Framing the situation as a disconnect/isolation of her family and friends that she goes through for the sake of saving others, even as she falls apart/doesn't have a good support system... losing the opportunities to enjoy the privilege of having a family... going that interpretation with the lyrics instead of the traditional "I have all 3 problems mixed up into one" was beyond smart. I mean, that bit about "there's always dinner waiting on the table" for example: how many times has she missed meals, bonding opportunities, even personal recreation time... as amazing as the Botsfords are, this grace can't last forever. As she gets older she'll seem more and more suspicious, more disconnected, and in turn she'll feel emotionally isolated... Edit: Holy shit but like... there's such a good point being made about Tobey sharing in Becky's struggles. As far as we know, Claire was always supportive of her engineer son, but it's clear that since picking up crime, as it's developed more and more, it's driven a wedge between them. A very aggressive wedge because I mean, it doesn't seem like she knows how to get Tobey to stop his robo rampages? Either way, he definitely shares that struggle with Becky.
On the subject of Tobey- it’s my personal headcanon that he goes on robot rampages to get more attention and to have that freedom. To feel like nobody can stop him. Interacting with WordGirl- someone with similar interests as him, is powerful and who can match him in skill- who doesn’t tend to hurt him himself, just stop the robots from destroying things- is very likely the highlight of his day. The fact that people as smart as Becky and Tobey aren’t being boosted in education is odd- they’re both kid geniuses. And added to that, gifted kids tend to be neurodivergent- and quite a few people think Tobey could be autistic, so him not getting proper accommodations and being maladjusted socially- as well as how he’s treated at home (to the point of being scared of his mum and trying to hide stuff from her) is probably why he acts out. Even if all that was remedied, he’s found purpose in it thanks to WordGirl, so unless he truly becomes a hero and uses them for good, he probably won’t stop anyway.

I'm going to scream. This literal child is shouldering all of the weight of an entire city. She can't be a kid, she doesn't get the man, she can't even truly feel safe because the people who supposedly love her turn away at a moment's notice. She bears the weight of the world and has nobody to turn to. The villains might be nice, but in the end they're in it for themselves. But now I want to write a fic - I don't think this fall would hurt Becky, let alone kill her. It would be interesting to see her realization and what she would do after that. I think the story for Becky is that she's struggling with her identity as a heroin and a kid. Her jumping would end the human part of her life, basically forcing her self to stay Word Girl all the time, no more missing out on family time because heroes don't have that, no more lying friends and family heroes don't have to, and no more uncertainties about your secret identity if you're just a hero 24/7. Jumping kills the girl that can't save the day but immortalized the hero that always does. That's what I thought from her perspective at least.
Pretty intense for Wordgirl and yet I can't help but love it and of course overanalyze. Don't really see this as Becky trying to fall as that would only hurt the sidewalk. So it's more symbolic of her just giving up the Wordgirl identity in favor of pretending to be a normal human, which comes with its own psychological damage. Becky clearly values being a Botsford and I like that her family never refers to her as "my adopted daughter" or even "my adopted sister" that's some smart healthy writing that we don't see enough of in media. That said, Becky's kind of an extraordinary case because there is a major part of her life and heritage that literally alienates her from other people and especially her family, which has to be hard on a kid. It's scary thinking that the real you might change how your loved ones look at you. To complete my armchair psychological analysis, I can totally see Becky rejecting Wordgirl in favor of the Botsfords. Spider-Man does it all the time, and Superman's done it a few times too. She thinks she has to choose one or the other and I like that it's the villain kids (the people who know her well in both identities) that tell her she doesn't have to choose. To be clear; the show strongly implies that the only problem the family would have with Becky being Wordgirl is TJ, otherwise, it takes a lot to phase Tim and Sally Botsford. I think Becky's more worried they'll let her secret slip than outright rejection. My overthinking of this amazing fan-creation of a clever comedically absurd PBS kids cartoon is complete.
I also think that Becky is worried about how her family will think of her if they know she’s Wordgirl. Like if they’ll start treating her like a celebrity even at home.

when i was in like 1st grade i saw the word girl 2 part special where she meets Miss Power and she makes Word Girl a bully and i cried so hard that i ended up writing to PBS kids demanding they take it off the air immediately as it was “too scary” and i’m pretty sure my mom still has that letter-
That made-for-tv movie was the closest thing Wordgirl ever got to going rogue. Remember, for all her own intelligence & self-control, she's still only like a 10-12 year old; these people need to quit playing games with her emotions and screwing with her sanity, if she snaps and goes *_Homelander_* on us we're absolutely f///ed . she has nearly unlimited power and could do a lot of things _she_ regrets, to say nothing of the people in the city regretting.
Becky's a good kid, and I know she struggles with living a normal and hero life. She saved so many people, though she has no one who'll save her. It's depressing knowing that you can't be saved, but we all have a hero, they'll show up last moment like the 3 did at the end. This is a great song yeah, but it's easy to mess up animatics of it by kinda arbitrarily assigning people roles. But this? It was perfect. @@pastellaura2580 He was always talking about it. I was a teacher assistant for his class, and he and his two brothers all suffered from alarming mental health problems. They were taken from their parents (because of drugs or something) and they weren't exactly dealing with everything in a healthy way. His older third grade brother was well-known for his anger issues (fighting with other kids, punching a hole in the wall, etc) and his little kindergarten age brother was just a fucking psychopath. That kid was creepy af. This boy, the first grader, confided in me that the little brother would hurt him. He also had these HUGE dark circles, and he was prone to emotional breakdowns. So yeah, hearing him point to roofs and saying "I wanna jump off that" or him trying to crawl out the 2nd story window... it just all lined up. Despite all that, he was still really smart and I kept a special eye on him. (Though that's not saying much because I kept a close eye on all the students because hey, you never know who's gonna need the support.)

Sometimes I think about what if the show had more focus on a group of specific main characters (in a way, technically they do, but I just think it’d be neat if over the course of the show Becky slowly gained normal kid allies who helped her with excuses and stuff or helped a little bit in battles or smth). So I think about who those characters may be and my for sure answers would be Tobey, Scoops, and Violet. There’s also thoughts of Victoria and Eileen though 🤔. But I just tended to notice the few times the four of them (them being Becky, Tobey, Scoops, and Violet) were in the same episode together so I thought it’d be neat to think of them as potential allies (reformed tobey anyone? Xkxnxn) They wouldn’t technically be a superhero team tbh. Just people who know about her secret identity and get to hang out with her a lot yknow lol
This is a popular wish/opinion actually from what I've seen! Personally, the villain "kiddie table" trio and the "scouting" four are my favorite groups in the show to think about/create stuff for. I even kinda ship Vibeckscoobey (with a reformed Tobey ofc)

How do I feel about my childhood show being turned into a dark video with a depressing song? Happy. I feel happy. The show reminds me of how I was when I was younger, and the song reminds me of how I am now. Great job, the art is beautiful.
Just wanted to say: It doesn't matter the answer of "WHY", if you are depressed/have anxiety/any mental health issues, you're valid. You're worth it, seek help, go to therapy, keep fighting. I promise, it might take a long too (too damn long sometimes), but in the end, you'll be smiling again.
I watched this show as a kid and even then I saw how much Becky was put through. I related to it. I saw how hard she tried to please everyone. I still do relate. This animatic, as much as it shouldn’t be, is a comfort for me. I had a bad suicidal phase for 2 years, and I only recently snapped out. This is healing.
(*this comment has spoilers for this animation, watch it first.*) Doctor Two-Brains, Chuck the Evil Sandwich-Making Guy, Lady Redundant Woman, Mr. Big, The Butcher, The Whammer and Ms Question all in the middle before tobey came in and each I want to try and make a guess on why they wanted to well. If you know this video and the song then you understand what they wanted to do. Anyway, Chuck is somewhat easy which is no matter how hard he tries, his mother will sadly seemly love his brother more than him and that's his reason. Ms Question I think is actually because of her power. For you see if she just wants to ask a question without hurting anyone and justs wants some help, people will panic the moment she does and think she is attacking getting her in trouble when she may just needed some help. The Butcher, when reading some of the things in his background and character, well it was hard to think of a reason, but I think it maybe because his family line with his father being a villian and how maybe he never got a choice and also with how he fails at speaking english so bad that people may bully him at times. The Whammer, tricky in a way, but when you think about it. One his home is 'old gym', two the way he acts most likely he sadly is outcasted by society. Lady Redundant Woman, ok these are getting harder and harder for me dang it, but anyway rant aside. She maybe wants to leave it all behind after failed at finding love, failed at keeping a job and maybe some side effects of her powers + mental health. Mr. Big, easy one he is greedy, so chances are that he has no idea on the idea that money can't buy happiness. All he does is do anything he can to make himself richer, Without Leslie he most likely feel alone and start to lose it sense she is the only person we know to willing hangout with him. Now, the final one, Doctor Two-Brains himself what is the reason. Well, we are talking about two people here or one and an animal. The mouse and Professor Steven Boxleitner. Professor Steven Boxleitner is the one half that is fairly simple guess. He maybe after so tired of being controlled by a mouse and being used to hurt his own friend and do many evil deeds would just want it to end, for good. The mouse brain on the other hand, I am not so sure. I think after a while of failures he would just give up and want to escape the human body sense it would be easier to steal cheese as a mouse in my opinion when wordgirl is around that is. Also I loved what you did for the three villain kid characters and how you showed what made this childhood show so good.

AWWWW!! OH MY GOODNESS, YES YES I ADORE THIS! One of the key things I wished the show could have displayed more was the impact of being a hero had on Becky, and the amount of stress it causes her. It's always acknowledge of course, but seen more as an obstacle for her, rather than going in depth. This is a wonderful music video that shows off the concept. I love the Tobey part especially. Great work on the video. And it weirdly fits. In the show Becky/Wordgirl often suffer and sacrifice her happiness to help others. It would make sense that it would eventually get to her.
I've always headcanoned it as being something like Ultra Instinct Shaggy. She constantly keeps herself ratcheted down so that she doesn't kill literally everyone, but she can't pick and choose 'stats' to raise without raising everything. Which is why she can fight giant robots and toss meteors the size of small houses miles away in one episode, while not reducing anyone she punches to a fine mist, or, based on going from the moon to the Sun in the span of 5 seconds, turning the entire planet into forms of energy and matter not seen since the Big Bang. So if she wants to die, her powers will oblige and she'll be just as vulnerable as any normal human. Alternatively, it's like Deadpool or the Hulk, it's literally impossible for them to die outside of very specific weaknesses or cosmic beings. So yes, more tragic.

Becky's a good kid, and I know she struggles with living a normal and hero life. She saved so many people, though she has no one who'll save her. It's depressing knowing that you can't be saved, but we all have a hero, they'll show up last moment like the 3 did at the end. @@pastellaura2580 He was always talking about it. I was a teacher assistant for his class, and he and his two brothers all suffered from alarming mental health problems. They were taken from their parents (because of drugs or something) and they weren't exactly dealing with everything in a healthy way. His older third grade brother was well-known for his anger issues (fighting with other kids, punching a hole in the wall, etc) and his little kindergarten age brother was just a fucking psychopath. That kid was creepy af. This boy, the first grader, confided in me that the little brother would hurt him. He also had these HUGE dark circles, and he was prone to emotional breakdowns. So yeah, hearing him point to roofs and saying "I wanna jump off that" or him trying to crawl out the 2nd story window... it just all lined up. Despite all that, he was still really smart and I kept a special eye on him. (Though that's not saying much because I kept a close eye on all the students because hey, you never know who's gonna need the support.)
I am like sobbing and flooding the the entire room (not literally) I'm so glad they caught her and it's really like sad but heartwarming somewhere idk 😭😭

Can we just note of how clean the lineart is for this animatic considering it was so long?
Sometimes I think about what if the show had more focus on a group of specific main characters (in a way, technically they do, but I just think it’d be neat if over the course of the show Becky slowly gained normal kid allies who helped her with excuses and stuff or helped a little bit in battles or smth). So I think about who those characters may be and my for sure answers would be Tobey, Scoops, and Violet. There’s also thoughts of Victoria and Eileen though 🤔. But I just tended to notice the few times the four of them (them being Becky, Tobey, Scoops, and Violet) were in the same episode together so I thought it’d be neat to think of them as potential allies (reformed tobey anyone? Xkxnxn) They wouldn’t technically be a superhero team tbh. Just people who know about her secret identity and get to hang out with her a lot yknow lol
This is a popular wish/opinion actually from what I've seen! Personally, the villain "kiddie table" trio and the "scouting" four are my favorite groups in the show to think about/create stuff for. I even kinda ship Vibeckscoobey (with a reformed Tobey ofc)

I watched this show as a kid and even then I saw how much Becky was put through. I related to it. I saw how hard she tried to please everyone. I still do relate. This animatic, as much as it shouldn’t be, is a comfort for me. I had a bad suicidal phase for 2 years, and I only recently snapped out. This is healing.

Doctor Two-Brains, Chuck the Evil Sandwich-Making Guy, Lady Redundant Woman, Mr. Big, The Butcher, The Whammer and Ms Question all in the middle before tobey came in and each I want to try and make a guess on why they wanted to well. If you know this video and the song then you understand what they wanted to do. Anyway, Chuck is somewhat easy which is no matter how hard he tries, his mother will sadly seemly love his brother more than him and that's his reason. Ms Question I think is actually because of her power. For you see if she just wants to ask a question without hurting anyone and justs wants some help, people will panic the moment she does and think she is attacking getting her in trouble when she may just needed some help. The Butcher, when reading some of the things in his background and character, well it was hard to think of a reason, but I think it maybe because his family line with his father being a villian and how maybe he never got a choice and also with how he fails at speaking english so bad that people may bully him at times. The Whammer, tricky in a way, but when you think about it. One his home is 'old gym', two the way he acts most likely he sadly is outcasted by society. Lady Redundant Woman, ok these are getting harder and harder for me dang it, but anyway rant aside. She maybe wants to leave it all behind after failed at finding love, failed at keeping a job and maybe some side effects of her powers + mental health. Mr. Big, easy one he is greedy, so chances are that he has no idea on the idea that money can't buy happiness. All he does is do anything he can to make himself richer, Without Leslie he most likely feel alone and start to lose it sense she is the only person we know to willing hangout with him. Now, the final one, Doctor Two-Brains himself what is the reason. Well, we are talking about two people here or one and an animal. The mouse and Professor Steven Boxleitner. Professor Steven Boxleitner is the one half that is fairly simple guess. He maybe after so tired of being controlled by a mouse and being used to hurt his own friend and do many evil deeds would just want it to end, for good. The mouse brain on the other hand, I am not so sure. I think after a while of failures he would just give up and want to escape the human body sense it would be easier to steal cheese as a mouse in my opinion when wordgirl is around that is. Also I loved what you did for the three villain kid characters and how you showed what made this childhood show so good.

I've always headcanoned it as being something like Ultra Instinct Shaggy. She constantly keeps herself ratcheted down so that she doesn't kill literally everyone, but she can't pick and choose 'stats' to raise without raising everything. Which is why she can fight giant robots and toss meteors the size of small houses miles away in one episode, while not reducing anyone she punches to a fine mist, or, based on going from the moon to the Sun in the span of 5 seconds, turning the entire planet into forms of energy and matter not seen since the Big Bang. So if she wants to die, her powers will oblige and she'll be just as vulnerable as any normal human.
Alternatively, it's like Deadpool or the Hulk, it's literally impossible for them to die outside of very specific weaknesses or cosmic beings. So yes, more tragic.
