After 40 years of being a hardcore Bananarama fan, I'm JUST finding out that "I heard a Rumor" is basically another song. 😂😂😂 It's almost identical!!!!! This is a good mash-up though. ❤
Waterman definitely swiped from Fortunati.and Italo Disco during the mid to late 80's , no doubt about that. As a Europop fan, still love SAW's late 80's pop music though.
SAW's late 80s synths and sounds though were terrible compared to their earlier stuff. They just copy pasted the same cheesy sounds. Fortunatis sounds much better and has aged far better.
Suddenly, in June, 22nd, 2023, an other video appeared in my timeline, suggering Michael Fortunati. Why? I didn't know this guy, but I heard any videos of Bananarama in this week. So... Fortunati is only the male version of Bananarama. Scandalous version. Hahahaha But this was a good version. Greetings from Brazil
I think that Pete Waterman probably thought that he'd get away with it, as the Italo Disco 80's sound wasn't big in the UK. "I heard a rumour" is my fave Banana's song of all time !. You can really tell the similarities on the Original 12" of "I heard a rumour". Which is on the esdel 2 CDs/DVD release of the "wow" album.
I dont think he did. The similarity is way too blatant and if this happened these days Bananarama would've gotten sued so fast their heads would've spun. Many modern artists like Sam Smith and Katy Perry have gotten sued for much less.
...maaaaaaan, Bananarama must've netted Michael some SERIOUS residuals, for him to have THAT many "Greatest Hits" from ONE SONG! ...WHOOOO!! (6:13) ...ha-HAAA!!
One of these songs was 'written on Top of the original '. Was Give me up, first ? Then, 'I Heard a Rumor' was written on Top of 'Give Me Up'. Ask Stevie Nicks, she wrote a song on top of Prince's 'Red Corvette'
No es un cover. La de Bananarama es una canción distinta pero con los acordes y estructura copiados nota por nota de la canción de Michael Fortunati, aunque Stock, Aitken and Waterman lo nieguen. Lo único que cambia es la melodía cantada.
Give me up was my fave eversince I knew back then that bananarama's version of the melody came only after and a mere rip-off😂😂but great songs just the same which defined my 80's childhood❤❤
1000% SAW(Stock Aitken Waterman - produced I heard a rumour ) ripped off Michael Fortunati , it isnt the first time they ripped of Italian music and explains why SAW produced late 80's songs always sounded alot like Italian music because they just plagiarised their work without paying royalties. Horace Toshi also big respect to Japan for paying Michael Fortunati like all foreign musicians handsomely for his music (idol grop BeBe made a cover version of Give me up and he still revives royalties from his music appearing on Japanese TV today!) and for him to preform there as he was a big star in Japan and is probably the godfather of ''eurobeat" . My guess is that SAW/london records in the UK plagiarised the song knowing that he was a relatively small artist signed to a small label in Northern Italy so wouldn't go to court and spend large sums of money fighting a civil case. Italian musicians got major scammed in the 80s from their music being plagiarised! SAW made their fortunes ripping off ripping Italian artists music..
This mash-up shows that "I heard a rumour" is plagiarism obviously. Michael Fortunati's song was released in summer 1986 whereas Bananarama's track was released 2 years later. I like both songs but I've liked "I heard a rumour" because it has always sounded like "Give me up" so much... not to say TOO MUCH.

I first heard "Give Me Up" around May 1986. "I Heard a Rumour" was released in the summer of 1987.
There is no doubt SAW pilfered Give Me Up, just as they repurposed the bassline from Trapped by Colonel Abrams for Never Gonna Give You Up (verses).

Recién me entero que es un fabuloso cover, el de Bananarama pero igualmente supera a la versión original del italiano
