As a proud Geordie this is hairs on the back of my neck. The song is called Going Home. There is a version by Hank Marvin with Mark on RUclips which is worth finding.
I've watched the Dire Straits ' Alchemy ' version of this hundreds of times over the years . It's good to hear Sam bringing this song to a whole new generation of fans .
Wow I loved that, gets me all emotional and teared up when I hear that song 🤣😂🤣🙄 like as if it's the national anthem of the northeast , the once great kingdom of northumbria
I'm a blue Scouser, getting on a bit now but always loved the passion of newcastle.dire straits and Mark knopfler were always musical heroes of mine and I must say even though I have only recently became aware of Sam,I missed his first album,I can tell him and his great and tight band have got lots of years of belting albums in them. Good luck Sam and the fenders.👌👍👊
@@Stephentoutdoors He sounds contemporary but you can definitely hear his influencers.and what's best is the whole band are on that same page,I will have to get to see him and hopefully at a smallish gig.dont really enjoy too large gigs as much as I did in my younger years.🙌
@@acsljones his band is just his mates from his childhood , I think that is brilliant like , im not a Springsteen fan but you can tell Sam is influenced by him , I hope I get to see him again soon, I missed out on his newcastle gig next month, shame like
Not a bad influence, the "boss" has grown on me through the years .suppose it's his honesty in song writing is what iv come to realise. Songwriters have got to mean it🤔
Hes an Incredible Talent, there must be something in the water in Newcastle,Brian Johnson,Mark Knopfler,Lindisfarne,Jimmy Nail,Venom,Raven,Hank Marvin,Bryan Ferry,Cheryl Cole and now Sam Fender, the list goes on,an amazing City full of talent.
Hey steve, best thing about this song is the mighty toon walking out in style, also it was played at bren's funeral down concord in the front street on the bagpipes then again at birtley crem, brings all memories back with the toon winning all them games when keegan was coach, now eddie howe, plus brens funeral lets hope we can win something under eddie howe for ourselves and for bren mate
It was written by Mark knopfler who grew up in blyth Northumberland and he has often associated the song to the North East even though it was done for a Scottish film or sumit , knopfler is a huge newcastle supporter
@@Stephentoutdoors yeah I knew it was written by him I didn’t know he grew up there. I think he was born in Glasgow but that makes sense. It’s nice to see such a great piece of music used out with the film
@@Stephentoutdoors His mother was a Geordie, but his father was Scottish, actually a bagpiper. Think was him who Skipinnish in Scotland played Piper to the end which was written by him
How is it that no one has written some words for this fantastic piece of music, something that the crowd can sing instead of standing around wondering how to respond?
@@Stephentoutdoors yeah, i could sort of hear them humming. Its the same at Newcastle games, the song comes on just before kick off.....& the fans just sort of just listen to it (not wanting to spoil it I guess). Not exactly rousing if you know what i mean? As a pre match war cry...it doesn't have the same effect as YNWA or the All blacks Haka does it? 50,000 fanatic Geordies.....humming. But, it obviously wasn't written as a pre match motivation song & it is one of my all time favourites.
Think there should be a song we could sing before games like what you said YNWA or blowing bubbles(westham) or that god awful mull of kintyre(forest) really don't get that 1 haha , maybe we could sing let's get ready to rumble for our own geordies ant n dec 🤣🤣 maybe the blaydon races right on kick off
I was there... I had goosebumps and shed a little tear of joy when this kicked in ⚫⚪⚫⚪
Imagine how knopfler must feel to see this in another generation.
That's only natural
We are united
Nice
Sam is wise beyond his years and has great taste in music.
Hes a breath of fresh right now , was in his local pub last week, saw his first brit award on the bar, was amazing seeing it
Oh he's amazing is Sam bless him!
Local Hero has been one of my favorite instrumentals since the movie came out. Now I know it can only be performed as one, massive communal hum.
wow cmon magpies, proud to be NUFC fans since child, greetings from Indonesia :)
In a little while, SAM will be a GLOBAL HERO. GOD BLESS YOU SAM - SING your TRUTH - NOW and FOREVER
Just one word......GOOSEBUMPS!
Definitely mate . Still buzzing
I will never not get goosebumps and and a bit teary eyed hearing this song. Timeless.
Even though I'm irish seeing scenes like this after 2 years of dreadful lockdowns is quite something else
Ah yeah definitely, even if I wasn't a local lad myself I would've still had the goosebumps, loved it
I was totally emotional and super proud! Helluva way to open a show! Fantastic! #geordiepride 🖤⚽️
I'm a geordie living in Leeds and this makes me feel homesick 😥
Absolutely amazing scenes the good times are coming for Newcastle United
Wish he’d open every show with local hero such an unreal atmosphere

Yeah it was amazing, makes a change from hearing it at St james' Park every other week ha
As a Dubliner who has been to Newcastle sixteen times over the years, the one emotion l feel every time l am there is Jealousy.
Getting learning the song words Daniel, I hear this guy's songs are being played at St James Park.
Im playing a gig soon and its on the Set list! Doing Seventeen goin under right after local hero.
Great. This man is mighty. Best music and performer I've heard in a long time.

OMG this must have been so emotional for everyone watching this.
Proper goosebump moment when I heard local hero being played specially being a newcastle fan too
Cant say I find it the best intro song for a football club but in fairness Newcastle own it themselves which cant be said for other clubs.
fantastic

I can't believe the Newcastle fans did not pen words to this instrumental. There is still time!
Can't improve on perfection
Words can't describe the passion we have. ⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️
I hope he does this in Scotland as we brilliant even if i do have a soft spor for Sunderland
That song has nothing to do with sunderland . Shame on you having a soft spot for them 🤣

The Newcastle West End flag at the baack from 1882-1892 when they financially collapsed then the East End formed United
fucking incredible, brought tears to my eyes
Once a Geordie always a Geordie no matter where you may roam.. Toon Toon from Western Australia
Imagine being from anywhere else on the planet man.
I couldn’t. I’d happily die on the Tyne.
