    Ασβεστης/Asvestis is Lime and has nothing to do with (the similar sounding) Asbest and it is not toxic, it was used, as paint, mainly against germs and bacteria but now days more for the looks really

      It's the difference between "lime" and "quick lime", or "caustic lime".
      It's still lime though. Both are called asvestis in Greek. And one definitely has to use a plastic or wooden bucket to paint with this asvestis.

I really feel at home when I cross the channel in Corinth; after crossing the Nestani tunnel I feel like kissing the ground 😊. Confusingly, the Greek word for limestone is “asvestis”, that can easily be confused with the poisonous material known as asbestos.
      Don’t worry though, they may sound similar, but if you hear a Greek calling the white material asbestos, you will know that they are in fact referring to limestone.
      Still need precautions because you don’t want to breath dust in, but it isn’t what you think :)

    • @Soleil43215
      @Soleil43215 2 года назад +5

      It's not the same. What they refer to as "asvestis", has nothing to do with the hazardous material you think of. Asvestis is a natural material from limestone mainly and other stones, used in staining walls in Greece dating back to the Minoan civilization and the Knossos Palace. Until today many rural areas use this to stain their backyards instead of using the acrylic paint/stain etc. The reason you see all these white houses along the Aegean and the Cyclades is because the white color reflects the sunlight keeping the house temperature low during the warm summer months.
