  • A glance into the late 1960's counterculture being received, and challenged, by the traditional American at that time.
    From the film can:
"PAUL KRASSNER is Editor of The Realist, an avant-garde newspaper
that regularly uses profanity, and editorially supports the use of
marijuana, illegal abortions, the privilege to speak filth; it
contains cartoons which Pyne describes as disrespectfully irreligious."

I've emailed Paul Krassner a few times and he always replied. He's a really cool and exceptionally intelligent guy.

He passed away on July 21st this year. He was 87 years old. I was probably on of the few Black people who read his work.

For those wondering whatever happened to the original 2'' inch tapes of this show:
Most, if not all of them, still exist. Hartwest in New York owns them. They have about 120 90-minute episodes. Some (but not all of them) have three 30-minute interviews in each of them.
They also have over 100 additional 2'' inch tapes, but it is unclear if they are for episodes that were not in the catalog, or whether they are separate segments that were edited into the program.
    Two shows have been digitized.

I watched the Joe Pyne Show when I was sixteen and either a sophomore or junior attending high school in St. Louis County, Mo. I am not certain, but the show must have aired late Saturday/early Sunday. (When else?) In any event clearly remember seeing Joe Pyne interview Paul Krassner, whom I was vaguely aware of as the editor of an some bizarre"Underground Magazine," "the Realist." Joe was relentlessly ragging on Krasner about everything.
I particularly recall him ragging at Krassner for headlining an article, "The Brand of Deodorant LBJ Uses." Pyne felt this dissed the dignity, not so much of LBJ, but of the Oval Office." Paul calmly cited the First Amendment, Freedom of the Press, The President as Public Property and the Public's Right to Know,
Joe wasn't too impressed with any of this "sort of "Four-letter Filth" that filled (Paul's) Commie Rag, '
About thirteen years later, a year or so after moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, I met a woman a few years my elder who knew and was still friends with Krassner. I mentioned seeing Paul being interviewed on the Joe Pyne Show. She laughed and said she'd had met him a year or so after the show aired. Shortly thereafter, they discussed his appearance. Krassner himself laughed that everyone he meets tells him they saw the show. He added that he had dropped LSD for the interview and just let it flow.

They cut out the best parts. ""In 1967 he introduced Paul Krassner as “the publisher of The Realist, a filthy, avant-garde, left-wing rag.” Fifty years later, Krassner recalls thinking, Well, I don’t know about “rag....”
“Why do you print the most obscene words?” Pyne demanded. “Do you edit your magazine because you were an unwanted child?”
    “No, Daddy.”
Their talk went downhill from there. “He asked me about my acne scars,” says Krassner, now 85. “That was a low blow. I said, ‘Let me ask you something: Do you take off your wooden leg before you make love to your wife?’ And his jaw dropped.” According to Krassner, the audience gasped while Pyne’s producers “averted their eyes and the atmosphere became surrealistic.” Krassner laughed all the way home. If this was the worst the establishment could do, maybe the revolution was coming after all."

Have read a lot of Krassner, but had never heard him speak. Figured he'd sound something like Abbie Hoffman, who I have heard. That is, brazen, sharp-tongued, quick-witted, humorous. I was somewhat taken aback at Krassner's timid, whiny, but most of all humorless demeanor.

Pyne would attack him however he acted. Best not to take the bait of such a petty and foolish man.Resigned indifference would seem to be an appropriate response here.

What would be the point - you could never out-insult Pyne so don't even bother trying. Besides, I find it totally disgusting that the paper swears so much. There is no defense of that. None.

This is very mild for Pyne who regularly insulted guests. My guess is he got people on who were controversial just so he could insult them. However, Pyne got ratings.
