Seniority is not the Award criteria. It's the performance and the impact and contribution to the films and society which matters.
None of the senior actors could bag a National Award at their debut , except Mithun Da. He bagged 3 National Awards in total, 4 Filmfare Awards including BFA, 1 Screen Award and overall 10 Nominations. I am not counting the other awards here. Moreover, his versatility in both Art and Commercial films is unmatchable. Dharam ji or Rajesh Khanna didn't do Art films and were type cast with similar character portrayal. Except Amitabh Bachchan in Saudagar which can be considered as a semi Art film.
On the other hand , see the character of the Adivasi boy with bare body in Mrigaya, the same man portraying a James bond type character in Suraksha and Waardaat ( Gun Master G9) , the same man as a super dancing hero in Disco Dancer which created a new Generation of audience and grossed a worldwide collection of 100 crores first time in India that too in 1982 !
Again the same Glamorous dancing star portraying Ramkrishna Paramhansa in Swami Vivekananda, the character of an old man in Tahader Kotha, the role of a poor boatman in Ek Nodir Golpo, The lungi wala south Indian as Krishnan Ayyer MA, Nobel Chor, and a lot of films again forget about the stereo type commercial hero in hundreds of films( which the rest of the actors did) .
So, the array of characters Mithun Da could do is unparalleled.
