Catch and Cook Sea Robin | Taste Test

  • On this episode of fishing taste test I set out to target a sea robin. This is a fish I have often read about as being good to eat but I wanted to see for myself. This ended up being a fun taste test challenge. I also did some inshore sight fishing for trout, redfish, and flounder. The fishing challenge for the day was to catch an inshore slam.

I started fishing when I was 4 (1973) for Scup (porgies), and one of the by-catches was sea robin. We used to fillet the meat off the tails, clean out the guts, and toss the carcasses and into a pot to make a fish broth.

I wish we could get this fish in stores here in Texas.
I lived in New Zealand for a while and experimented with every fish that came through our grocery store seafood section. There they call it gurnard, but it was by far my favorite. (That's assuming that the sea robins in the US taste like the gurnard in NZ.)
I used to egg them and then cover them in panko crumbs with a little rice flour to make that stick. I then fried them in coconut oil. Just lightly salted them with unflavored popcorn salt afterwards and left them on paper towels to let any excess oil soak out. They were so good, and insofar as they are bottom feeders, I lost a lot of weight eating them.
    Nice video.

We harvest the robins all day up in New York when we are fluke fishing. Most people see them as a nuisance but they are mighty tasty. Oyster toads taste amazing too. Kind of like shellfish because that's what they eat.
Keep up the good work I enjoy the videos a lot.

I live in NJ and have been eating them for years. I was surf fishing years ago and caught one that was 21 inches and 4 lbs. They get bigger than people realize. You can eat bergalls (cunner) too. Taste just like blackfish (tautog).

Hey that's a good looking SeaRobin. They are not ugly. I'm not surprised that they are good. Haven't eaten one but that's because all the ones I've caught have been pretty small. Also used to seeing them in the Aquarium Trade. I'd have a hard time eating things I sold for Fish tanks... sounds silly but kinda like eating cats..
