Yeah, I thought this was a really good format actually. It lets us think back to what it's like watching the show for the first time, and your commentary is very perceptive and insightful. I like the contrast of the natural discussion style here, versus the polished deep dive analyses of the main ASX vids. Devs is the perfect candidate for it too, because the first time around, everyone's going to have a different reaction, different interpretations of what's going on. At the time I got a lot out of discussing it with my mum, and am now getting a lot out of hearing your commentary. And Devs is something that will always have a different context when you rewatch it, you can't recapture what it was like to see for the first time, so getting thoughts recorded right here means a lot.
I hope to see you continue to make videos for the rest of the series. I’ve seen the whole series already but I think I’ve had just the right amount of time away from the finale to finally come back and see the series with both my perspective of knowing how things play out as well as your fresh perspective. Your analysis is exceptional (as always) and it is interesting to see you speculate and hypothesize on things that may or may not pan out in future episodes. I can’t wait to hear your take on the finale.
Hey Schwift, thanks for taking the time and making this impression I am eagerly looking forward to future videos of this series and I hope that you've guided more people to give this show a go!
Fantastic work. This editing style is great; I could see a style like this maximizing your time spent with the content and minimizing the time drain of video editing.
Love this informal format for this video. I would be very happy if you continued to do the other DEVS episodes in this style. It's a great format for this deep subject matter.
So glad you're looking at this series! It's beautiful in a way and certainly an interesting contrast to the last season of Westworld. But if it wasn't clear by the end of this episode, it's pronounced "ah-MY-ah" not "ah-may-ah"
Yeah, this was great and I hadn’t even watched the show. It was fun having you talk while I did morning kitchen stuff. Maybe I’ll watch the show and I will definitely tune in to more of your videos about it. I’m in agreement with others about your more informal style in these types of videos. You’re funnier when you’re figuring it out on the fly. This style is similar to the post-show livestreams where there’s opportunities to go on funny rants and riffs. Cheers.
Really liked this show. I really fell in love with the soundtrack. It took me awhile to place it, but it reminds me of the soundtrack to the Clooney version of Solaris.
I honestly want papa shifty to write a book, like his own fantasy series. It'd be very interesting with all his knowledge of this symbolic, structural world building stuff.
I thought the reason for the freak out puking was pretty clear: Hes analyzing the code and has sudden realization of what it all means- and the implications are so profound it places him in a state of shock and disgust.
I really enjoyed DEVS, and, as always, I enjoy hearing your take on things. It got me excited about doing a re-watch. First impressions is a great way to dip your (and our) toes in the water without a huge investment. Thanks!
This was an awesome video. I can't remember what show it was, but you did a similar thing like this for a different show, and I really liked that too. Keep doing them!
I just couldn't help but think about the floating vacuum cube room. how do they get fresh air and electricity in? and where do the toilets go? I'm probably overthinking this and it sure looks cool. Great vid Schwift.
Sweet, i just watched devs after you recommend it in one of the westworld livestreams. Happy to see it being reviewed (also watching Dark and loved it so far :) )
By the way, the cube is called "Menger sponge", a is a three-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Cantor set and two-dimensional Sierpinski carpet.
Sergei vomits because he reads on the code in the future he will steal the code and he will die. That is why he was nervous. And that is why Katie said “No, changes nothing.” When the main character “I just feel” after her boyfriend dies, she was not really feeling she was acting on anger. Because a normal person would stay away after the boyfriend dies in weird way. These vertical “stones” and other ones were used when someone died and it is like a symbol for the place where someone got dead under the ground (old cemeteries). He could have just said “There are no cleaners so tidy up after yourself” just because there were no cleaners at the specific time. Does not mean they never hired cleaners for the place. But with technology I am sure they could hire a robot to do the cleaning.
id be interested in watching you make an analysis video like this one after watching a first episode, and then another analysis video when youre done watching the season with comparisons
I think Devs has been one of the most interesting things (and yeah, a bit pretentious, maybe) I've seen during quarantine. I'm enjoying this bit by bit a analysis, it works as a neat second watch, hope it'll continue for every episode
So cool vid. Do the rest. I heard they're doing a season two. So it's like good for Money or whatever the reason keeping you from talking about more shows. But for now let's focus on Devs. It's cool. Make ppl understand that
My takeaway from Sergei throwing up in the bathroom is in his realisation and understanding that there's no way to steal this information without Forrest knowing he would.
There's a fucking bathroom, complete with toilets and sinks _inside_ the floating cube with an unbroken vacuum seal all around it. Literally the only way that _could_ work is if the "elevator" thing somehow transfers water and sewage as needed across the barrier. Or maybe they recycle the liquid waste into waste for the sinks, and just pump out condensed waste, and occasionally top up the sinks and stuff? I feel like they didn't think this through. Put the bathroom on the outside of the vacuum seal...
Phenomenal video. My only issue was that the fast scrolling through video frames was a little jarring. I would’ve preferred if you let the clips play or paused them while you talked.
Could you slow frame transitions down slightly when there are subtitles? If i see text flash by too quickly i feel i missed something i was meant to read and always go back.
Between the visuals and the soundtrack, Devs reads to me as a spiritual successor to Utopia. Check of out if you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/rcx-nf3kH_M/видео.html
I disagree with what you say about hope in determinism. It is the complete opposite: if everything is determined then the only thing one can do is hope it turns out ok since you have no agency. If things aren't determined then hope has less relevance because you can make decisions and therefore don't need it (aside from hoping not to get hit by a stray meteor).
It's not very good. The beginning seemed promising with the kind of atmosphere that reminded me of the movie Primer as well as some references to real math and tech. However by episode 6 you'll need to be very drunk to bear the cringe of long and pretentious pseudo-philosophical pseudo-scientific discussions with an ad-hoc love triangle
"Experimental style" what is this??? Dont you have some other youtube channel that you can spam with unprofessional stuff like this? I thought this one was only for the meticulously researched and crafted videos
Fun fact, when I was a student UCSC the McHenry library was actually replaced with a giant baby statue for several months in 2018.
Replaced?

I recommend the AShX Game of Thrones abridged series for an even more natural discussion style ;)
I hope to see you continue to make videos for the rest of the series. Sweet vid glad to see your alive
Hey Schwift,
thanks for taking the time and making this impression
I am eagerly looking forward to future videos of this series and I hope that you've guided more people to give this show a go!
For a first impression, this got very deep. I kinda like the rawness and I hope to see a more in-depth analysis on the main channel. Very good work!
Fantastic work. This editing style is great; I could see a style like this maximizing your time spent with the content and minimizing the time drain of video editing.
The all-seeing AI in Westworld was literally just copying Psycho Pass. This is much more original.
Please do more episodes of this show. It's surprisingly deep.
I hope to see more of this format as well as more of Devs content from you. Thanks for all of your hard work over the years.
This was great. I love the style of the review and your analysis. Thanks for sharing. I hope it continues.
Love this informal format for this video. I would be very happy if you continued to do the other DEVS episodes in this style. It's a great format for this deep subject matter.

DEVS makes Westworld look like Teletubbies.
💯 this.
You should definitely make one of these for every episode now I really like this laid back style
Yeah, this was great and I hadn’t even watched the show. It was fun having you talk while I did morning kitchen stuff. Maybe I’ll watch the show and I will definitely tune in to more of your videos about it. I’m in agreement with others about your more informal style in these types of videos. So glad you finally started watching, this show is so amazing and I’m here for all your videos on it.
love these first impression videos
I wish we got more episodes of this from you
Dev literally means God in Hindi/Sanskrit.
Enjoyed the review. Watched full season and this helped me appreciate some of the subtler elements. Thanks.
Really liked this show. I really fell in love with the soundtrack. It took me awhile to place it, but it reminds me of the soundtrack to the Clooney version of Solaris.
Supercomputer as a word doesn't seem to do justice to the DEVS computer. I would describe it as a World Engine...
The super computer in "Devs" reminds me of the payload in "Sunshine" also written by Alex Garland
Love that film, thanks for info!
I would love this for every episode!!
I honestly want papa shifty to write a book, like his own fantasy series. It'd be very interesting with all his knowledge of this symbolic, structural world building stuff.
I thought the reason for the freak out puking was pretty clear:
Hes analyzing the code and has sudden realization of what it all means- and the implications are so profound it places him in a state of shock and disgust.
“And Sergei has died right at the start, just like Ned Stark.”
I think you mean *Sean Bean*
I really enjoyed DEVS, and, as always, I enjoy hearing your take on things. It got me excited about doing a re-watch. First impressions is a great way to dip your (and our) toes in the water without a huge investment. Thanks!
This was an awesome video. I can't remember what show it was, but you did a similar thing like this for a different show, and I really liked that too. Keep doing them!
Beautiful synopsis, thank you!
I prefer chipmunks to squirrels but I can be convinced I’m wrong
@Young Bootyman You hate regulation? Do you want another Chile?? Do you???
Got so excited to see this video in my email! Keep up the good work
I just couldn't help but think about the floating vacuum cube room. how do they get fresh air and electricity in? and where do the toilets go? I'm probably overthinking this and it sure looks cool. Great vid Schwift.
Do more of these! I love them
A point on quantum computers. They do actually look like that. That one looks a lot like IBM's quantum computer.
Honestly this video would fit the main channel well too
Sweet, i just watched devs after you recommend it in one of the westworld livestreams. Happy to see it being reviewed (also watching Dark and loved it so far :) )
Its basically an explained video dude and I for one love it. Keep it up
Thank God you're here. I need a ginger ale and a Schwift after that episode
By the way, the cube is called "Menger sponge", a is a three-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Cantor set and two-dimensional Sierpinski carpet.
Oh hell yeah, been waiting for this video! I really hope you like the show. Imo the season would be a great analysis video for your main channel!
More first impressions videos? Sure
But what I am actually invested in is more Devs videos.
Wow this looks soo good! Thanks for covering this Schwifty, Westworld looks like s**t compared to this!
10 outta 10. Love the freestyle feeling of this breakdown.
Sergei vomits because he reads on the code in the future he will steal the code and he will die. That is why he was nervous. Awesome video, thanks.
The music sounds like a clarinet playing jazz
I think it sounds more like a soprano sax
The Fibonacci sequence is also know as god's fingerprint. Figured that's probably the link with the game.
This was shot in UCSC lmao at mchenry library thats awesome. N lovin these first impression vids
id be interested in watching you make an analysis video like this one after watching a first episode, and then another analysis video when youre done watching the season with comparisons
Please do more of this.
I come back from time to time to see if more episodes have been talked about..... they haven’t...
I think Devs has been one of the most interesting things (and yeah, a bit pretentious, maybe) I've seen during quarantine.
I'm enjoying this bit by bit a analysis, it works as a neat second watch, hope it'll continue for every episode

God damnit! I was seriously looking forward to some good Peppa Pig action
My takeaway from Sergei throwing up in the bathroom is in his realisation and understanding that there's no way to steal this information without Forrest knowing he would.
Or that he concluded that they already knew he was about to steal it
I loved you in ‘House’.
keep it up, mostly curious what you think about the show as whole. I wasn't too thrilled with ending personally
Ending sucked
You know you now have to make one of these for every episode of the show right?
more of these pls
There's a fucking bathroom, complete with toilets and sinks _inside_ the floating cube with an unbroken vacuum seal all around it.
Literally the only way that _could_ work is if the "elevator" thing somehow transfers water and sewage as needed across the barrier. Or maybe they recycle the liquid waste into waste for the sinks, and just pump out condensed waste, and occasionally top up the sinks and stuff?

Phenomenal video. My only issue was that the fast scrolling through video frames was a little jarring. I would’ve preferred if you let the clips play or paused them while you talked.
Why aren’t you making more episodes of Dark?! You are the best!!
The good old game of hide the sausage, a typical German game.
Did they film this at UC Santa Cruz looks just like it.
MORE PLEASE
Cool stuff..
please more!
Could you slow frame transitions down slightly when there are subtitles? If i see text flash by too quickly i feel i missed something i was meant to read and always go back.
Pls pls pls pls pls do more of these schwifty
YES
Why does the Illuminati triangle keep blatantly showing up around the video?
illuminati psyop, hail Glycon
Was kinda hoping this would be something akin to Peppa Pig ngl
No one mentioned that Pete is Ser Hugh and the Lannister twins???
And then... And then... And then...
What happened to the rest pf the season?
Have you thought about doing a video on Upload? I really loved that show for some reason.
Thanks for reminding me of that show. I watched the first 2 episodes and wanted to come back to it later but forgot about it.
Please just do this for all the episodes Shwift
is it weird that I'd rather watch this than the actual show?
The idea of Determinism sounds to me like the simplification of life. And I do not believe the brain is that simple.
Alt I think Severance would be a great show to cover. But again you might be busy with stuff already and what do I know. Good vid nevertheless
Between the visuals and the soundtrack, Devs reads to me as a spiritual successor to Utopia.
Check of out if you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/rcx-nf3kH_M/видео.html
wait thats the RV from breaking bad 1:25
Please do a proper main channel breakdown once you've finished
The cube looks likes a Menger sponge/cube which a fractal construct. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menger_sponge
noice

X can play last of us 2 for the boys???
First episode is intriguing. Unfortunately the rest of the season is weak.
Such a boring show, couldn't finish the first episode. Great to see ASX do an explainer, hope he continues, cause it should be way more watchable.
God this show was slow
It's not very good. The beginning seemed promising with the kind of atmosphere that reminded me of the movie Primer as well as some references to real math and tech. However by episode 6 you'll need to be very drunk to bear the cringe of long and pretentious pseudo-philosophical pseudo-scientific discussions with an ad-hoc love triangle
1st
Protentious crap if you ask me. A lot of that recently, especially with Westworld.
Finally hes done with terrible ass westworld. If only he covered this show 2 months ago when it was still being aired.
"Experimental style" what is this??? Dont you have some other youtube channel that you can spam with unprofessional stuff like this? I thought this one was only for the meticulously researched and crafted videos
