KITAAB is a masterpiece and we must be thankful to Gulzar for making it. Master Raju , the then child artist, delivered a fantastic performance and will be remembered for being the central character of this classic. This movie is one of those rare movies in Indian cinema where child psychology has been explored and the events that unfold in the life of the child reflects the state of society, it’s impact on humanity and a subtle message for all. The music by RD Burman as expected is top notch and the lyrics ,although unconventional , are so nice. This movie is evergreen in terms of its content but was considered ahead of its time when it was made. Only a great filmmaker can make such a piece of art. A gem of Indian cinema.
Gulzar's screenplay is excellent indeed. However, it's a remake of a film called Barir thekey paliye by none less than Ritwik Ghatak. And the original story is by the renowned story writer Shibram. I found it a little strange that Gulzar didn't give credit to Shibram for original story which Mr Ghatak did.
It's a all time Classic movie. Before I believe it's a children movie. When I view it again, I've realized it's a meaning full and a movie, which gives a lesson about life... As life is a journey & we people are passenger's. So we just be happy & keep walking
