This is great info......that I didn't have when I started mine this year in October. My mother always told me alcohol could stunt your growth. LOL Anyway, I may try this next year as it really is ridiculous how tall these things get by themselves. Just in case you don't know, though... once forced bulbs are grown in rocks and water, they are said to never bloom again, so don't be surprised if you plant them outside after doing this, to just see foliage from now on. I've read a lot about this since the first few years (for gifts), I grew them in white aquarium rock. They are so pretty that way. Some say that once planted in dirt outside, they MAY bloom again SOMEDAY, but not to count on it. I decided to start planting them in regular potting medium and IF I coordinate soon enough, I then grow wheat grass around the bulbs to give it a more finished presentation. It only takes a few days to sprout wheatgrass and it's really pretty too. Just fyi, in case you want to save your forced bulbs for further flowering at another time.
Oh my! I tried paper whites this winter and my goodness the smell of the flowers were awful. While the smell was really bad, the plants were lovely. Into the garden they go. Thank you for that tip.
There is a variety that has a weaker smell and I think alcohol reduces it too. Specifically ordered the kind with the stronger smell thinking it was fragrant. Now I'm concerned lol. They just arrived in the mail today
Just planted some today and I see I don't need dirt! - I had been wondering if they would grow just they way you did! -just bought a bunch of rock bags at the Dollar Tree store ;) thanks for all your awesome videos - I love that you're so articulate brief but thorough and right to the point
Hi...you're right about this working...I work for a commercial grower in NJ, and we used it on out paperwhite bulbs for the first time this Christmas. I would say I noticed a difference. You can just use regular alcohol, though. We're just a small, mom and father grower, and my mother mentioned the ratio is 1 part alocohol/13 parts water. Additionally, after the roots form and you give the paper whites the (rubbing) alcohol, you never give them plain water again. I don't know if you're on the west coast or something, but a family friend said they see those things outdoors there.
Hi Jonathan! I wish that paperwhites grew outside for us! I'm in eastern Oregon and we have much harsher winters than the western part of our state. I work at a family-owned garden store and nursery, too. Thanks for watching our video! :) ~Laura
i am growing them for the first time ever i bulb has 4 little flowers on it and yes its pefect with the boze solution i give mine a drink every 2 weeks i think 2 cups of water is perfect as i had to dump out 2 cups of mixture i used a turkey baster to suck up the excess water it worked really good
Wow, I needed to know this a month ago :) My Paperwhites are planted in soil and they're like 2' tall, and of course I had to stake them so they're not real pretty. Next year, I'll know this secret ♥
I didn’t know about this method before hand and mine are extremely tall now. They’re in water because that’s how I got them they’d already been started. I didn’t realize they would get so tall and now they’ve got their first blooms going on.
Do you have a video on what to do with your paperwhite after it is bloomed but he's been done blooming for a while and it's just a bunch of green stock sticking up do I cut those back please let me know
Hola hermosa me gusta tu técnica de siembra !! Yo quiero sembrar también ! Me encantaría me me digas cómo usar el vodka o alcohol q cantidad y cada cuando cambiar el agua ? Muchos saludos de toluca la bella México !!
I don't like it when the roots push up the bulb, especially in a tight, shallow container. I am trying Kenzans-or "frogs", the needle ones-to anchor the bulbs. I pushed the base of the bulbs into the needles before the roots began to grow. The roots are now growing around the needles and the kenzan is heavy enough to hold them down.
mine died...and I gave them Tito's. Um, can you tell me how to revive them now? Can I prune them and plant them in the garden in the spring or try again inside with just plain water?
hi , i watched your video ,i do not have any experience , but i have a question to ask you may help me i want to plant some hycinths bulbs now in Jan. 18th. i want them to bloom in March 20th. can you give some advise to become succesfull please?
the link to the alcohol proportion would not open. So could you please post the correct proportion ? 1 part alcohol to 7 parts water - I read that. but what level of alcohol?. I have some kirsch in the cupboard - on one bottle it says 0, 51 then below it says 40% vol. Then the other kirsch bottle says 32% alcohol. Which one would be the right level of alcohol content to use? Or do I need a different level of alcohol. Is Kirsch acceptable or is something else better to use?
Gordon Tt, I too just realized that the link does not work. I found this one and am hoping it is accurate as I plan to try these for the holidays! www.distilling-spirits.com/tools/calculations/diluting-alcohol/
Could you use some form of rubbing alcohol instead of premium vodka? Is so, I assume one would use less since vodka is about 40% alcohol (80 proof) vs. 70% for my rubbing alcohol.
there should be a rule that the pre-commercial can not be longer than the actual video. and that It can't be the same damn one over and over and over. Going back to blog might be a better plan.
+Joanna Bushman Yep! Just make sure you get your alcohol solution diluted down to 5%. Here's a link to a percentage calculator so you can be sure to get the correct mix! homedistiller.org/distill/dilute/calc
I wish I had seen this before I killed my poor plant. I did it all wrong . First I gave it to much and second I used rubbing alcohol. SMH but in my defense the woman I got the advice from didn't clarify much of anything anyway.
I really love your videos and ideas, they are great. But , please, can you speak a little slower? I'm a British, and also slightly deaf, so the speed that you speak combined with your accent makes it really hard to catch what you say. I don't mean to be insulting, its a genuine request.
Rewatch this every year about this time. Beautiful short paper whites for every Christmas!
Me too!!
I had no idea you've been doing this for over 8 years! I just discovered you this year!
I have about 25 paperwhites growing around my house right now... so lovely.

Nir paperwhites are less fragrant.

Does it affect the longevity and fragrance of the flowers?
What's better than flowers? Intoxicated flowers!
+Sea Sparkle Hahaha! :)
Well, speaking of which, how does this technique affect/influence Paperwhite flowers?
Can we use the solution if we are forcing them in potting soil? Thank you.

Could you do any other bulbs like gladiolus like this?
Or amarylis? That would be great, but they seem to have a different structure. Worth a try.
Hola hermosa me gusta tu técnica de siembra !! Yo quiero sembrar también ! Me encantaría me me digas cómo usar el vodka o alcohol q cantidad y cada cuando cambiar el agua ?

what do you do with the paperwhites after they bloom
Wow, Laura..we buy lots of florist azaleas from Panzer Nursery, in Beaverton.
Good luck to your career.
I have a paper white that I grew this Christmas, can I store and regrow next year?
Am I the only one thinking "why would you use grey goose?" Lol
+Melissa Shim Haha! I grabbed that one on accident, then went and got the absolut, and that's the one I actually used! :)
RIGHT.. Just use prince igor or something. This is alcohol abuse!! lol
Melissa Armstrong No, you are not alone. Maybe that's all she had "open". Or maybe she wanted short but snotty Paperwhites.
@@MsNotfooled 🤣
hi, can I use rubbing alcohol?
Aliza Ahmed I heard you can use isopropyl alcohol in an 11/1 solution.
I would like to know if they blooming?
I don't like it when the roots push up the bulb, especially in a tight, shallow container. I am trying Kenzans-or "frogs", the needle ones-to anchor the bulbs. I pushed the base of the bulbs into the needles before the roots began to grow. The roots are now growing around the needles and the kenzan is heavy enough to hold them down.
I have no idea what a kenzan's are lol So the needles didn't hurt the bulbs huh? How far in did they go?
What kind of alcohol works best. Cheap kind
mine died...and I gave them Tito's. Um, can you tell me how to revive them now? Can I prune them and plant them in the garden in the spring or try again inside with just plain water?
Can you use rubbing alcohol???
May I use rubbing alcohol in place of drinking alcohol ?
will this work for daffodils that are too tall and tend to flop?
Can this be done with all plants?
hi , i watched your video ,i do not have any experience , but i have a question to ask you may help me
i want to plant some hycinths bulbs now in Jan. 18th. i want them to bloom in March 20th. can you give some advise to become succesfull please?

Gordon T Use isopropyl alcohol, 11/1, I heard. Some say 13/1. Then you don't have to worry about "proof". And you get the vodka.
Gordon Tt, I too just realized that the link does not work. I found this one and am hoping it is accurate as I plan to try these for the holidays! www.distilling-spirits.com/tools/calculations/diluting-alcohol/
Kirsch is too sweet. She said not to use alcohols with sugar.
Could you use some form of rubbing alcohol instead of premium vodka? Is so, I assume one would use less since vodka is about 40% alcohol (80 proof) vs. 70% for my rubbing alcohol.
Did you try it? Did it work?
Why are these bulbs so expensive in India?! 😓 does anyone know a site from where I can get them at a cheaper rate?
what do paperwhites look like?
Can I use isopropyl alcohol?
Joswan Prince. Yes. But 11 to 1 solution.

No se hablar inglés pero buscaré un traductor !!

Rubbing alcohol okay ?
They are coming up shorter because they are already half cut....or don't you have that expression in usa meaning drunk?
I wish I had seen this before I killed my poor plant. I did it all wrong . First I gave it to much and second I used rubbing alcohol. SMH but in my defense the woman I got the advice from didn't clarify much of anything anyway.
gin for the paper whites i mean

Good technique but it feels wrong to me to starve the plants like this. Does not feel humane.
The calculator link has expired 😞
i love vodka as a drink could i use gin
Hmm, I think those bulbs are underage...😲
does anyone realise she said 3 inches tall and not 3ft
zanders crochet and crafts she said 30 inches
I gave them a 9% solution. Wroooong! They fell over anyway and can't drive.
Me
This video is hard to watch in comparison with your new ones 😅 the editing and pace of Laura's talking.. Whew 😂
A half cup of water in 3.5 cups water is not 5%
Vodka is 40% alcohol, not 100%.
Talk SLOWER
Theresa Sherman You've already been into the vodka, right?
I forgot to pay attention on the flower. because I was staring at you.
You're very cute
