Mike Seeger spent his whole life learning AND teaching old-time hillbilly, country, & blues. He was awesome. Sure doesn't seem like it's been nearly 10 yrs since he passed away. R.I.P Mr. Mike
Just to see the women smile makes my day, she must've had happy memories of playing with her famliy and that brings a tear to my eye cause I know how it feels when thier gone, but they live on through the music
Bought the video from Homespun and I’m very pleased with it. If I can play something close to Mother Maybelle’s style, I’ll be happy. This is the best explanation and demonstration I’ve seen yet.
Another key to Maybelle's style in her index finger's overall rhythm. On wildwood flower the index finger does a small upstroke after each thumb note. Making it a Bump-pa-dit-ty. 1 and 2 and. often times that first up with the index only hit the g and b strings while the full down and up hit all three highest strings.
somewhere in NPR archives Mike Seeger sings alternate verses for Wildwood Flower wish i knew the words. All the wild forest creatures are under her spell Something something something....
That was Buddy Starcher's "New Wildwood Flower." I was also searching for it for a long time before finding a recording by Lee Moore. Here are the words: She is waiting for me in a rose covered bower, And her eyes are like violets after a shower, For she's dreaming of dreams through the long summer hours, my sweetheart, my own, my frail wildwood flower. All the wild forest creatures are under her spell, On her shoulder the dove his love’s secrets will tell, And the shy dappled fawn comes to lie at the feet, of my frail, wildwood flower, so gentle and so sweet. I will pick tender blossoms to twine in her hair, blushing roses so red and the lilies so fair, Lovely myrtle so bright with the emerald dew, Modest buttercups yellow, forget-me-nots blue Hand in hand through the wildwood together we’ll stray She will sing, she will dance, and my heart she will sway And her laughter will echo like ripples at play, Till my cares, like my heart, she has stolen away There's no artist can paint her, no poet can write, How she warms this old heart like the sunbeams so bright, I will love and protect her and never more part, From that frail wildwood flower that twines around my heart.
Barry, the tune is "The Cannonball". Look up "The Cannonball Carter Family" on YT. Outstanding demonstration of why Maybelle Carter is still held in awe by modern instrumentalists. And why everything the Carter Family ever recorded is still available on modern recordings 80 years later!
You strom at a slight angle so the string doesn't catch in the notch between the pick and your finger, you almost make sure the pick is tight against your finer on al sides.
@Philosophy First Really got to you, did I? Check to see if you have a burr under your saddle. Some people like to try and pick a fight. Guess I didn't realize how much you have invested in the video. 😘
@Philosophy_First I am so sorry I hurt your feelings. You seem like the kind of guy who can dish it out but can't take it. There's always people like you, and I should have just ignored your comment. You think because you hide behind a pseudo name you can say whatever you want.

If you practice by the hour, you can pick that Wildwood Flower.
Out of all the Carter-style lessons I have watched this is the only correct one. Figures that it would be Mike Seeger who teaches it correctly.

When you strum down why doesn't it pull the pick off of your finger?
You strom at a slight angle so the string doesn't catch in the notch between the pick and your finger, you almost make sure the pick is tight against your finer on al sides.
@@BardNomad I found a pick called the Ultimate Finger Pick. I can strum up and down using it. Thank you for the reply.
That was not the worst instructional video I have ever seen, but it is so close I can't tell the difference.
You know you're supposed to buy the DVD, right?
@SirCoughsalot Oh! I completely missed the point. Ha ha ha!
