get up to speed. Playing catch up from being out of position leads to poor technique, wrong angles of pursuit, missed tackles & holes in coverage. Normally inexperienced guys are sprinkled in on defenses they dont make up the majority of the players on the defensive side of the ball. With as much inexperience the Lions have on defense it cant be helped on how it takes a toll on vets who often end up out of position trying to make up for the errors of inexperienced guys.
Absolutely man! 💯He’s definitely gotta sprinkle more zone and zone blitzes. Or they need to show one look and audible out sometimes once the offense calls motion. They gotta confuse Darnold and we have been getting blazed on those pick plays. Zone squashes that shit. Gotta flip from man to zone and zone blitz to maximize this defense roster.
Ezekiel Turner #47 is the worst player on the field whenever hes out there. Im not even sure why they play the guy. Shouldve kept David Long or Kwon Alexander.
The one thing about AG is they’ll tighten all of that shit up this week. The only concern is the Jefferson Hockenson conundrum and all that man coverage without Anzalone & Carlton Davis. I sure hope we can give some full blitz looks that turn into zone and conversely some soft zone looks that turn in zone blitzes. Gotta confuse Darnold cuz we aren’t getting home a lot. Going to be challenging but Lions got this. FGs instead of TDs. Get stops on 3rd a few times. Get a fumble or a pick or two. And let JG, St, Jah, Laporta, & Jamo and the boys up front get us the title! Go Lions! 🦁
Didn’t really get home vs 49ers O line - filled with lots of recent practice squad guys, decimated by injuries. I hope the energy of the D line is different at home vs Minnesota
I think Lions were putting on a show for Vikings, knowing they would be studying this game for Sunday. Lions are not above trickery, as we all know, and some of it is brilliant. Think Gibbs in front of playboard. Lions knew they could outgun SF in a shoot-out,what you saw on defense was well orchestrated by AG in my opinion. If they lost it, it did not matter but the propaganda would be valuable. Just a thought
This is an insane take. Besides Anzalone maybe coming back it’s largely the same roster. Minnesota should just focus on the weaknesses that 49ers put on tape
You sir, are a voice of sanity! Our secondary needs help! they seem to be at a loss on dam near every pass play! We can not win with our secondary in a state of confusion, and these wunder kids are lost!!!
6:00 how u gon show a play where there was a flag for opi and say the denfender messed up. U talkin about how bad practice squad players are and blaming the dc?? I wouldve agreed with a statement of these mistakes cant happen if the lions are gonna make a deep run, but these guys are being thrown into situations they were never meant to be on the field for

@@spiritofdetroitpodcast Hey there.... new subscriber here. I see/understand your stance. Good analysis. All I have to add at this point, is we as a team/fan base have to absolutely keep the faith that our entire coaching staff will definitely pull through. We all have to keep up a more positive attitude & not let panic/doom & gloom set in that can ultimately affect our infamous "NORTHERN SAVAGES"energy! Remember: " One Azz Cheek & 3 Toes" MENTALITY! I also love the different perspectives here from our #ALLGRIT fan base.... Happy New Year to all! LFG 🎉🦁💙🤍🖤🌟🔥🏈🏆
@ u are right im with you - truthfully we didn’t need this video but I felt we had to talk about it because it was the elephant in the room - we had a strong dialogue and now we can work past all this
Tape don't lie. Great analysis as always. We were all happy to get the W, but that defense ain't gonna cut it next it week or in the playoffs. Let's F------ go!
It seems like teams offenses are adapting to run the misdirection and deceptions that Ben Johnson Lions used to be the best at. If the defense wasn’t so banged up, the Lions wouldn’t have to raid other teams’ practice rosters to fill those empty positions. And they wouldn’t have to keep re-doing the same basic defensive patterns against teams whose plays are progressively more complex or involve more deception.
Its hard to stomach this Lions defense. When we were a losing team, we had a better defense than this. As good as the offense is, we will not be able to win it all with this group. You can't spot the great teams with great quarterbacks 5 and 6 straight scores from 5 and 6 straight possessions
There are a lot of guys here thay haven't played together much and don't have established chemistry which is a big factor. Either that or Aaron Glenn is not coaching them right.
So defense is missing hutch, davis, davenport, anzalone, barnes, Rodriguez, McNeil(those are just to name a few) so if the starters were missing guys on the offensive side like st brown, laporta, sewell, decker, Monty(he's already out)...would you pick apart Ben Johnson? Or would you just say "oh well he doesn't have his weapons? Just a question cause glenn is working with who? Kerby joseph and Brian branch? Those are probably the only pro bowl players on the defense right now..ok you can say Reader and Campbell too..we are literally missing our entire LB core we have to put practice squad players....zz Smith has regressed. You gotta have the players man. This video was really pointless to make there's no way you make this video with 6 offensive KEY players out. As soon as Aaron glenn is gone as a HC somewhere else you're gonna make a video "dang...we really miss glenn" smh pointless video
@spiritofdetroitpodcast man I get you wish and hope it's the scheme and coaching I know you wish it was that and you think "oh it can be fixed of glenn does this...or that" I understand you do not want to come to that conclusion that our defense will most definitely be exposed more and more vs the vikings and in the playoffs. Its hard to accept man trust me I get it. If we had our defense we would definitely go to the superbowl now....with this defense. Wr may not even make it to the NFC championship game. You're in denial that it's more than just the injuries. Like I said and you won't answer it but if the offense was missing 6 key starters and the offense becomes bad...would you even make a video about ben Johnson? Or would you just say "oh no we are just hurt" let's say you take gibbs away right now...along with monty? You're telling me that coaching is gonna make craig Reynolds and Jefferson run like gibbs and monty? It's the logic you are using
I agree 💯 percent with this statement. Most of the current players in this defense hasn’t played an entire year with each other and yet somehow we find a way to win games with whomever we put out there. Missed tackles and blown assignments isnt on the coach
@Poncho_Leo ok I got you on the missed tackles. That Is a problem for sure. They usually are more disciplined on the tackling that part I 100% see what youre saying on that
just a part 1 gotta really study the defense and all its aspects ! Thank you for your feedback
Does Minnesota use pick plays? If they don’t they should vs TA
How are we 26th in pass but 1st in 3rd downs?
Also how do we so with pass in the past few games. I feel like what Bills and 49ers put on tape should have us worse than 26
I think 47 has made a good tackle in his life. Reeves Maybin is just off IR I saw that play with Kittle and he looked slow.
Also fully disagree that beating this team meant nothing. This stadium, this team - you can listen to Amon in the St Brown podcast - this game needed to be won to get that get back

The defense AG incorporated was not the issue the players have got to execute better....Happy New Year AG!!!!
It's just more 🤡 that wanna drag AG name through the mud. Top 10 D with a bunch of YMCA players
Why do Lions fans complain about their defense not being as strong as it should be
A win is a win.
That is how I see it
What they gave up in the first, they didn't give up in the second. The Lions adjusted and got them twice. Purdy played the best half of football he ever played.
We’re not scared and are up to the moment, we have the players to win this game, period. Lions 27-20, #1 seed, NFC North Champion, period, let’s ride.
Im sure AG had a game plan for the defense , but when you have guys out there, that's not used to playing because your 1st and 2nd string is out. If you're pissed just imagine how he feels with his job on the line even though he's dealing with the injuries.
This game was hard to watch our defense looks even worst than last season an it starts with our d line.
Wake up bro the lion's are playing second and third stringers, what the hell to expect and were still winning.
I fully understand that the injuries were not solely responsible for the defenses performance. However the majority the guys who played on defense poorly were the guys that were recent practice squad elevations or deep rotation fringe 53 man roster spots.

He need to stop playing so much man coverage. When they started playing zone that's when they started making stops
I said the same thing fam
Absolutely man! 💯He’s definitely gotta sprinkle more zone and zone blitzes. Or they need to show one look and audible out sometimes once the offense calls motion. @@DexDiamond4 facts
Not disputing how bad the defense played however the coaches know and know they have to fix it!
Ezekiel Turner #47 is the worst player on the field whenever hes out there. Im not even sure why they play the guy. Shouldve kept David Long or Kwon Alexander.
I agree immensely

Yea I used it as example of the type of plays and routes they were doin. I’ll be better next time
Ur right tho

You're exactly right, we need to play more zone.

53, 51 and 47 are trash when covering, they are better with the run.

Of note Kerby on defense turned the game. Him and branch are likely all pros - it’s a lot on their shoulders but they are game changers
Yea, the defense looked like that blind kid that wanted to play football. It's on RUclips if you don't believe me
Yup!
There are a lot of guys here thay haven't played together much and don't have established chemistry which is a big factor. Either that or Aaron Glenn is not coaching them right.
Total yards by each team says alot.
This D problem is going to bite us in playoffs. You cannot give up 40+ points and continue to win.
Therrion Arnold is just plain not good.
Hoping we play better at home bro I think anzalone might play 🤞
I think so too, that would be huge!
Excellent analysis.
