    Excellent breakdown, as always. Leaving the arm out to extend the forward motion until the entering arm is about even really helps remedy the slipping.

    You are so right on this with everything else that you've mentioned before in your past videos about relaxing too. I recall taking 2 minutes off my 1500 time when I just relaxed my stroke and didn't focus so much on a high turn over. I just focused on swimming comfortably. I think I just also have to remember to keep my elbows in front of my hands and my hands facing the back of the wall so I don't slip. Keep up the great advice.

    Well explained coach. A retired swim coach gave me similar advice on stroke count and applying it allowed me to relax more in the water which actually helped my breathing rythem while also reducing my arm stroke and kicking. Bravo!

    I don’t glide much after kicking off the wall because the pool i use is less than 20m long. I used a 25m pool for the first time ever in September. My stroke count was 20 without kick off gliding. When i first tried front crawl with breathing I had high stroke count because i was afraid if my arms weren’t windmilling i’d not be able to breathe on the side.

    I have a low stroke count, SWOLF in the high 30's but with a glacial two-minute 100M. When I increase my stroke rate, SWOLF increases and distance per stroke goes down, with only a nominal decrease in 100M time because I start slipping. My goal swim time was 1:30s for 100M to be a more competitive age group triathlete. But after 20 years, thousands of hours and laps, poolside instruction, clinics, underwater video analysis, RUclips videos, etc., I have accepted my slow times and now just enjoy swimming for exercise and meditation. The competitive me continues to click on videos such as this one that claims to have the magic fix or drill to improve my time. But my observation, faster swimmers have mastered the "art" of being able to hold the water with high stroke rates. They acquire this art from lots of practice but also intangibles and genetics. I trained next to faster swimmers doing the exact same drills and laps enviously watching as they enjoyed spectacular improvements while I remained plateaued.

    Well, watched this several times. The biggest difference in the 2 variations are with the wrong way, your hand enters the water very close to your head, and it doesn't look like you are getting full arm extension before starting your pull. Kind of difficult to tell that your elbow is leading the pull rather than having a vertical forearm. With the correct way, lots of extension of shoulders and arms. For me, full on sprint, straight arm pull and recover, and arms opposite each other, about 24 strokes per length of the 25 yard pool. If I push off and do a long underwater glide, then I am in the 16 or so strokes per length.

    Which is the best way to breath.....i dont see you breathing inside the water how do you do it.

    The goal is that you don't actually want any backward hand movement at all, ideally,
    You want your hand(palm) and then forearm to hold or anchor on to the water in front of you, your body to rotate and move 'over' that anchored point, and then to finally extend even further beyond that hold point (primarily using the lats at this point as you continue to reach in front)

      Absolutely, that's a great insight into efficient swimming technique! You've described it beautifully. The aim is indeed to achieve a smooth, continuous movement where the hand and forearm engage the water as an anchor. This allows the body to rotate around this point, enabling a strong, effective stroke. The extension beyond this point, especially utilizing the lats, helps to maximize the stroke's reach.     Thank u for all your tips . I started swimming few months ago on my own in a 12m pool . 2 weeks ago , I decided to take a 12 week swim course to improve my swimming and do laps in a 25 m pool . I’ve been getting pounding headaches within 30s of starting the swim. I changed my cap/ googles with no relief . Is it a vestibular thing or anxiety ?. I don’t feel anxious however . What tips can u give me

      I would try ear plugs and assess how you feel from there. Could be a combination of aggressively holding your breath and the water flowing in and out of your ear canal. Hope this helps! Best, Coach Mandy

      Yes, this is a short course pool which is 25 yards. Long course is 50 meters. -CM

    You make it look so easy. How do you do this if your not a floater. I just started learning how to swim and I’m not a floater. How do you slow down without sinking? I haven’t found any RUclipsrs that has any information on how to swim if you’re not a floater! Or for heavier/ muscular or a dense body type

      It's about balance via core strength and a slight kick, and keeping some air in your lungs. Muscular people can learn this!

    Got to be careful and not compare your stroke count with someone your height. Ape index and inseam changes things immensely. That is why you rarely see any RUclips videos showing someone with a -2” ape index and long legs. They are instead usually built to swim and help sell the product

      They are windmilling because their form is off. You can still maintain this whether you breathe on 1's, 2's, or more. ✅ Just needs to be more solidified if so!
