What really pisses me off is that in the free world we have left-wing politicians holding up Cuba as some sort of example that we should all be trying to emulate.

    • @cardoduenez

True, but on the other hand, right-wingers have no problem with far-right autocratic dictatorships as long as they have market economies instead of socialist ones. Conservatives are also morality conformity communists. Fascism applies to both capitalist and socialist autocratic regimes.

@Aqua Fyre I think the point is that people on both the ideological left and the ideological right can exhibit varying degrees of authoritarianism versus libertarianism. The "political compass" idea explores this concept very well. I always keep in mind that our political left/right divide is only half the story, and that (to me as a libertarian) the authoritarianism vs. libertarianism divide is more important.

I originally wanted to make a joke about how "of course the Cuban government doesn't want to allow surfing, 'cuz it'll make them stronger & more able to leave," but watching the rest of it just broke my heart at how the gov't would rather stick the People in the rotting remains of the 1950's-70s than allow growth & prosperity by just admitting that Capitalism isn't the evil they like to see it as. I'm not naïve. I know of the evils of Communism _AND_ the pitfalls of Capitalism, but still… It's like "cutting off your nose to spite your face."

Ha, no we are just joining Cuba. I want to fly my perfectly safe 1 oz plastic toy helicopters and quadcopters around the trees, but even the few inches I fly off the ground its breaking federal aviation laws (about 95% of children and adults would be breaking federal law flying their toy in their own backyard, even if its below fenceline). This is no different than surfing, except WAY safer. Cuba might actually be more free in this regard. You think we will help them? No, if anything we would impose even more laws...

This is great, Cuba needs their people to recognize what they've had stolen from them by their government. I traveled for 3 weeks around Cuba by bike and what struck me most was not the poverty or the terrible food but how resentful they were of the freedoms that people from other countries have. Lots of nice people but also lots of brainwashed idiots. I went there because it is known as a good place to bike tour probably mostly due to the minimal car traffic but it's a sad place that feels like an island prison.

I can put my head under the guillotine blade that those people that you think are resentful feared you in some way and couldn't speak freely. Yes, some Cubans will tell you the truth, but if they don't know you well, some will not. They don't know you or whether you support the regime.

Cuba before the revolution was lead by a fascist leader Batista was a puppet by the US where child prostitution was common and slavery was legal, very little health clinics, illiteracy was high and no rights for black people. Basically pre-Castro Cuba was a casino for rich white Americans and Gusanos!

It's been way too long already. In the case of Cuba, nothing will ever change. If you don't believe that, then you are not a "real" Cuban or don't understand Cubans. If the regime does change by a remote chance, we'll be right back to square one in no time. Country will go from dictator to a fake savior, like the Castro's, to dictator again and on and on. Batista was not a good guy by any means. The horror stories my grandmother used to tell me about Batista weren't pretty.

US does the same. You would think drones would be protected by freedom of speech and to bear arms. Rotor Riot in HongKong proved in so many ways what the media won't, they were able to safely get up close and captured the Chinese shooting first, they were able to fly up and show it wasn't hundreds of people, that it was many thousands, yet drones are illegal in the US about 95% of the time!
I just wanted to fly my perfectly safe 1 oz plastic toy helicopters and quadcopters around the trees, but even the few inches I fly off the ground its breaking federal aviation laws (about 95% of children and adults would be breaking federal law flying their toy in their own backyard, even if its below fenceline). This is no different than surfing, except WAY safer. I'm apparently a criminal for it.
Obviously the government doesn't want you filming their corruption, their lies, them planting evidence or attacking first, hence the US bans these flying cameras (even if they don't have cameras, they are still illegal). The US also doesn't believe in the right to self defense or to keep or bear arms (its illegal for me to have so much as a single shot .22 pistol in my home, or even an old musket for defense in my car, its illegal to even put up my fists in defense of an armed attacker unless I try to run away first even if that's not tactically possible). I'm in the US, however nearby even toy water pistols are illegal, that is how anti-rights they are (I'm near the swamp where all federal laws are made). I've also made weaponized UAVs, so its not like the government had problems with me making THEM weapons or drones, its just peasants like you and I are not allowed to have any of the same tools as the oppressors.

You should read Martin Niemöller's confession if you're not familiar.
Every violation of freedom should be fought no matter how little it matters to you personally or insignificant it may seem in relation to other violations.
Tyranny always advances on all sides and so those who care about freedom should guard all sides even if you don't particularly like or care about them.
