It’s just a wear item. It happened over 5 years of use. It’s not dangerous. It was just annoying. Some pilots are fine basically forever. Probably better materials. Many new gas appliances, like stoves, now use electronic ignition, and don’t even have pilot lights.

Why did the orifice get bigger? Is this something that happens a lot? Should we be checking all our appliances for this degradation?
