  • Singers would benefit from ensuring that the tongue root is resting against the front wall of the pharynx (throat) while inhaling and singing, as this will ensure that the tongue root isn't filling up the throat and compromising resonating space. Here is an imagery that might help. / singwisevocals

    This helped sooooo much you have no idea...I've been singing for a while (largely self taught) and always struggled with consistency.. This is soo amazing and is definitely a huge help. thank you.

    It's great to come back to this video after some time of assimilation re the vocal tract! I just rewatched all your open throat series at a better time in my training ( a lot of it re training!) so I can understand, and feel more now. And visualise the anatomy better. What would really help me tho in this video, would be you demonstrating going through some of the sounding of the vowels you suggest , after practising to adapt tongue root posture in silence.. actually maybe this is covered in your longer video I just spotted on managing tongue tension... off I go , continuing on my journey of video hopping on Singwise! ( meaning every one leads to another!) Great stuff they are! Thank you! 😃

      I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos. If you haven't already seen it, I posted a video last week that discusses tongue root tension.

    Hello! Thank you for all your great videos!
    I am not sure I understand what you mean by the "space between the front wall of the throat and the tongue root getting smaller"... In my mind, we want to get the tongue root away from the throat, not closer... Or maybe I misunderstood?
    Thank you :-)

    Ok so my objectove is to train the posterior part of the tongue, not for singin more for aestethic and health. Do i keep my mouth closed or open while performing the excercise ?

    Do you think that trying to maintain a gentle contact of the tip of the tongue against the bottom front teeth would help in achieving this tongue posture? Because if it did, this would be, for some people like me, a more direct background of tongue posture than that of trying to imaging a ball rolling back and forth. Just giuessing.

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  8 лет назад +2

      Yes and no. I do talk about keeping the tip of the tongue gently touching the backs of the lower front teeth. However, it's possible to have the tongue tip in this position and still have the tongue body and root retracting into the pharynx. This video focuses specifically on the tongue root's posture and explores an imagery to show the desirable action and posture, which may or may not work for some singers. (Some people do well with imagery, while others do not.) We have to find what works for us and resonates with us as individuals.

    When we look in the mirror for this tongue on imaginary ball exercise, what should we look for? Thank you!

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  8 лет назад

      Just a normal 'hump' - appropriate for the vowel - that doesn't looks as though it's too far back into the oropharynx.

    hay where can I start when bettering my voice ??

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  7 лет назад +1

      That's a tough question to answer without knowing where you're starting from. There are certainly fundamental skills that singers need to master - balancing the breath and the glottal resistance efforts and tuning the resonance effectively by singing the right vowel for the pitch. In some classical traditions, we would start with achieving the lift of the zygomatic muscles under the eyes (an inner smile). Then, we would start learning how to sing pure vowels - that is a vowel that is consistently produced from start to finish, and without any distortions (e.g., tongue root tension and retraction, undesirable modifications, etc.). The vowel and breath are EVERYTHING in singing. Feel free to send me (karyn@singwise.com) some samples of your singing so that I can maybe give you some more individualized guidance.

    In a short video such as this, you're better off demonstrating the technique yourself. This is just shows that you probably read this from a book and it doesn't work for you, but you still want to appear smart. I had to dislike this video I'm afraid, extremely disappointed with it. Honestly why didn't you just demonstrate it? It would have been about 5 seconds extra.
