Large trees that are too close to a concrete slab foundation can withdraw hundreds of gallons of water daily from areas around the home's foundation. This will accelerate the loss of moisture around the perimeter of the foundation.
This process, combined with hot, dry summers and clay soils, will result in the shrinkage of the clay soils. The clay soils will literally shrink in volume and gaps will appear between the bottom of the concrete foundation and the soil. When this happens, there is literally nothing supporting that portion of the foundation.
When the area of soil shrinkage becomes too large the weight of the home and its foundation will crack and break the concrete slab and it will collapse until it reaches something to support it - which is the shrunken soil.
Perhaps the best way to keep the tree and protect the foundation from excessive water loss is to install a root barricade or root barrier. This thick plastic will prevent tree roots from growing around and under the concrete slab foundation and hopefully eliminate the need for foundation repair in the future.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, you can purchase these plastic barriers at the larger home builder or home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's.
