Car Emergency Kit / Get Home Bag

  • In January 2022, motorists in Virginia were trapped on a stretch of highway for more than 24 hours after a winter storm caused innumerable accidents and impassable conditions. In this video I go over the emergency supplies I keep in my car. While everything I keep in my vehicle is not featured in this video, I cover the majority of it here. This is not a survival bag or "bug out bag," rather it's a bag intended to sustain me as I walk to the closest store or into cell service area if my vehicle were to break down while I am driving in remote areas. The contents could also be used during a natural disaster such as a major flood or winter storm that resulted in road blockages, ultimately forcing me to walk home, or sustain me if I were trapped on a highway.

    THANK YOU!!!!!!! I must admit when I saw the title I thought...oh boy, here we go again...another tacticool fool. However....OUTSTANDING job!!! I'm a US Army veteran and a firefighter paramedic of 30 years. Watching the testosterone charged, zombie apocalypse conspiracy theorists and their packs initially was funny then became nauseating. Another type joker out there is the EDC dorks who spent $200 on amazon so they can play show and tell. You have configured a useful, realistic collection and more importantly have the proper attitude and perspective. The weirdos waiting for zombies and a lawless state unfortunately surfaced in 2017 to 2021 when being deranged was popular and displayed some ridiculous ideology. Thanks again for your common sense and intelligence. Well done.

    Just a thought. Throw an empty small book bag or pack in. Too your point, you have a comprehensive set up, but walking to get gas a couple miles away, no need to bring "the house". That way you can pull a few items for the trip and still have all you need in case of an extended stay or travel. Call it a "necessities" bag or pouch. Good stuff.

    Good kit. A little too much for my liking. One thing I really liked is that you keep actual water instead of just throwing a filter in the bag.
    One advice from my side. If you are keeping masks/respirators keep atleast 3. If you are in a situation which needs a graded mask 1 will simply won't be enough. For example normal things like pandemic, fire, warzone, bushfire, bomb blast, chemical leakage, nuclear contamination etc and ofcourse TEOTWAWKI scenarios too. You need to replace these every 4 hours. Also if you have 3 you will be able to share atleast 1 with anyother person stuck with you or if you find anyone else in need.
    Also keep a firesteel. You don't need huge rebar types. A small keychain type would be enough .lighters and matches are always prone to failure.

    • @BacktotheOutdoors
      @BacktotheOutdoors  3 года назад +2

      Great tip on the masks - I am going to add a second one for my wife. The kit can always be scaled down (or up) depending on how far I have to walk. As far as fire steel, I'm not a big fan of these in this particular application for a couple reasons. They are more difficult to use than some people realize - though of course it depends on skill level and the conditions, and it adds weight I probably don't need. The storm-proof matches I have will function even when wet, and I keep all of my fire kit in a waterproof bag. In a long-term survival bag I would definitely include a magnesium fire starter or a ferro rod because matches and lighter fluid will run out, but for this bag I excluded them because it's unlikely that I would be living out of the bag for more than 24 hours, and I want to keep the bag as light as possible. The situation you describe is my most likely need of an emergency kit. That being said, there is absolutely no way I could walk 10ft with that pack. As a backpacker that’s fairly easy to estimate because I’ve carried packs ranging from 20-50 pounds in a variety of terrains across the country. The best and only way way to figure that out is to try it. Doesn’t have to be overnight trips, you could do a day hike.

    • @BacktotheOutdoors
      @BacktotheOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      I keep it covered with a blanket. I mentioned the cutting tools in the video as a possibility, but I’m not concerned about the average petty thief carrying a pair of bolt cutters when targeting cars. 99.9% are smash and grab - they won’t have bolt cutters.

      @@smokethirteen - I agree the risk exists, but I don't understand your logic. This is like saying "you shouldn't lock your door at night because someone could smash through it with a sledge hammer." The fact that there's a small chance that some thief, somewhere in the country might have bolt cutters on them and break into my car is not justification for deciding not to carry emergency equipment, just as the existence of sledgehammers doesn't negate the idea of locking your doors.
      Your air compressor was visible from the outside of the truck, correct? This means that someone might have known it was there ahead of time, knew it was chained down, and brought bolt cutters for that reason. This is not comparable to a random smash and grab thief breaking into a vehicle, because in all likelihood the vast majority of those thieves are not carrying bolt cutters.

I keep two quarts of water for my work shift and usually only drink one, or one and a half.. so, I keep one extra quart in the jeep. I also keep a filter that fits the bottles, and a 750ml cook pot in case I find the need to boil water. Since I carry my lunch for work, I keep a small amount of extra food which i will rotate out occasionally. Worse case for me, since I work about 65 miles from home, would be a long walk through high desert terrain. There are a few communities along my homeward path where I could top off my water supply.
