I think, creating quests inside the gameplay portion of Brotate can be the way to make fun characters. So even a stand-kill build can be interesting to play not only in the shop.

I agree, a shovel weapon/item would be nice in base. If not similar to the mod, something akin to work with metal detector would be nice or perhaps a enemy speed inhibitor (think trenches).
