I actually did this on a Technics 2 motor mechanism that was still good out of a tape deck that was dead. I powered the reel motor which also opened the door with a regulated supply and hooked a push button to the control selenoid, and when I was pressing it fast or holding it down or double tapping it If I recall correctly, I was able to change modes. What was fascinating though was that I was able to use all the features only with a simple switch, of course If you get the timing right. I also hooked up the head to another deck and recorded a cassette full of music as a test. Cheers :)

The fast record mode could be an option for when the deck is fitted to a unit with a high-speed dubbing facility.

This is the reason why the lower end logic mechas from Panasonic are so slow and clunky, it is all made by a function whee and a pulsing solenoidl. I had a 3 solenoid Sharp RT350 Deck and this was rocket in comparison. I guess trying to save some penies on the solenoids. I gets worse end of life tape mechas ... those ara CRAP. Two motors decks from Panasonic are way better and less clunkier ...
