Ukraine: Russian forces are 'falling apart' around Kherson

  • A former advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense believes "rout" is the right word to describe Russian forces around Kherson.
Lieutenant Colonel (Ret'd) Glen Grant has told Forces News he believes the Ukrainians have gained a clear upper hand in the war against Russia.
"They are just falling apart," he said of the Russian aggressors who are, in some areas, making a disorderly retreat.

I keep thinking about that Ukrainian woman giving sunflower seeds at a Russian soldier telling him to put in his pocket so that they could grow when he fell on the ground. This was at the start. How profettic that statement was. Who would have said that she was right in her confidence about how the Ukrainian army would perform

I pinpoint that as the moment Ukraine won the war. Putin's objective was to be welcomed by the Ukranians on his way to overthrowing the government. Then he could have dictated all his conditions to Ukraine: a puppet government, loss of territory, loss of sovereignty either outright or via some sort of made up federation. When Ukranians reject the invaders, rally up to their (before the war reasonably unpopular) government, rally up to their armed forces there was nothing that could be done. Russia could even conquer Lviv, go all the way to the polish border but even that was just a delay to an eventual defeat.

No it wasn`t. The Russian Army under Tsar Nicholas 2 was an even worse paper tiger than the current one. About 1.7 MILLION Imperial "soldiers" became charred, mangled, dismembered, and bullet riddled corpses under the German and Austrian weaponry. Many were sent to the front line with no weapons, food, or even winter clothing, effectively turning many of them into cannon fodder. This led to the collapse of the Tsarist monarchy and the death of Nicholas 2 and his wife and children even as what was left of Imperial Russia began disintegrating into an EVIL Civil War that killed more than 15 million people, completely exterminated the entire political structure and economy and society, and left the Bolsheviks ruling over what became a huge dead pile of debris, destroyed communities, and piles of dead bodies.

Is it truly surprising, though? For such a weirdly storied army, the fact of the matter is that, historically speaking, Russia has never managed to maintain a truly strong and competent military for any real duration, they're constantly having some debacle against some foreign force, it's why they're so paranoid about invasions in an age where wars of territorial conquest are clearly at an end. If it wasn't the Mongols and the Golden Horde, it was the Teutonic Knights, or the Swedes, or the Poles/Lithuanians, or the Turks, or the Prussians, or the armies of Revolutionary France, or the Japanese navy, or (hahaha) Finnish farmers, the Germans and their Austrian Mini-Mes, or of course the Afghans, etc., etc.. They've had spans of years or perhaps a few decades where they've acquitted themselves well, but somehow they always seem to eventually revert to garbage status sooner or later and have to start over. It's an army made largely of conscripts taken against their will and sourced from a brutal society comprised of individuals with the collective mindset of a beaten dog that, absent the threat of some truly horrific invader, is _always_ going to suffer from serious morale problems and poor esprit de corps.

I thought that at the start. I assumed that there would be some kind of uprising in Russia against the war, but essentially there was nothing. Sadly, most Russians, no doubt including military, seem to have been fully behind this.
I guess things might change as it becomes more apparent that the Russians are being defeated but I'm not expecting Russian people to feel anything other than aggrieved and resentful towards the West.

Nothing says _"from Russia with love"_ more than feeling Russian troops leaving behind tanks, APCs and self-propelled artillery in _'good working order'_ which is promptly turned around and used by the Ukraines to pursue and rout more orcs.

If Russia doesnt bother to equip its soldiers with cold weather gear i really cant see the war lasting past this winter.
It'll just be too much to cope with for the average conscript on top of the already low morale when their comrades start freezing to death in the trenches.
At this point surrender becomes really attractive

I think that it was Ukraine's original plan to wait until Russian defenders got hungry and cold to attack, but the Russian soldiers aren't waiting for that. They know that supply lines have been cut and that if they don't have food and clothing by now that it's not coming at all. So they aren't going to torture themselves for nothing, they are running or surrendering while they still have the strength. Besides the TREND has already been well established, -it's OK to pick up and run, EVERYBODY has been doing it all over Ukraine for nearly a month, so why stay and die?

It's all thanks to western military tactics. The fast light vehicle hit and run tactics were used by the British and U.S. force's in north Africa during WW2. But what's really helping the soldiers on the ground is all the training by NATO and the military equipment and strategists from the west helping to plan and give vital Intel on these operations. When you have friends with an eye in space watching every inch of the ground your chances of success is increased

Exactly, prayers for all those soldiers on each side and all the Ukrainian civilians that are still going to die and their families. When this war ends Ukraine is going to want rather harsh terms and justifiably so. The caution though is that excessive terms can lead to another Hitler, like the terms of WWI did. So we need to keep the Russian economy and military in check after this war. But we need to also permit Russians to be able to make a decent living and not try to completely humiliate them. War crimes, must however, be punished.

That is my thoughts exactly that the russians will in no way have the capability to wage war during the winter months. They will be found frozen to death all throughout. This is a great opportunity to further exploit their weaknesses and to provide the Ukraine army with all necessary equipment to be able to withstand the cold as comfortably as possible.
