  • This is one of the projects we have going on this week. The first step at this property was to get all the stumps ground out, the next step is to get all the stump grindings cleaned up from the mess we made!
Had a bonus job at the end of the day as well, I was not able to film it, but we got it done for the customer!
Interested in checking out the tools and equipment we use in our business? Below is a link to the products we use, we get a little kick back from it as well if you purchase anything through there, take some time to check it out!

I have never seen the Ventrac grind a stump that large... wow what a beast!! I have the old-style stump grinder and I would not attempt a stump quite that large, but the new style seems to handle anything thrown at it. Also really enjoying seeing the dual wheel tool being put to work! :D

This is the second one around 7 feet wide I have done! It takes a long time, but it can do it 👍 I think I'm finally at the point where I need to rotate the cutting teeth for the first time now, they were a little dull on this job, I actually managed to break one in half I found out after this job!
Used the tool a couple different times that day, to put them on and do a fast swap for that last job of the day I wasn't able to film 👍

@@sawyerslawncareservice That is very impressive that you have been able to cut so much material without rotating the cutters. Sharp teeth make a huge difference! I have a 4 or 5 footer I am hoping to grind out this spring. We'll see how my KC180 does on that. May need to upgrade. Hehe :D

You have to make sure you have your pricing right for stump grinding for sure, the teeth , grinder and tractor cost a pretty penny! I have a little tweaking to do myself to get the pricing where I want it to be. I would run dual wheels with it if you are planning to tackle bigger stumps, it has been great so far, would definitely suggest getting one!

Why do you recommend the duals for larger stumps? I'm renting a kc220 for a weekend soon and running single wheels. 2 stumps are about 40" wide

@willp942 You don't have to run dual wheels by any means, I just prefer to. If you try to bite off more stump than the grinder can handle, it can tend to pull you up towards the stump, so having the wide wheelbase helps keep the tractor on the ground when that happens.
The second thing depends on how you go about grinding out larger stumps. The machine can go down around 3-5 inches into the ground, If you're using dual wheels you can float over the work area even if you ground down into the ground already on spots, of you are just running the standard wheel setup, you just have to pay more attention to where the uneven ground is as you want to try to keep the tractor as level as possible when moving back and forth to grind against the stump 👍
Just take your time with it and take smaller bites off the stump and I'm sure you will do fine! They are generally softer on the outside, harder on the inside. If they are 40" stumps you will probably be looking at around 1-2 hours per stump.

@sawyerslawncareservice thanks for the quick reply! I was curious about how much time per stump when they're that big. Glad I got the weekend rental.

Wow! How much are you able to charge for a stump that large?

    • @sawyerslawncareservice

We charge by the inch for our stump grinding, though we are still newer to stump grinding and are still working on accurate pricing based on width, stump height/wood type. That big one was a pain in the butt to grind out with the sized stump grinder but we made it work!

How long did it take you to grind the large stump? You kinda fast forwarded some so it was hard for me to judge.
I picked up mine today and am going to use it as a side business.
I’m in WV and not sure where you’re from, but how much do you charge by the inch? Trying to get an idea where to start
Also, what rpm’s do you usually operate at?
I did a partially rotten stump today and was running about 3200 rpm. I suppose it depends on the type of wood.
      Anyways, great video!

The big one took about 2 to 2.5 hours, I needed to rotate the teeth a little sooner though, they were getting pretty dull. I was charging by the inch, but I may switch over to just a flat rate cost based on how long I think it will take hour wise. The big ones like this one do not work well for me under the "pay per inch" pricing method unless I scale it by size. I run the Ventrac on the way on full RPM whenever running the attachments. It is all belt driven and no pto so it works a bit different than a typical tractor.

Would it have been better to saw it off at ground level?
