honestly, i don't think grizzam had as much of a well-developed relationship as they could have had, because of how fast it all was. i mean, i absolutely ship them and i'd love them to see them develop in their relationship more in the next season (if there will be one), but it seemed like the creators rushed their relationship in one episode. for one, they met the first time in the prom episode (i forgot which ep it was) and they did have a little funny scene, and it was clear that the two had a lot of chemistry. after that scene, however, the interaction was brushed off and ignored UNTIL ep 8. in that episode, grizz met sam the second time and they bonded over interests, struggles, etc. but that was only for one day, and then suddenly they're in love and then they kiss? whereas with relationships like will x allie and helena x luke, they were given the whole show to develop their relationship. if other relationships are given so much time to develop, then why is grizzam the exception? maybe love at first sight? doubtful. because to me, it just felt like lazy writing.
of course, you dont have to agree and i completely accept that, but that's just my take on it. again i do ship grizzam a lot but i just wish the creators did better at portraying their relationship (esp since it's the only lgbt rep in the show)

I'm not trying to offend anyone here but throughout this whole thing I've just kept wondering, what is the point in Sam signing? It's like incredible how he can just read everyone's lips so easily and knows what everyone is saying, but then that add the signing along with the words, and it makes it a little confusing for me. Like when Campbell and Sam would argue, but it would be in sign-language it almost softened Campbell as a character because he was signing for Sam even when he didn't have to. Only the people that cared about Sam tried to sign for him; this is shown for Becca and especially Grizz. If Campbell is obviously a psychopath who doesn't care about anyone, then why would he bother to sign for Sam? I might be reading too much into this, but I can't help feeling like the severity and emotions of certain scenes was watered down when they started signing. I know that the representation is really important and I was so excited to see this deaf character, but I am so not used to it shown in media that I think it's hard for me to understand. When Grizz signed it was really powerful and emotional and important to the story, but when some other characters did, it didn't strike me the same way. I think it would be really cool for season 2 to have flashbacks, for many reasons such as plot development. And for the flashbacks for Sam, they had the audio muted or dulled so that we would see what it's like for Sam and help us understand his character.

Grizz trying (and initially failing) to learn Sign Language to talk to Sam, their nervous/cute interaction with each other, the fact that (at least in my opinion) they were both actually likable characters. It's just depressing and, frankly, boring to watch for me. she literally tries to kill herself by eating the poisoned pie, but the writers still won't let her have peace. it's just sad to see, knowing that if anyone had been kind to her, she would've avoided it.

I agree that it was rushed. I wish there were flashbacks to show what their lives were previously like, or at least have that as the first episode. This can show why everyone hates Elle, shots of Allie being in Cassandra’s shadow, the tensions between Sam and Campbell. This way, the audience would be able to connect to the characters and better understand them. It also would have been cool to see the town have conflicts for more than five minutes. Like people accepted the coup waaayyy too easily and what if they were to show people becoming desperate for food. Also, Grizz’s struggle with himself would have been an amazing addition.

For people who have watched the society, here’s the best theory (imo)
First of all Pfeiffer (the man who dropped them off in the bus and was hired to remove the smell) is the German word for piper. There is a German fairytale. It’s called the “pied piper of NEW HAMelin”. Get it ? New ham is the town the society takes place in and New Hamelin is the town in the pied piper fairytale. Anyways, the story take place in new hamelin and a man (pied piper) comes into the town which is infested with rats and tells the mayor that he can play a rat friendly tune on his flute that would send all the rats down to the river and they would drown in the currents... for a certain amount of cash. The mayor agrees and tells him he’d pay for it. The pied piper does his job and comes back to the mayor which has now changed his mind and says that he won’t pay. He ripped the pied piper off. The pied piper gets mad and plays a tune that lures the children of the town down towards the river and they drown.
    What have we gathered?
Pied piper (pfeiffer) gets set to do a job but doesn’t get payed (the rat infestation would be the smell of West ham) Kelly and harry saw pfeiffer leaving in a fit because they wouldn’t pay. So what does pfeiffer do ? Takes the kids.
I think it’s roughly based around that story.
I also wonder.......if pfeiffer and whoever drove the other buses dropped them off in new ham and then drove off ..............where did they go ? They’re landlocked. Maybe pfeiffer is still in town. Maybe he’s the one who killed Cassandra because she was too good at her job. She was winning. He was losing. The kids were figuring stuff out too fast and it all stemmed from her. She did look really confused for like a good 5 seconds then asked “why-what are you doing”. Maybe she couldn’t figure out where she had seen his face and then finally figured it out.

personally i really enjoyed the show as I was watching it. it didnt feel all that rushed to me but ig thats just cause it took me a long time to watch each episode. i did like the rush of it and it really did keep me on my toes, i probs wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't so fast. I think the shows main fault is how the ships and characters don't have enough depth (like u said) my favorite part of the show was when they did this a little with elle and helena. the viewers didn't rly know anything about helena except that she was christian and was really big on religion and believed in God and also had a quarterback boyfriend. the same thing with elle: we never rly knew anything about her except that she didn't have a lot of friends and thats why it was so easy for her to trust campbell. The part that i liked was when elle was staying with helena and she told helena the story about when she called elle a thot. I thought this was a rly cool small little detail that if the show went into more depth with (gave us actual flashbacks or just more stories like that) then all the characters would be more like highschoolers and less like adults. don't get me wrong i love a lot of the characters but most highschoolers don't talk like that even when they're put in high pressure situations. The same thing with the ships the reason i liked sam and grizz and luke and helena so much was because they didn't have to open their relationship with a makeout scene or saying they have a crush on someone. their relationships unfolded as the show went on. all of that aside tho i do think the show has a lot of potential and if done right could have a rly great second season.

  • @bradyarnold8450
    @bradyarnold8450 5 лет назад +15

I honestly think the reason for the rushed plot line is not because they wanted everything in by season 1. I honestly think they would've ended with the execution, however so many Netflix shows are picked up and dropped ever year that if a Netflix original is slow or boring not immediately a hit it won't get a season 2. I genuinely see the writers love for this show but I think they fell in love with so many great ideas for the show that when Netflix only granted 1 season, with a season 2 only confirmed if the show does well, that the writers wanted to include all the plots they fell in love with rather than be canceled after season 1 and have so many plots that they loved be not included. Also if they did not include everything the best plot in my opinion which is Elles (however this plot is one of the only ones to extend more than an episode or two) I think that if they did not include Elles storyline or beef up the other ones to make them more interesting ending with the time skip would've meant cancellation before a season 2 however naturally the pie wouldn't have made a satisfying ending to the show and I think the writers saw this so they drew the show out even more. I believe if this show wasn't in the fight that is Netflix's competitive originals lineup and maybe a given 2 season or even 3 from the beggining the flow would've been better. the fault is not the writers nor Netflix but rather the competitive market/bingability of shows

Yeah, I agree with what you said about ships. Teen shows nowadays really only focus on ships because they think it’s all the fans care for, which is untrue. It’s just apart of the deal. That is part of what made Teen Wolf start to suffer. It became all about the ships and what the fans wanted out those ships, and less about the story (aka Season 6B). If teen shows worried less about ships then a lot of them could be a lot better.
And also, I see you ship stydia, do you ship scira? Those two are my number one always and forever. They were done so dirty.

The acting is quiet good for most of them not being “established” actors.
The relationships, when being built upon, have depth and are interesting. Elle and Cam are so intriguing to watch. Sam and Grizz are so cute. Will and Kelly are cute.
The writing is PHENOMENAL for a teen show. This isn’t a Riverdale type of show. It’s a teen show, with relatable teens and rootable teens.
I’m very excited for season two and while I agree with some points you made in the video, with a rewatch a lot of the problems kind of go away.

I guess they kind of did that with the play but they’re relationships with each other could’ve been better developed and established. Maybe then you could also see the part where Helena called Elle a thot so later it could’ve been a subtle reference to how things have changed

I can agree with you on the pacing being the big issue. With so many characters and issues to deal with, the show should've gotten more episodes. My best example why is Emily (The girl that died from the snake bite) and Luke's relationship, I'm not saying I don't like Helena and Luke together but I could see from when they were in the forest they had an intimate dynamic that should've been explored more before she died. I think it could've brought a lot more seriousness with Emily's death to their situation and driven the fear factor the teens have of running a new society. There should've been a prequel episode from, for example, a week before the trip to help people understand the environment and community of West Ham before the "Removal". Mainly so we can understand the history of people's relationships with one another, and how the "Removal" changes their relationships in a greater sense. Hopefully, they can find a way to fix the problems created in the first season storytelling-wise and create a better flow of the show. I can see it if it were paced out better it could've gotten a much hype as Stranger Things did when it first came out. Other then that, I love the show and I've also been almost combusting with my own theories about the ending.

I noticed the pacing problems too... like I could skip through 10 minutes per episode and not miss any important details. These writers assume audiences want more conflicts quickly due to them "assuming" we have short attention spans. But in reality, we don't want more and more meaningless but "exciting" details. We want thought-out and fully developed ideas. A big thing we can learn from this is that if your show/story can have over 40% omitted due to it being "fluff" or having no impact on the plot development... change it and don't keep it in! lmao

I think the thing about Elle's and Campbell's relationship imo is that like... Yes, Campbell was a literal psycho and all but... I feel like it gets even better when at times, Elle/the person that plays Elle is so convincing that you just can't really tell what she's thinking or like who's side she's on. Like it's obvious that she wants to kill Campbell or get rid of him somehow but like... The scene where Elle spits in Allie's face and walks away, it really makes you wonder who's side she's actually on because she makes it so convincing. Becca, in the beginning, is like a cool person. I mean, I started to like her but then she becomes this really moody and annoying person. I mean I don't hate her but the fact that she gets mad at Sam for trying to help is so rude and annoying. I get that she should be like that because like... she's pregnant and all but I mean... I feel like she should've had more time to be... not pregnant. Going with the fact that everything is rushed, I feel like I would like Becca more if I really got to know her before she got pregnant so that she could be more likable. And like... Is it just me or like... does nobody know how people forced Lexie out of her house? I can't remember a scene where they force Lexie out.

I wish that live in you shadow scene was written has Allie saying that instead of her disappearing thing, that she just kept saying things about how everyone needs her and that she can't just check out. Then continue later on to show it instead of telling. That's what I agree with the most. I think it was a great show, love Sam and Grizz as individuals before they became a couple which was cute, but I do also think there were some things that weren't that good, one that you didn't mention was the power problem, they talked about it like any moment they might lose power, and they did, but only once and it was never an issue again. I get that they moved houses to save power, but it would still be an issue.

eh more lord of the flies bc it's about young boys being deserted on an island and trying to establish a society so everything goes smoothly and things don't go awry and nobody has too much power but then it does. animal farm is about overthrowing the person in power and then trying to better the system but eventually doing the same things the previous ruler did.

@@shannonranalli8688 you should reread lord of the flies. It's actually my favorite book because of the symbolism. The fire and the pig head mean stuff and it really makes sense when you figure it out.

to me it was weird how harry just falls into a depression. i don’t remember it well but it seems like it just happened. i completely agree with how rushed it was. like one minute he was with kelly, they break up. then in another (i think maybe even in the same episode) hes hooking up with allie, the play this game and they form a bond. 6 months later he’s in this depression and him and allie don’t even show any interaction besides when she was forced to.

I COMPLETELY AGREE with so many of the points you raised. While I was watching the show and reflecting on it after I thought there was so much unlocked potential and it was so rushed through. It is entertaining and many viewers have enjoyed the series, however, there so many characters and undeveloped subplots that never reached any conclusion. I mean, I only knew who Lexi was because I recognised her from The Heathers but it would be so easy to remember who she even was. I really hope they renew the second season and it’s even better.

i think most of the problems about the society is just that a lot was rushed. i think the creators wanted to cram in as much entertainment as they could because they didn't know if they'd get a second season. the more plots and characters, the more you give the audience to think about, so they'll want another season. now that everyone's hooked and there is going to be season 2, i think the plots will develop better and they'll slow everything down.

I think the society is paced well, alhought I do wish there was more episodes
the fast paced nature in my pov realistically portrayays for teenagers would act if everyone they knew and loved was gone making fast and irrational decisions is something that would happen naturally

It's interesting that everyone seems to hate the characters when in fact this is the first time in a show that I've liked more than one character (even if I hate Will and what's here name Cassandra's sister? Idk lmao)
