    The females could very well be his daughters as The Boss has sired almost 70% of the grizzly population in Banff National Park.
    His brother Split Lip isn't so lucky..
    And you must wonder how Split Lip got his name. The Boss gave it to him. I have personally seen both these Majestic creatures in Banff along the Banff Parkway.

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  3 года назад +9

      The males have that huge growing spurt where they go from a decent size to big. Some it takes longer or they never really have it. A lot of this hinges on them being able to attain large amounts of proteins, and if they are able to get to the carcasses before the larger more dominant bears do. If they aren't good at hunting or aggressive in claiming kills from wolves, cougars and other bears, they will never become one of the big ones.

      Guess it has to be pretty sturdy if it's going to hang on a bear that size, and I'm not sure there is a huge market for it so they would put piles of money on the R&D to a newer model.

    The female looks like bear 104 but I can’t say I’ve seen the male, he’s massive!

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  3 года назад +2

      It is GB# 104, the male is GB# 157. When they become big like this you hardly ever see them, they keep to themselves and are very elusive. With that said, there are no resident males in the same area as her. He comes from a long way out for mating season and only hits the area up every other year at times. To get big like this he may be finding crops or livestock as well, a lot of males just disappear if you know what I am saying.

  • @karupt422
    @karupt422 2 года назад

    Why do male bears avoid areas with people?

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  2 года назад

      Right from day one male bears have to learn how to be elusive to avoid other bears to survive. They stay offgrid and in the shadows and avoid human activity especially the older they get, and usually only get seen on camera or if a female draws them out into the open during mating season, and even so are very weary.

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  3 года назад +4

      He hadn't hit his growing spurt yet. Many people have misled info on bears thinking they are all 1000 pound animals. A mature female interior grizzly emerges out of the den around 250 pounds, and by den time in the fall hovers around 400. This male needed to get on quality food sources but most likely couldn't get to them due to bigger more dominant bears. But in this calendar year, he did, and his growth was huge, most likely cutting his den time down to find carcasses. The big males will emerge in the spring high four hundred to 600 pounds and bulk up to 7-800 pounds.

    Love most of this, except for the vehicle disturbing them, and the collars.
    It's always been difficult to imagine that the bear I'm looking at is living a wild, natural life,
    when there is a gigantic collar around their neck. Seems excessive, when there are better methods available.
    How can a reclusive boar, like this, not be apprehensive after detecting your presence? Much too close.
    Your weight measurement seems to be off, by a lot...his head weighed 206 lbs. when viewed in the trailer.
    Did you actually ask animal workers of their weight, or are you guessing?
    Any information written by noted scientists tell that cubs are a minimum 350 lbs. when they are 3-years old..
    You stated that this bear was 206 lbs., at 7-8 years of age. Something is wrong here. Could it be...you?

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  3 года назад +4

      He was 206lbs first thing in the spring, I was there, even helped weigh him. He bulked up over that season and got serious weight gain. Some males take longer to acquire that huge growing spurt, much depending on their food sources. 3 year old interior grizzlies are 150lbs in the spring and up to 300 prior to den. The following season with the female that was his age. As for being close, I was 75+ meters away as I was doing my rounds, this was within a populated area. As soon as I realized the male was there with one of the resident females I shut my truck off. As you can see I didn't linger and left, unfortunately we drive vehicles. With millions of tourists, many to see bears, you have to monitor, manage, both bears and the people.
