  • I'm very excited to have received a large order of 20 different varieties of gladiolus from LM Bolle (a Canadian retailer of glad bulbs) and I can't wait to share what they all look like with you! Here on our flower farm we have been experimenting with growing glads for the last few years. I love them because they are fairly cheap and incredibly easy to grow. Unfortunately, they don't over winter in my growing area, so I have to order new varieties every year. But at least that means we get to have the fun of opening the box up together, lol.

I live in the Netherlands and I see gladiolas are arranged on bigger, hand-tied, european bouquets. I see them in big office windows, art galleries and award shows. Tweaking your bouquet recipe might open new ideas for your customers and could potentially change their perspective.

Glads make me think of weddings, my Grandpa, and hummingbird gardens.
When I was a kid, i would look through the photo albums my mom had put together from the 80s. I was a 90s child. It seemed my parents, my aunts and uncles all had glads in their wedding areangements! I can still remember them, and what the flowers were. They were grown by my dads father, my grandpa, the master gardener, who loved hummingbirds and all things garden related. He would keep an incredible glad garden going to attract hummers. I was and still am obsessed with birds! I loved tje glads most as a kid because they got tall and the birds that came to drink at them would be at eye level for me to see. Since grandpa always had so many flowers there was always some to use🎉 when someone got married.
Mom and dads color theme was pink, and moms bouquet was stunning with pink and white glads. Dad wore a pink cumberbun with a white suit. They were very fancy! Mom had that soft 1980s big hair thing going on. Glads are gorgeous and I need to replace mine this year!

The idea of glads as funeral flowers has always surprised me. They are used in a lot of other church arrangements as well, probably because, yes, they are large. Kudos for bringing them into homes, let's hope people can break the association in their minds.

RED is my FAVORITE bedding flower color...Think RED geraniums.. Please don't exclude red at any point in the growing season. "Clean bright red, no pink, no burgundy tones"... Sounds like the exact red I look for blood red. RED FLOWERS I feel represent life and health/prosperity and I think RED stands out the most. RED will look GREAT with pale pink cosmos in bouquets for the market stand. Mix the textures of the foliage in the bouquets as a focal point when mixing in RED flowers. As long as you take out all white flowers in the garden, which I do- exactly as you say- WHITE is for funeral (*believe me: I have worked 2 years in a funeral home)...Usually funeral flowers are lily, stock, roses, occasionally I see Glads, but Ironically the Glads I see in the funeral home are of pastel yellow for the most chosen color of glads for funerals. I sometimes see the blood red you are talking about that your husband is so kindly pushing you to grow things that don't appeal to you personally. It's true that what you like is not the only way - but I'm so glad you acknowledge you need EVERY COLOR of the rainbow. "The saturated colors where the camera can't even pick it up"- try using the RED with only deep neon magenta and bubblegum pink, try adding a bicolor magenta and light pink to the red 💐. And stick to just those 3 tones. Don't mix pastels at all with RED. Make sure no weird crazy inverse striping containing fragments of yellow or white is hiding deep in the eye of the other flower petals that will go next to the RED flowers in the boquets...No white with red- I agree that does look like Christmas. Yellow of any shade and white also get lost against the blue sky when put next to the BLOOD RED you show and are discussing...
Just some thoughts on BLOOD RED....anyone else have a favorite flower color they are loyal to?

If you cut the tops off of the glads they look different and people can't tell what they are. We have people ask us at the flower shop all the time what they are. Sometimes we only leave about one third of the flowers at the bottom so it looks like a fluffy ball and isn't spiky at all.

Literally just finished planting a 23-foot wrought iron fence line in four rows of multiple colors. My love for them started a few years back planted them along the vinyl fence in my backyard and was surprised at how beautiful they were. Ill be planting more later on this week again in the backyard.
Below is the variety I got and where I'm putting them. :) I may have bought to many. lol. I have issues like you when it comes to buying plants. Also, you look lovely in your pretty green dress surrounded by flowers. I was sad that I couldn't see the flowers bloom that I just planted immediately so I searched glads to get my color fix and found your post. Thank you for including the images. I saw several that I just planted in your list. Love it! I'm visually impaired so I love being surrounded by bright colors. :) Your video made me smile.
PS: Sorry if the list is weird I had it typed up already just so I could stay organized while planting. Made a color grid scheme diagram to cause I'm a werido. lol.

Love your enthusiasm and your channel. Just placed a big glads order for my Mom's garden. Her reservations, as with tall lilies and bearded iris, is that the staking is a pain. I'm so glad that you mentioned planting close together to help them support each other. There's so many flower enthusiasts that don't garden but do love bouquets, that I hope you continue to include them in your farmer's market selections. Glads provide that "thriller" to the thriller-filler-spiller design concept in vases as well as container gardening. If you could just continue to educate people to all the colors and hybridizing going on with glads you'd win those shoppers over. :) (try your local restaurants for larger flower orders for table vases!)

I found the tip online of cutting them shorter by removing the top buds. Then they look completely different and are easy to design with

I'd Love them in my landscape maybe you could sell them in pots already ready to go in the ground like a nursery if the florist don't get on board with your ideas nice back up plan.

Thanks for all the great info on glads! I used to have them and they were always striking in the garden. Maybe they need to be added to my new garden especially the Milka, Sugar Plum, and Adrenaline with a little Esta Bonita thrown in!!!

I love gladiolus! I would always ask for a big bunch of them on my birthdays growing up. Inevitably, the floral section of the grocery store would be next to the bakery section where I got to pick out my cake. The glads just seemed so magical to me and would beckon to me across the aisles. 😀 bonus that they were affordable for my parents. If there weren't any, in stock, I would pick carnations for the scent and that they looked like skirts with crinolines 😀 I will always have them both in my garden. ❤

I recently saw a channel that opens their farm as a photoshooting location and charges for that. I think that is such a great idea.

I'm growing Costa and Cream Perfection glads this year. I typically dislike tropical looking flowers, but there are so many beautiful colors that gladioli come in that I can't really help myself. Good job limiting yourself to just 1000 corms, I bet that was difficult :)

I'm going to try glads again this yr. In the drought we've had the last few yrs. I gave up. They didn't bloom at all. But...I have 3 mixes for early summer thru fall colors. Great tip about cutting off the tips. I'll do that as I had trouble selling them here. I'm not able to keep the weeds out of them...but they're so pretty I don't care!! The funny part of this vid. is that you only ordered 1000 corms. I knew you would need a bigger fix than that!!! You look good in that shade of green, too.

I love glads! But I think it's partly because of nostalgia. My dad passed away when I was 9, but I have memories of them growing at his house... I love them in bouquets, but agree they're hard to work with. I usually cut the tip off to make them a little shorter, and then remove the bottom few flowers that are already open, so that I can use them in a bouquet easier (without the bottom flowers being smashed). I also love that, like lillies, sunflowers, etc. you can succession plant them, and have the harvest spread out if you want.

I don’t even want to see white! Haha I have seen enough of that color! So come on and bring on the colors! ❤️🌈💐🌸🌼🌺

Glads are one of the first bulbs I grew as a young gardener. I could get 30 bulbs for a dollar (1980s) at a local garden center. I miss those days! :)
