What impresses me is the subtle details that Vermeer baked into his painting that made it so impressionable and the challenge of doing so in the 'real world'. Details I hadn't previously appreciated. I salute your persistence and patience with getting your daughter's photo to be so close to the original.
You get me images of Tony's face from the side and in similar angles to the Last Supper and I think I can do it. Not very well of course but I think it can be done.
This is really cool. Artists are so fascinated with this painting because of Vermeer's ability to capture light in such a wide tonal gradient. Nice work. Will be watching this again.
Beautifully done. Jan Vermeer would be proud. If you've ever studied his work, most portraits of women he painted wore pearls. You two have given me so much inspiration and working knowledge of photography, I do own your book. I love your podcasts. Kudos Maddie! Keep doing what you do, thank you!
Undeniably one of your best videos, and a great great idea. This makes up for a very interesting video, wish it was actually longer. You nailed it too fast almost.
This was a great video. Very fun and informative. So hard to get those subtle nuances just right. The final product is excellent! If you really want to challenge yourselves do the Mona Lisa.
Kudos to Tony, Chelsea and family for trying and doing such a great job at recreating the famous image! With your busy schedules you took the time to do something just for fun, no particular reason and couldn't help doing your best. Glad you guys put out content like this. It really inspires us all.
Chelsea, I love to hear your accent! As a Brazilian, I use your videos also to practice English listening. It sounds so clear to me that I use it as a reference on how pronunciation should be. Thanks!
Just love your behind the scenes, a very patient daughter you got. I find it very interesting to see how you work. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. God bless you and your family
The painting is amazing, it has more depth than a real picture. Thank for a project like this, I slowly understand why an art work in a museum has such an great value.
My wife and I did this exact thing with our high school seniors last year. I even made a video about it on my channel. Great job you two. Probably a better choice of photo than the one you guys were gonna try. Lol
The thing I loved about this video is it show cases how wether your replicate or try to get an image that you see in your head. How that process is literally an entire production all on its own in this case you both but definitely Chelsea took on multiple roles that if anyone needs with a ton of money were to do this would have hired let's say a wardrobe designer, makeup artist, maybe even prop person (just to obtain the ear ring) and maybe a hair person and one to assistants each which is a lot people and then the time spent in getting it just right Tony was like a scientist orchestrating everything to get the lighting right for the right shadowing and hilights. Well done guys I like it
This is pretty sweet, guys. Obviously, you've gotta do American Gothic with Tony & Chelsea so we can watch you do this whole process, but also while making it a self-portrait. 😂
I like I love Vermeer! What soft and lovely light he painted. The light was almost always daylight from a window on one side of the painting. Blue and Yellow, the idea of color valance and complementary colors was not introduced until the 18 century, good contrast pattern of balance of blue and yellow, reflection, and illusion!
Your daughter is a star, very patient and her face when you mention hot glueing the earring was a picture in its own right. It looked as if she believed your were going to glue it to her own ear. Great work as always
since you guys are sticklers for accuracy, I vote van gogh's self portrait sans ear. j/k, what was maddy's thoughts about all this, having to model for (what looked like) quite a while for her parents?
The great masters subjugated details to larger shapes. Looking for the overall shape of the head you can see how well the drawing takes into account the importance of the line separating the two scarfs. Also the line made up of the white collar brilliantly describes the cylindrical shape of the neck.
Great video. This kind of thing makes one appreciate even more the talent and hard work of the classics. The picture was beautiful, the work was hard for all. And with all due respect, Tony, both your wife and your daughter are beautiful too.
Ironically, in order to create his incredible paintings, it has been suggested that Vermeer used a 'camera' or at least as close to a camera as technology would allow in his day. I suggest that you look up a little documentary called 'Tim's Vermeer' . . . it is very interesting!
Absolute amazing. Well done! The resemblance is striking. And how challenging and difficult it is to create the lighting that matches the light Vermeer saw when he completed this masterpiece.
I hope you guys had a chance to see the movie. It is my all-time favorite film!! Goes to show you that even with this challenge the movie would blow your mind by the end.
You could try to spray a little hairspray on the earring to make the reflections slightly matte finished so that you get the same reflections of the lighting that you are looking for, but also keep some of the unwanted details like people and studio from being seen.
I like everything you guys put on RUclips, but I particularly like this style of knowledge sharing from beginning to end and bts.... you all did a great job.!!! And i really like Vermeer so it’s nice to see some of his work get shared.
This effort of having to replicate all the tiny details makes me appreciate the original ever more. It was a beautiful and ephemeral work, and you obviously have to be nitpicking to get as close to it as possible. All said, the end result is quite good!
Great work, but you overlooked one massive opportunity. While looking at this video I was thinking in addition to getting the shot what else could you do with the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Different pose? Different location? And then I saw it. You actually have it in the video! The Girl with a Pearl Earring... on Her Phone!!! Same setup, a little wider and have her looking down using her phone.
Wow! This was really interesting. The early attempts, where you got the lighting mostly right but Chelsea still looked like Chelsea, made it clear to me how hard this all was. For the future, Rembrandt would be an obvious choice. There you could start by trying to infer the lighting in his studio, then introduce a particular subject. Edward Hopper or John Singer Sargent would be fun.
I loved this! Her name was Griet. She worked as a maid, to support her family, in the house of master painter Johannes Vermeer in 1665 Delft, Holland where it was commissioned for Johannes to paint Griet. The result was one of the greatest paintings ever created.
Brilliant work. Of course, it helps to have such a great model. I wonder if spraying the earring with matte spray would have tamed the reflection problems somewhat. Do you have any plans to more closely match the contrast ratio, or mottle the jacket, or weather the surface? Spectacular job.
And to think, Jan Vermeer wasn't generally appreciated for the genius he was, in his lifetime. He struggled to sell paintings to support his large family. Great little video, thanks.
Great job on “The Girl With A Pearl Erring” painting. I like the detail that Tony has gone into with the earring to make it so good. Anyway nice job of making your daughter into a “classic” girl from history. The filming of Chelsea at the end is rather good too. Cheers
You guys did a great job. I would have taken it to the next step and tried too match the paint brush texture. But I’m sure you thought about doing that, but wanted it to look like a photo.
The first big assignment at the Berlin film University for camera and setbuilding, costume and makeup is to accurately recreate a painting. They have all the recourses one could need but still it looks far easier than it is, as many paintings have light in different parts of the image coming from different sources without explanation.
WOW! your best art project since you started this channel. The girl should have looked to the left though it's a key element of the psychological impression of the painting, conveying shyness and weakness.
Hi Tony & Chelsea - I was wondering, what's a great way to go about compiling a choice selection of images (including sensible quantity) for a professional photography portfolio - AND - how might you both individually suggest ways to make a portfolio stand out (not by the images as that's very subjective, but instead by means of its features, design, elements etc)? I'd love to know your thoughts. Lastly, your thoughts on whether to use individual prints or books or transparencies with a lightbox or a slide-show and possibly also an additional website.
What impresses me is the subtle details that Vermeer baked into his painting that made it so impressionable and the challenge of doing so in the 'real world'. Details I hadn't previously appreciated. He was simply using a camera. A XVII century model ;)
Your daughter is so patient! Great Job!
The Last Supper BUT every person is TONY! hahaha
You get me images of Tony's face from the side and in similar angles to the Last Supper and I think I can do it. Not very well of course but I think it can be done.
I made a quick example: i.ibb.co/zSfZkJz/spl-tony-northrup-the-last-supper.jpg
Dogs playing poker, but every dog is Pixel.
@@jackkraken3888 Haha!
Surely we need Jared as Jesus and Ken Wheeler as Judas.
Your daughter is very patient, looks like she's earned her pocket money bonus. 😁
I think Maddy gets MVP for sitting so still while I tucked, hot glued, and scrunched her into her outfit 💕
This is really cool. Artists are so fascinated with this painting because of Vermeer's ability to capture light in such a wide tonal gradient. Nice work. Will be watching this again.
Fantastic! I love seeing the behind the scenes work and effort that goes into making a great image. Thanks for sharing.

your model needs to be paid!
I'm sure she's getting; room and board, plus an education.
@@SteveMillerhuntingforfood That's how the NCAA justifies slavery while they make billions off the athletes, the American way.
I agree. I hope they paid her well for her time... Seems like it took quite a while.

I really loved this. What a challenge. You certainly were very successful in recreating the painting. Well done to Madelyn for all her patience.
I really appreciate this the behind-the-scenes look at how you created the portrait. That is a lot of skill and talent and patience at work.
The thing I loved about this video is it show cases how wether your replicate or try to get an image that you see in your head. this is a gem of a video. she really has very similar features. Great job on lighting as well.
Its so important to show the work. Too many people think "I can do that" if they only had your equipment.
The Scream by Edvard Munch try doing that one! Great video by the way.
I was thinking of The Scream too, but in a sarcastic way. Then I thought why not? The interpretation could be really interesting.
I was just about to write the same thing :-)
Brilliant idea and incredible execution!
This is pretty sweet, guys. Obviously, you've gotta do American Gothic with Tony & Chelsea so we can watch you do this whole process, but also while making it a self-portrait. 😂
That was one of your most gratifying videos. Just so cool. Obviously it took a lot of work but totally worth it for such a great result.
This was so cool, crazy how she looks identical to the girl in the photo, you guys did a great job with this.
Kudos to Madelyn's patience! Ok, so next: The Mona Lisa? :0)

Builds character!
pretty cool idea - I always look to art for inspiration, whether it be paintings or stills from movies and such
This is fantastic. I had a "wow" reaction from when you first posted it, but it's nice to see all the work that went into it.
Impressive levels of dedication to art!
my teacher sent me here. Yall did a great job!!!

Wonderful painting, I'm from Delft, the city where Vermeer lived, and a lot of his paintings are awesome
What a great video and so amazing result. Very inspiring.
This is fantastic!! Super interesting, and well done guys. Love the final product and cheers for your very patient model. Great content, as usual.

Chelsea, you are so right about Maddie's similarity to the original model. loved this video.
Nothing short of amazing. Good job guys!
Beautiful idea and so much work to accomplish it! Wold love to see another!
Whenever I see this painting (the original) in The Mauritshuis in The Hague, I marvel at how small it is. It's a treasure.
I hope you guys had a chance to see the movie. It is my all-time favorite film!! Goes to show you that even with this challenge the movie would blow your mind by the end.
Wow! Great project. The eye reflection looks absolutely perfect!
That was fantastic. Really enjoyed seeing the process and thinking behind the creation.
That was really cool. A lot of details that most would not notice.

A lot of hard work goes into a shot. Love seeing the breakdown.

Such a great project. That was a lot of fun to watch. For your next project, do the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The Orphan Girl at the Cemetery by Delacroix is one of my favorites that I would like to see in real life..... GREAT JOB btw!!!
That was interesting and well done and the end result was great, neat project.

Lovely excercise. Congrats.
Wow awesome work! You should definitely make this into a series. I'd suggest Chelsea as Mona Lisa.
Great attention to detail.
