    Hey Eric, thanks for reviewing my head. I'm interested in where 440 Source was getting their claim of 320 cfm at .600" lift. I clearly trust your flow numbers more, though. They didn't post a flow sheet. This makes me glad that I'm just building a 400" street machine with a little shot of nitrous. I will be swapping out all of the valve springs and such to match a roller cam with .592" lift, hence why it just came with the weak springs and 7 degree locks and retainers. I'll be putting a back cut on them and most smooth out that rough transition you were talking about. The port entry is weird, and I'll make sure to fix that as well when I port match my intake.
    By the way, the heads are a Chinese casting. As cast, they are the cheapest big block Mopar head available. I simply bought them because I wanted an aluminum head, but wanted a stock look.

      Modern Cylinder Head in Michigan was porting these for 440Source. Last I knew, Souce had a falling with them and aren't using them anymore. I sent my as-cast Stealths to them and had them ported. They work well for a street engine and produce an easy 600 hp with a very mild hydraulic roller. It's a fun street car that we race on weekends. 7,000 miles and hundreds of passes later and zero issues.

      Poke I would seriously consider replacing the valves, locks and retainers.
      Seen lots of them fail 😥

      I'm definitely going to go through and do some magic work to them. I do have access to an entire cylinder head shop that I'll be buying eventually, so Ill use that to my advantage.

    Have these heads on my 505 stroker, put 10 degree locks and proper springs for my cam. Will do 7000, 4.56 diff. Still working on the tune, doing 12.2 on 1/4 in my truck. Plenty of torque, destroyed my drive shaft. So quite pleased with these heads out of the box.

    I watched engine masters test a set of stock 906 vs 440 , Edelbrock then Trick flow. 440 source made 20 over stock. Edelbrock made more than the 440 source. The trick flow made 20 over the Edelbrock. Engine masters stated the would definitely use the 440 source heads over 906 heads for improvement and weight savings. But all out performance Trick flow.

      The edelbrocks typically make around 60hp over stock 906 heads .

    The 440 Source heads are cast in China. They are meant to be a stock appearing factory replacement type head that takes all stock style components but cast out of aluminum. A set of the base model as cast 440 Source Stealth heads are about a grand for two assembled heads.

      @@JT-ko3rv because it is a vital part of any carbureted engine. Every car had it from the factory as standard equipment for a reason. You can't reliable run a carbed engine without one. Btw, 63 years and 370k troublefree miles on mine, still going strong. Drive it since 1988 almost daily. W/O a heat crossover, it would'nt have lasted that long. And i DRIVE it. Still goes easily 150+ mph with a basically untouched engine.

Not alot of stock type big block mopar daily drivers in sub zero Temps on the road these days looking for a performance aluminum head with exhaust crossover to go with their oddball matching intake 🤣 😂

    1967 *915 chamber I think you mean.
    1968 906 and onwards to end of production are the slightly less desirable open chamber. 906 heads are basically the same as 915 except for the open chamber.

    1) Dig into the basics of how we flow test cylinder heads. Using @DavidVizard s IOP program we enter as much info as we can get about the runners to be flowed. We CC the ports and combustion chamber to get the port Volumes, Measure the length of the port all before we begin testing on the #Superflow flowbench. Once completed we use DV's IOP to then determine what needs to be done to the port.
    2) The importance of the ports CD (discharge co-efficient) or, to put it into plain language, the ports flow efficiency. You can have a port work at 112% efficiency. FACT. Pressure recovery. Discharge co-efficient is just as important as cfm.
    3) Port fill to find hidden power. You can get a much more 'power friendly' intake port by filling the 'lazy' parts of the intake port and cutting the 'excessively busy' areas. The results will be more flow, port velocity, port energy, and port energy density. Just so you know, this all adds up to more power and torque - as well as a wider rpm range!

    There is a good engine masters where they test these and then I think Edelbrock RPMS and then the Trckflow 240cc cnc heads. The 440 source made the last power then the RPM and then the Trickflow. These I think are at a real nice price though and they fit the factory look really well. Nice stock replacement improvement. The trickflow and I am quite sure the Edelbrock RPM have closed chamber. Also the RPM and Trickflow have angle plugs to make it a lot easier around the headers. These have straight plugs. Awesome to see some Mopar on here!!

    Nice!! A Mopar video. I have a 440 sitting in the garage that I'm considering building for my Duster. Or may just stick to the small block for less weight. I'd go with the Trick Flow heads though for either small or big block.

      The RB (440) doesn't weigh much more than the small block if you put aluminum heads, intake, water pump and housing,or better yet a 400 with All the aluminum goodies and a 452 stroker kit

    Good honest review! (Didn’t expect anything else) I imagine those heads would be decent on an old school street engine, might support 500-600 hp, even. With 440 cu in (and the right cam, etc) the torque curve should be good for a nice driver. Probably not going to win many drag races against a modern setup, though. Makes me remember my ‘68 Road Runner 383-cam, headers, intake, 3-bbl Holley (there was such a thing once!), no posi, no traction, but pulled way stronger than stock. Clocked 13.9 @ 102, I know miserable, but fun. Thanks, Eric!

      I bet that roadrunnwr was spinning its ads off too I bet if it had some slicks and a posi, spool, welded spider gears etc it would've turned a much better e.t. if say probably by a second or more, I wasnt thete and don't know how much/how far it spun and how much you had to feather the throttle, I'm just going by what ive seen/heard of others running with a b body with a 383 with cam, intake/carb, headers, gears/locked diff, slicks and proper tuning..

      @@bigblockjalopy they can support 500hp.. They say that the standard versions will make 550hp when used with one of their stroker kits, but I would think the same cluld be said about a nicely built 440 at the right rpm.. I mean hell iron heads on the right engine setup can make 500hp with work done to them (2.14/1.81 valves, cut valves, porting etc)

      @@chriswest5360 The old Roadrunner had NO traction. Even with 3.23s the tires spun, required very much throttle feathering. Limited slip would’ve helped but the Polyglass tires of the day were pretty useless.

    Years ago on ramcharger central they said these were based off of a ported 906. I think even 440 source said these heads were designed to be a "stealth" head upgrade.

    Thanks for doing these. Would like to see the other head flow numbers you mentioned for comparison, Edelbrocks etc. Hopefully you can test a Trickflow 240 sometime?

    This head really not to be a race head, it is a huge difference in stock cast iron head , will flow much better that 906/452 head,
    The cost of doing old heads is almost cost prohibited nowadays.

    These need to be flowed on a minimum 4.320 bore.. thats factory spec. Most overbore at least .030 when doing a rebuild. So a 4.350 bore would probably be most appropriate. Thanks for the info Eric, but these need to be flowed on a larger bore for a fair test.

      A 383 is 4.250" the 4.310" was a compromise between the two I guess.

      4.310 is close enough, .005” wouldn’t be enough to shroud the valve, this is a fair test.
      If you aren’t sure what .005” looks like you can put 2 pieces of paper together…it’s thinner than that.

    These heads are for street use, they provide decent power increases over 906 heads. The chamber on these heads are nothing like a 906 head. Don’t feel sorry for us Mopar guys, we have B1 heads and other’s for all out racing!

    You was real nice about what you was looking at Eric . I truly almost feel bad for these Dodge boys . Seems to me the B1 is what should be purchased as they are the best they got . I believe id buy pails full of epoxy to shrink down those Brodix to something i could use . But even the rest of the RB and B too have bad oiling & rpm issues . Jeez i dont know why they stay loyal to them .

    A set of heads brand new for $1000. I think that’s pretty good value for what these are. On engine masters on the 440 with headers, intake, 850 Holley and a 235/241@0.050 lift hydraulic roller cam this head made 519 ftlbs and 481 hp.

      These are the CNC'd version.. these are $2000. The ones on engine masters were the cheap as cast versions.

      @@chriswcislo8881 Exactly.. purely performance yes the Trickflows are the way to go. But, these cater to the guy who wants to maintain the original look of the engine, while reaping the rewards of an aluminum head that flows significantly more than a factory casting.

      @port nut they were designed for a 350 cube engine in 58 when the big block came out lol they weren't changed a whole lot by 78 end of production when it mattered they used the max wedge and then hemi big difference 😉

    The 440 Source head was made as a low cost aluminum replacement for a stock factory head in every way. Outward appearance and chamber etc. However, the port is a different matter...wish they had gotten that right, but again, this was and is a low cost aluminum head for the budget minded BBC owner. BBC=Big Block Chrysler. LOL

    So much better than 906/452 head imo, those flow sb numbers these are an improvement not the greatest but better than sinking money in boat anchor cast iron.

    I wanted to mention that in the video you used a 4.310 bore fixture but a standard bore 440 is 4.320 and 4.350 when it's. 030 over you've mentioned on other videos flowing on to small of a bore fixture does make a difference on the results. In this case with these heads do you think it made a difference

    A 400 has a 4.34 bore, and many available pistons for that are 4.36 and 4.375. But a 383 is 4.25, so .060 over is 4.31. These would be good heads for a 383, which is what I have. And 906/452 heads have totally open chambers, no quench at all.

    I believe the 906 castings are a full open chamber. They have a quench pad but it recessed up in the chamber, not surface level with the deck of the head. Those chambers resemble the chambers on my old FE stuff? And FE's are from a 1950's design. The flow numbers you showed are comparable to my D3VE-A2A smog era 460 heads. Lol! Not good! I did do work to them but still that aftermarket head should put my smog 460 heads to shame! I think on the intake side my 460 heads flowed a good bit better than those 440 heads, exhoust side the 440 heads were better than my 460 heads. Good video brother, I like this kind of info!

      the 440 source,eddy performer rpm, trick flow 240, all achieve their flow numbers with a much smaller port than your 460 heads. that creates high velocity resulting in a very strong and flat torque curve. that is extremely desireable in a street car . giant ports on the other hand, require stiff rear gears to work right on the street unless running like 500 cubes or more. this is the reason chrysler 440s,and buick 455s were killers on the street back in the day, and they defeated many street hemis and chevy big blocks with giant intake ports.

      @@danielslocum7169 yes, I agree with that statement. I just thought it being a aftermarket head it would show better numbers.. Off the top of my head I don't remember the numbers it showed? But on the intake side of my smog era 460 head I got 305 cfm. That is with alil work from me however that was the first set of heads I ever ported & I know there are guys that get a bit better than that yet on them. Course the intake side of them heads has never been the complaint of people, its the exhiust side that really robs them of having much glory.

      @@jesseduke694 sounds like your porting job was pretty good. yes ford had the same poor exhaust port issue on the otherwise excellent 351 cleveland heads.
      everybodys big -port big block heads can make big horsepower north of 600.problem is though,that without steep gearing or big cubic inches.....velocity through those giant ports will be slow below about 3500 rpm,killing torque where a street car really needs it. but put 4.30 or 4.56 gears behind a 426 hemi,454 chevy,or 460 ford engine and you can mop the floor with just about everything else! stock 440 heads only flow about 235-240 @.600. stealths and edelbrock rpm heads flow about 285 @ .600. thats a very good improvement, and velocity is still very high. indy ,eddy victor,and trick flow 270 heads all have big max wedge sized ports and flow over 320 cfm making the 440 a match for other giant port big blocks, however the gen 2 hemi is still king.

    Another thing worth mentioning about those heads is the valve guides are junk. I bought a set back in 2015 when they had about 6000 miles a few of the valves had about .050 lateral movement when the valve was at .400 lift

    I bought an 'as cast' set of these back in about '07 or '08.
    I believe mine were cast in China.
    After I went to put the manifold on, found the intake ports were all core shifted to one side
    The chamber is not a copy of the 906; that was an even worse thing, imagine if there was a .150" thick head gasket stuck on there... yeah, even worse.
    As far as moving air, well... they don't. Legend has it that they are pretty much a copy of the Edelbrock head with the outside made to look like a stock casting, and the Eddy was basically an 'as cast' bolt on deal that replicates a ported set of 915/906/452 heads without the abysmal smog head open chambers.
    And the stock MoPar heads were sad compared to the BBF & BBC castings. That's why the mopars were always touted as torque engines, the cylinder heads didn't breathe enough for us to make horsepower as easy as Fords and Chevys
    FWIW, as far as paying someone to do work on your vehicle, around the shop, etc... Do you mail your own flour to make bread? Do you harvest latex from rubber trees and make your own tires? Or even mount and balance the ones you buy? Of course not. Division of labor is one of the things that makes society. Without it, we would all be hunter-gatherers.
    So, I say roll with it. Pay a guy to swap transmissions in your truck, or mow your lawn, there's no shame in it. There's only 24 hours in a day, how do you want to spend them?

    Dude, they aren't a "NEW high performance casting"... these heads are meant to be a low-buck replacement option for stock heads. They took the casting from a 2406518 and chucked bigger valves in. Why change anything else? The way these are set up means anyone can bolt these on with factory parts and have zero issues. These are an incredible upgrade to ANY of the old iron heads and cheaper than the trash eddy heads.

    On Engine Masters S6 E95 The Wedge Head Shootout!! They test 440 Wedge heads. Refreshed stock 906 cast iron heads, base model as cast 440 Source Stealth heads, base model Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, and CNC ported Trick Flow 240 heads with bigger intake valves. Basically about a 20 HP gain as you stepped up in heads and price. Refreshed stock, as cast 440 Source, as cast Edelbrock Performer RPM, CNC Trick Flow 240.

    I bought the 440 stealth heads, they are on a 4.375 bore. The head work was done in Troy, Mi. by Jim T. He has 50 years or more EXP. The heads were bare casting. I bought the s/s valves from ( Mancini racing) J T. Did all the work in the Bowl, and match porting and the valve pockets, of coarse valve work. He showed me all the work that was done in valve area.

    My engine guy said not to touch these heads , they are junk. He’d rather throw a set of 906 heads on my RB.. I ended up going with E Street from Edelbrock. Please go over more mopar heads. Eddys and Trick Flow etc.

    Hey Eric,
    Tim here (Dr Poncho bracket guy)........i'm not a MOPAR guy, but WHY, WHY wud you use a '68 (or so) chamber on a modern head???
    Altho there are small issues with my Kauffman Racing Poncho heads, they DO have todays modern heart shapped chamber.....i went from 36° of timing to 31°.....HUGE advantage..... allows my pump gas to work well....(fast burn dont allow the pressure pulse to be long enuf to use the momentum) but, the old style chamber dont allow the "fast burn" pump gas to do ANY work at all......always bugged me that Edelbrock has used the '69 chamber for their Pontiac RPM series head.....i bought my Kauffmans with the modern chamber for a reason!!.....yrs later, Edelbrock now has a modern chamber (heart shaped) on their D-port Pontiac......they were slow to see....my Kauffmans kick ass cuz they're smartly engineered!!........WHY, WHY wud this MOPAR head use an out-dated chamber!!!.....feel bad for the MOPAR folks!!....BOY i dig ur channel!!!.....now that i have power back, i will stay involved in whatever vid u do!!.......i DID e-mail u my addy for my t-shirt.....just took a while, as no power, no heat, kinda puts a damper on your daily routine....GREAT VID!!...PEACE to you!!

    This was a solid reveiw. But any chance you will carve it up, recut the seats and re flow it? I did a set a few years back. They would only go 330 after some porting and a valve job. The limit was the chamber and the valve location is pushed to close to the plug side of the chamber shrouding them. Like most 440 heads.
    Anyway. Interesting test. I would like to see trickflow send you a head to test.

    Judging by the porosity thats in the casting, Id say they are straight up from china. Little to no nitrogen purge during casting.

    Interesting..my stock 440 source heads flowed more than this set...when they were prepped they topped out at 305/268 @ .700

    They look like the stock 440 head and if you paint them its hard to tell. They are inexpensive compared to a Trick Flow or an AFR but Engine Master’s tested these and no comparison to Trick Flows performance.

    Many years ago I had mopar cars and I had the 440 and a 426 marine wedge . I finally moved on the chev . In my option the RB mopar engine were just torque motors and the hp was left to the hemi . I never thought that the wedge motors had enough cylinder heads to make the power I wanted . I always thought a wedge head that was a modern design would make the 440 be appreciated . I thought that indy did something with the max wedge design . I don't even know if the factory every built a head for the wedge that was a real contender

    On Engine Masters S6 E104 General Mayhem 440 Returns they test David Freiburger's 440 engine with as cast 440 Source heads and it made NA 564.2 TQ @ 4100 RPM and 536.1 HP @ 5600 RPM and 753.5 TQ @ 5200 RPM and 755.3 HP @ 5300 RPM on a small 150 shot of N2O.

    Thank you very much for the detailed analysis. This was my takeaway as well. It's unfortunate that the chamber side wasn't copied off of a better head (since we're basically talking about a copied head design with no real engineering effort).
    I bought a pair of these non-CNC'd for my 512 build. I didn't think there was enough power return on the price to warrant CNC. Granted, I'm getting the ports re-cut and marginal flow improvement, but not expecting an amazing outcome. My max rpm is 6k (if ever) in a truck with no traction. The reason to buy these heads is the external look and universal fit. There are better heads obviously.
    Comments here about the components are appreciated I'll discuss this with my builder, but the components on first inspection seemed 'alright' for my application. If I ever make it to 6k miles on the build, I'll pull the heads for inspection.

    Eric you are thinking about this wrong.Every successful person needs people they can delegate responsibilities to. If you spend four hours a week doing lawn maintenance what could you do in that four hours? If you will be doing something you are more productive than the cost it would be worth doing. If i can spend an hour longer at work and spend that money on a take out meal so i don't have to cook or wash dishes thats a plus for me because i didnt have to spend any time grocery shopping or cooking and almost none doing dishes. That hour of work saves me more than an hour at home.
    You dont cast your own heads because it is not worth your time. You dont wind your own valvesprings. There is a bunch of stuff that you already do not do that you pay someone else for because those services make you more productive and the benefits outweigh the costs.

    Yes finally a mopar head. Love it. I never understood why 440 source used the shitty factory wedge shaped chamber. Other than maybe they bought the casting dies from mopar to make their heads? They're cast in China also.

      Exactly what I was wondering. Engine masters did a comparison with trick flows 270cc max wedge be the normal 240cc. The 270s made more power than the 240s everywhere, and completely walked away at about 5.5k rpm.

    The chamber is the same as the original E brock head , 906 heads have open chamber , this is sort of a closed chamber.

    You really want a 2.19 intake and at least a 1.75 exhaust. I mean Petty racing worked this out in the early 70s when there was giant handicap on the Hemis but they worked out they would be better off with the Wedge motor , which was grandfathered in.

      They actually ran Hemi blocks with wedge heads . In some photos you can see them swapping engines that have the web bolts, lol.

      Heads don't care what block you have as long as it fits right, they are going to flow whatever they flow with the same bore and stroke.Hemi block is much stronger than the wedge block though

    Thanks! 440 Source says these flow 330! I had them on a 543 and I could only go 11.7 (at 5000' altitude). I dropped a valve and put a hole in a cylinder. What are the best flowing heads I can buy to get me in the 10's at my altitude? The TF 270's (flowing @ 350 or the Indy's?

    That chamber is copied from an early 60s mopar closed chamber head. I think they were 915 and 615 castings. The late 60s mopar heads were open chambers.

    Eric have you verified your torque converter will work with the powerglide? I know you can get the hydro input shaft, but IIRC the converter needs a bushing to work with it? Check it out.

      Yes. The converter was originally used on a powerglide with turbo splines. Then to th350 and now back to powerglide.

      He reviewed the trick flows and liked those. 240cc. Fully cnc ported. Engine masters also put some max wedge 270s on a 440 and thing gained power everywhere in the curve. Basic 10 to 1 compression. I’m thinking that what I’m going for.

      You can if it doesn't get into the top cut of the valve job and you have enough piston to valve clearance.

    Looks like they were simply copying the old Max wedge combustion chamber design. The design was used in the 426 max engines, the older 413 max, early 440 engines (67,68) & 63, 64, 65 hi perf 383 engines. They were all closed chamber type while the later 906 & 452 heads were open chamber heads. You could increase the CR of the later 440s by using the older closed chamber design. I think the 440 source head is cast in China, don't know where the components come from. This is a good replacement head for a street driven 440 or 383 if your old heads are worn out, costs less than a complete rebuild of a set of 906 heads and will increase cr. Want a race head? Expect to pay a bunch more.

    The standard stealth heads are a great deal, they run better than the stock 906 heads even with a good valve job, and you save a ton of weight, but the CNC version heads are obviously a total rip off.

    The flow numbers are horrible. 440 source states the flow is 280/290 at .600 on the intake on a stock head of there’s before porting. I’m running a set on my 383. I wanted a weight savings and modern head. Not so modern after all.

    MOPAR guys are not only used to piss poor designs, we're used to piss-poor designs NEVER being updated. On the rare occasion when we get something decent.....like a W8 head for the small block, it gets discontinued. Just another reason why you have to have your head examined if you decide to build a MOPAR and think you're going to make modern day power levels. Unless you're building a boosted HEMI, that is. The rest of the MOPAR aftermarket designs are either garbage, outdated, or both.

    Geeze..... the roadkill guys with all the choices they could have got they winged it and bought a set of those 440 source and have their duster running hi 10 with them still if they really explored all the choices got a good set like some trick flows or something I'm sure they could have afforded it they'd really be tearing ass it's really disappointing to hear or just a set of factory Mopar heads that are casted with aluminum and CNC ported with those lame-ass chambers

      They have always inflated the flow numbers. Edelbrock did too as I recall.

      The 440 source numbers are indeed inflated, but also, I think Eric mistakenly flowed these on a 4.31 bore fixture which is .010 smaller than even a factory bore !! 4.32 is factory 440 bore spec. Most over bore by .030 when rebuilding, so a bore fixture .040 larger at 4.350 would have a huge impact on the flow numbers listed here.

    Ouch! An HP printer? Run forest run! Their driver package is as large as an operating system and they are buggy besides. As I said when you asked for opinions on a new printer as always I say get a Brother laser printer as the driver package is nice and small. They just plain work and Brother supports their printers near forever so you will have driver support in 2099..

      Not sure why you would voice that kind of opinion then if you weren't trying to irritate someone, but whatever. I'm just not the kind of guy to put someone else's shit down to make me feel good and I see that a lot, mostly from bench racers that have or done nothing. Sounds like you race so that's cool if you actually have experience.
      I just want everyone to have a good time doing with and what they like. It's no fun if they're all the same anyway. Those trophies aren't from bracket racing they are from mud racing.
      I've had Eric do a few sets of heads for me and just flow test some too. Some factory iron some aluminum. He doesn't do that much Mopar and honestly I don't know how good he is with them but the principle is the same on all heads and I trust him to do what he can. He's a straight up dude and has always made gains on them and gets the work done in a timely manner so I like him and would recommend him to most anyone.
      I've never owned any of the 440 source heads as from what I had seen they were basically A sock type head. I had those that are already ported so I didn't see the point. They did have an Eldebrock Victor clone of sorts that interested me but I decided against them because of quality.

      @@ronsmith7739 I have heard of them but what i meant is you can't just bolt a set of 426 hemi heads on a 440 , the stage v heads are not the same as the regular hemi heads the stage v is a kit with the pistons, intake and heads and if you really want to make big power better to just spend the money on a new callies hemi block that accepts all the gen2 hemi heads that will handle way more power than the 440 block
