  • The Saint Louis University Libraries Special Collections, in a joint program with the University's Office of Mission and Ministry, presented a guest lecture and panel discussion on the Saint Louis Exorcism of 1949 on Oct. 29, at Pius XII Memorial Library.
The events surrounding this exorcism, which was performed in St. Louis in 1949, formed the basis for the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist, and the 1973 film of the same name, considered by many to be the most frightening motion picture of all time. The film marks its 40th anniversary this year.
The novel and the film tell the story of the demonic possession of a twelve-year-old girl and the exorcism performed to free her of the demon. Both the novel and the film portray these events as occurring in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., with two Jesuit priests on the faculty of Georgetown University conducting the rite of exorcism.
However, the real-life events on which the novel and film are based involved a fourteen-year-old boy living in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. Between January and March 1949, a series of strange and bizarre events took place in or near the boy's home, but the actual exorcism was performed in St. Louis on the campus of Saint Louis University and at the Alexian Brothers Hospital (no longer standing) from March to April 1949, by Jesuit priests associated with Saint Louis University.
The guest speaker, Thomas B. Allen, is the author of Possessed: The True Story of an Exorcism (Doubleday, 1993), which is considered the most comprehensive treatment of the events associated with the 1949 exorcism. Allen provided a chronological account of these events and also discussed his friendship with Father Walter Halloran, S.J., the young seminarian who assisted at the exorcism and whom Allen met when beginning research for his book in 1990.
Father Paul Stark, S.J., Vice-President for Mission and Ministry, moderated the program and provided an overview of the modern rite of exorcism.
University Archivist John Waide spoke about the individuals involved and the continuing interest in these events and their subsequent reporting and retelling. Noted Jesuit historian and scholar, Father John Padberg, S.J., discussed the history of exorcism in the Church and recounted his recollections of the participants.

That first priest that prayed? Now THAT was a prayer!!!! Why don't we hear a prayer like that every Sunday? People would sit up and take notice for sure. Instead we have a mumbling of prayers of th e people for 10 minuted, while we just keep repeating Lord hear our prayer, and No one is even actually praying. I want to hear prayers like this in church. It's probably because he's old school. When he was coming up through the ranks, they knew that the devil was real, he was not a psychological construct of the evil men can do; he is a person without a body who is not to be trifled with.

I would take note, if I were you that the Aunt Harriet had passed away. Was she a spiteful woman, I wonder? She may have passed the initial spirit of spite to R. If she had cancer or some other fatal disease the spirit would pass, usually to a young family member. So I'd suppose this woman with a demonic entity could easily have called upon other spirits through agreement with R. to move the ouijah board instrument. A child can easily be called into an agreement that allowed a spirit or spirits to enter and use his body to move the device. In Judaiism there was a long standing tradition of putting an open pitcher next to the bed of the dying. Demonic spirits, it seemed, wanted to find a "wet" body to enter as their previous host died. Regardless of religion background, demon will move from the dying to the young--commonly within the family. Do you suppose this is the source of the title "familiar" spirits. The Jewish caretaker or family hoped any demon would enter the pitcher. At death, the pitcher was covered and the water disposed of. (The word "wet" is still used among certain murderers who refer to murder as "wet works." I known this term has been used by murderers in the Luciferian Order, but I don't know that it is exclusive to them. While we often hear the terms "devil" and "satan," the name by which he is known is Lucifer.)

Aloha Gina ~ I'm Native Hawaiian, my family was raised Catholic, Southern Baptist, Mormon, & Presbyterian. Ho’oponopono is an ageless type of wisdom and an ancient Hawaiian practice, a unique method of clearing and cleansing the mind, body and soul. It’s more than just positive thinking, Ho'oponopono transforms negativity and fear using acceptance, because deep down acceptance is the basis for transformation.
You have to understand that Hawaiian culture is founded on love, on the spirit of aloha. Hawaiians still practice the ancient ritual of forgiveness called Ho'opono'pono. Pono is justice is Hawai'ian. Translation: to make things right. It involves repeating this mantra:: I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. this is purifying to your mind and heart. This ancient Hawaiian practice is a process of making things right in your relationships, including with ancestors, the earth and yourself. I encourage you to explore this as a way to heal. There is nothing sacrilege in it since it parallels with the teachings of Christ. Forgiveness heals the mind heart and soul. Mahalo Nui Loa~

yes, agreed Alec. There is so much ignorance at large about the soul, the realm of angels and demons, mortal sin, sanctifying grace, exorcism of demons with full authority from Christ acting through the priest...on and on. All these things have always been available to the traditional Catholic. Today it is spat upon, attacked from outside and from within, and yet Catholicism has always been the keeper of truth providing those within its "ark" all they need to live their lives free from mortal sin, spiritual strength to endure discomfort, deal with crisis, and prepare for a good death, therefore enjoy this thing called, "happiness" despite all hardships.

My life changed when I realized these verses below are literally true.
It is a personal relationship with The King of Glory every person can have.
2 Cor. 4:4 says satan is the god of this world. He is responsible for hate, anger, revenge, bitterness. But we blame GOD when things go wrong.
I've been in the presence of the most ominous thing imaginable three times, I've had 4- 5,000 negative dreams. I've been held down 25-30 times, I've had so many thoughts of feeling guilty or worthless I planned suicide more than once. A pastor said he was constantly reminded of something he did. IGNORE THOUGHTS OF GUILT, it is NOT The Holy Spirit as some claim. Do not grieve The Holy Spirit who pours out GOD'S love Rom. 5:5. AND ignore dreams that make you depressed. Sing the song Light of the World by We the Kingdom when you wake up. It will change your emotions.
I've heard satan say "I don't want to pray". And I've heard him say things to prove he is stupid. He said "their hero died" referring to me when I thought I would, and "stop the trash talk" ; I then said it more to harass him knowing he could not do anything to me.
Some know he hears. Today I say satan you stupid, ignorant dimwitted moron you are the offspring of a sow you will bow to me because Jesus is right beside me.
The KOG is in our midst Luke 17:21 LITERALLY. Where's Jesus -in the KOG.
2 Cor. 13:5 do you not realize Christ Jesus is in you.
Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil (yesterday and today) 1 John 3:8 and John 10:10.. Jesus is Lord of the living (us) and the dead Rom. 14:9. Jesus said each day has its own troubles Mat. 6:34. I have been helped too many times to count. A man said fear left when I said Jesus remove anything here not from GOD'S love.
I told him next time he needs to ask as I won't be there.
Some are taught to fear GOD. HE said their fear of ME is a commandment of men Isa 29:13.
David Sorenson is used by GOD for miraculous healings and says religious mindsets have crept into the church for centuries. David says, “Many are looking for the return of Jesus Christ, but He is looking for people where He can dwell right here and now, with His glorious presence”. I have many examples of His presence.
Richard met GOD (RUclips) cries talking about GOD'S unconditional love.
Howard Storm (RUclips) cries talking about Jesus saving him.

With all due respect to Thomas B. Allen and his distinguished and sincere fellow panelists, they appear to be insufficiently informed as to their subject. To come anywhere close to having a true and comprehensive understanding of the "Robbie" Hunkeler/St Louis exorcism case, one must consult numerous resources published by different authors. Prior to the Hunkeler/St Louis exorcism of 1949, a similar case involving Emma Schmidt aka Anna Ecklund occurred in Earling, Iowa in 1928 (and beyond) that was the subject of the popular 1935 pamphlet "Begone Satan!" and a Times Magazine article published in 1936. The two cases share some major points in common: Both families hailed from Western Europe (the Hunkelers from Germany, the Schmidts from Switzerland), both cases feature aunts who purportedly exerted dark "occult" influences on those "possessed" and, most importantly, both cases feature the lurid "manifestations" that made for such horrific and sensational viewing in The Exorcist, the script for which was based upon BOTH cases although this is little known. In fact, it is details from the Schmidt/Iowa case provided in "Begone Satan!" that translated into the most shocking scenes in The Exorcist-- extreme levitation and projectile vomiting-- rather than the Hunkeler case.
A related footnote with regard to The Exorcist is that the "spider walk" scene, cut from the original release and later restored, was "borrowed" without acknowledgement from the 1963 possession-themed Italian film "Il Demonio" which was also based upon real-life events that took place circa the late 1950s-early 1960s in the Apulia region of Italy.
Given that the Schmidt/Iowa case predates the Hunkeler/St Louis case by decades and was well publicized, its possible influence in the Hunkeler case, perhaps even as a "script" or template of sorts, must be seriously considered. The definitive book about the 1949 Hunkeler/St. Louis case, apparently unknown to the panelists, is Sergio A. Rueda's "Diabolical Possession and the Case Behind The Exorcist: An Overview of Scientific Research, with Interviews with Witnesses and Experts" published in 2018. Rueda personally spoke with Ronald Hunkeler and others involved in the case and publishes for the first time previously unseen documents sourced from the first team to attempt treatment of Hunkeler. The second most important resource for the panelists to become familiar with is Mark Opsasnick's highly revelatory serialized article "The Haunted Boy of Cottage City: The Cold Hard Facts Behind the Story that Inspired The Exorcist" (originally published in 1999 in Strange Magazine and cited by Segio A. Rueda in "Diabolical Possession").
For those interested, here are links to the 1936 Times Magazine article about the Iowa case, Mark Opsasnick's "Haunted Boy" article, and Sergio Rueda's "Diabolical Possession" book:

@@emilys5024 Related to my previous response: Actress Daliah Lavi speaking about her role in the 1963 film "Il Demonio": "That [Il Demonio] is my best work, I think. Everything you see in that movie, except me and the other lead actor [Frank Wolff] is real. It was shot on real locations with real people who lived and worked in those villages. It was in Lucania. The Pulia [Apulia] they call them. It's up in the mountains. I read the story and I was hooked right away. The woman I played, she was just a young girl, not a woman. I remember she had pigtails. ...most of the things I do in the movie, she did. I think they took her story and edited it, because a lot of the things she did were things the Church wouldn't allow us to recreate. They took me to a hospital and allowed me-- they took me to see her and she was very gentle. She was not at all crazy. The doctors told me she could be like this for a couple of days, and then she would just go into her... psychotic part, or whatever. I remember that I had to go back a couple of times, and nothing happened. She was just sitting there, playing with blocks, doing nothing, just looking at me through these big eyes. I remember that she looked very fragile. But luckily, I caught her once in her madness, and it was unbelievable. She became so strong she could lift a whole table, and she looked like the type who could not even lift a feather! With the adrenaline they get, she could do anything! And then she started to talk strangely, to curse, and... she laid down on the floor and touched her head to her feet and started to roll! Anyway, that's how I saw her. I didn't copy her, but I got her energy. I was very taken by this movie, by this part, and it never happened to me before or since. I mean, to be almost possessed myself by the movie, by the girl. She entered my persona. It was frightening! The fact that the atmosphere had stayed in the village helped a lot. We were not in a studio; we were in the mountains with those people, and I was affected by this, very sensitive to that environment. ...I felt that I was this person, because everybody in the movie said that I was possessed. It took me about two to three weeks to get out of the role once I came back to Rome. I had nightmares, and .... That's why I remember this movie so well, because it left a mark on me, emotionally and physically. I was not acting."
From: Video Watchdog magazine #170 / Sept-Oct 2012 includes the first publication of an interview with Il Demonio lead actress Daliah Lavi, conducted by film critic Tim Lucas in November 2000.

An exorcism is a Matter of faith. The greater the faith found in the exorcist, the more efficacious the prayers. All possessions, can only occur with Our Lords approval. Generally by people who are very Holy. Or As a victim soul. Others as a way to draw them closer to our Lord.
The prayers are ones Mother church has pulled together over the ages. It can be delivered in the vernacular or in times were a little more umph is needed, in Latin. Latin is a language particularly displeasing to demons. A language they cannot pervert, which is a reason Mother church uses it as it’s mother tongue.

I feel that keeping Jesus on the cross is wrong, because he did not stay on the cross! It's like whoever does that is crucifying forever,it's bad,he overcame death, and lived to come back as he will again soon, but this time as the lion, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!😊Amen,Glory to God 🙏

That is true…but, they use the Crucifix as the reminder that we are still in this world and will suffer and to keep our eyes on He Who took on the worst suffering…for all of us out of Love.

I lived in St Louis for a long time. Ive been to many of the locations they mention. I was a little taken aback by the condescending undertone to this entire talk. Skepticism is certainly required but this seemed overly arrogant. The answer the priest gave one gentleman, when asked where to go if they think someone may be suffering from “this” was troubling. And the inference of mental illness as an explanation of the New Testament account of the Lord casting demons into the pigs bordered on offensive.
I believe the people that were involved in this saw the personification of evil and they know it. Because of the unpopular nature of the topic, the “were smarter than that now” philosophy has taken over and they’ve chosen to dismiss it. Perhaps this is the whole reason Satan wanted the boy to go to St. Louis in the first place. He’d be able to put on a show for all to see and, ultimately, they’d never believe it was him.

😂Get Fr. Vince Lampert or Fr. Chad Ripperger on the panel for a 'real' discussion with 'real' answers. Both very holy and knowledgeable EXORCISTS.
They call it what it is.
See any videos they speak on ... Videos with them actually speaking. NOT "he said she said".

What is sad and disturbing is that such a seemingly pleasant individuals can create all of these stories to further their own gain. Says alot about the people we have to deal with in life. Demons, real or not, that are powerful and intelligent ancient entities would see no gain in the possession of an insignificant human. Unless these men are insane, which I doubt, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Funny, the devil did not possess me when I was alone with the Ouija game. My hands touched on the wood without said words but it moved with my hands by itself to the left corner of Ouija board until it was out of it. It was strange. It made me understood...wood point that meant the devil stood there I didn't see. It happened in about two years ago.

This is slightly related and a deeper theological question relating to Catholicism and the Holy Trinity belief, ie that Christ, The Holy Spirit and God are one and the same...in the New Testament the Gospels seem to contradict this in their accounts of the life of Jesus. Jesus refers to 'his father' as a clearly separate God-head entity numerous times. And also says he does not perform miracles, but merely does 'his fathers work' and even states he will reside in 'his fathers heavenly kingdom by his side' after his death. Then there's the well known part in the New Testament where Jesus predicts his death and struggles with this. Numerous times Satan appears to Jesus and tries to get him to question and test God's will and purpose, and even offers Jesus an alternative to dying on the cross in the desert while Jesus was fasting and he was trying to get him to break his fast. If Jesus and God are one and the same, surely Satan wouldn't be able to do this? This notion of Jesus and God being the same entity, puts Satan on an equal footing or even a higher level, if Satan as he claimed to Christ, could offer him 'the kingdom of the earth' without needing to die on the cross? Surely Satan tempting God, is impossible?

Courts don't recognize invisible creatures like angels and demons. So the people that blame the devil for their problems, get short shrift from judges. Why don't judges get the truth and blame demons for Roman Catholic Child rapes? Why are Judges so blind that they don't see the truth? Are Protestants bribing them?

Why do clregy not know the answer to the question "who are you going to call?" Go to your priest, the exorcist of each diocese is the bishop, unless he appoints a diocesan exorcist. Go to your local priest or bishop for help. It is a disgrace that these Jesuits would not know that. Or if they do know, that they won't say it.
