Have a look at this package: github.com/santigarcor/laratrust/
It's based on entrust, but is being actively maintained and is compatible with L5.3.

I would not recommend using entrust as it is incompatible with Laravel 5.3. The documentation for Laratrust should be enough to get you started: laratrust.readthedocs.io/en/3.0/index.html
