Timestamps would be good, took me far too long skipping through the video to try and find which was which after the first test, wasn't at the end! Test results are at 8:00 for those like me! Interesting video Scott, enjoyed it!
Comment 3 of 3: So I was correct on both! Again, there was never a shred of doubt on my part on test 1. It was immediately apparent as that one is not even close at all. Test 2, however, I knew would be close, but I'm a little surprised by how difficult it was for me. Even knowing what the distinctions were going into it, waxier and more articulate vs fatter and chunkier, I still had to listen more than once. They are close enough that it was not immediately obvious to me. And I suppose that weighs a lot into the question of the viability of a J neck as a P surrogate. Coming into this, I always felt like the J neck was an imperfect, but roughly proximate, and therefore generally viable surrogate. Seeing how much I struggled on the blind listen even with knowing the telltale differences only makes me even more committed to that view. I still would much rather have both a P and a J, because no, the J stand-in is not a 100% perfect surrogate. But if I could only have one, I'd go J without a second's hesitation, because a J can get respectably close to the P sound, where a P (unless we're talking PP, which is an interesting, but wholly other conversation), can't do the same in reverse. Anyway, cool vid, and congrats to the winners (even though that was almost 2 1/2 years ago)! :-) Cheers!
I recently had my only bass stolen and have been looking in Pawn shops for an unrealistically cheap Fender Jazz -- nothing like a college budget to go off of. I'm hoping to have one of those Geddy Lee moments which stopped occurring after the Internet where you walk in and find some amazing bass that you use for the rest of your life. Anyway thanks for the videos they've really helped the learning process a lot.
The P bass naturally has this “big dog bark” (the best I can do to explain it, lol) when you lean into it, especially on the D and G strings so it’s easy to pick out. One thing I did notice is with these 2 basses in particular, maybe it’s the instruments themselves or their setups but the J definitely had a bit of a fatter bottom end to it. Still, great video Scott, keep ‘em coming!
I'm guessing bass 1 is the jazz bass. It seems to have a little more clarity in the high and low, while 2 is punchier in the middle, which is what I would expect from the pickup locations. Though I did go back and forth a couple times.
Great videos. (signed up for the emails and toolkit already.) Glad to see the differences between P bass and J bass covered. Now that leaves the following other types: Concert and the j/p bass types. Short-Short version is fine unless you really feel like a video/podcast would be more fun. :D
I have a 50% success rate at these, so here we go: Test A: J-bass was Bass 2, open highs and solid bottom end. Bass 1 was more mid heavy. Test B: J-bass was Bass 1, similar reasoning OK, so, I'm ready to get schooled...
the best way i can describe a jazz bass and a precision bass is 1 sounds like "POOMF" (precision bass) and the other sounds like "FWOOMP" (jazz bass) when you let the string hit the frets along with the notes you can really tell "POOMF" apart from "FWOOMP" Bass #1 P bass Bass#2 J bass for both tests
I was wrong on both--the good thing is it doesn't matter as much as I think it did and I just need to focus on learning more. I have a Squier PJ and that's really all I need for now.
Okay for test #2, I immediately thought bass #1 was the jazz, but was surprised on the lack of differences I thought I would hear. So to answer your question of "for test #2, which is the jazz bass", I'm going with bass #1. Enjoyed this video, btw. If I had to ask for videos, I would ask for a weekly video specifically for that week's practice. Nothing long, just something as a warm up to my regular practice, and learning something about music theory along the way. And maybe with a challenge of sorts like this one.
I love how you come into conclusions about ungratefulness. It was a simple misconception issue. I missed the part which he explained that he will give some away in the academy. mi recomendación es empezar por un jazz que es masversatil y logra acercarse mas a un p de lo que un p puede a un jazz. aunque el sonido de un buen p es unido meloso hermoso he irrepetible con un jazz
I'm 2 years late but this video confirms that I do like the jazz bass better even in the situation where they purposely try to confuse the ears. I got 2 for 2, gonna go out and buy a jazz bass now. Super helpful video.
Test A: Bass 1: P Bass. Bass 2: J Bass -- correct Test B: Bass 1: J Bass. Bass 2: P Bass -- wrong Ok, you have a point... there are intersections between P and J bass tones.
I got both right and I don’t even play bass😂😂😂. I’m a guitar player lol. I always felt like P bass has some some extra punch. Second test was kind of harder and i need 3 takes to decide which was what. Awesome video man keep up!
Good vid...well-recorded and well-played. So many comparisons feature... 'less than stellar' recording or playing or both. I have one Jazz bass with Aguilar AG-4J Hot Noiseless pickups and one with Model Js and below about the 7th fret, it's very pretty difficult to tell them apart from a P bass. Above about the 10th fret or so, it gets easier but for folks that say you can't make a Jazz bass sound like a P bass, I'm afraid they aren't wanting to make a Jazz bass sound like a P bass.
Thanks for the video. I’m a guitarist looking to get a cheapish bass in one of these two styles. I would have failed the tests, bust after the reveal I knew I like the sound of the J bass better in both trials. Cheers.
I'm a huge P bass fan. I knew from the first few notes which one the P bass was. For some reason, whenever I hear a jazz, it almost makes me recoil. I don't HATE jazz basses, but when I hear a precision, something inside me says "oh yes...that's the one.." and I immediately know.
As a guitarist I'm not as sure about bass tones, so I wasn't very confident, was pretty unsure about my guesses. Pleased to say I got them both right! All of which just leaves me wanting to get a P-bass even more than I already did...
Test A was obvious as jazz basses normally have a scooped sound when both pick ups are turned up, but test B got me, the jazz neck pick up seemed abit brighter than the p bass
i got test A right cause of the brighter tone of the jazz bass, but test 2 was really close, actually you fooled me. Nice video Scott all the way from Venezuela
I guessed both tests correctly. I have one of each and I use the neck pickup on the J bass to get close to a P bass sound when I can only travel with one bass and I need the versatility of the J bass. I should mention that my P is a Mike Lull and my J is an MTD Beast.
Before looking at the results part, here are my calculated guesses : Test A : Bass 1 - P-bass, Bass 2 - Jazz bass Test B : Bass 1 - P-bass, Bass 2 - Jazz bass The P-bass just has a distinctive low-end rumble, while the jazz bass has a slightly more balanced, articulate tone, imo. Love both, of course. Thanks for the brilliant video, Scott!
The giveaway in test B was the playing style more than the tone; in his other Jazz v P bass video he said himself that he plays differently when he's holding a jazz bass. If he played the J bass with less funk/the way he plays P bass he could've made them sound more similar.
In test two the P-bass have more punch and low mids.. The jazz bass neck only pickup goes deeper but less punchy low mids.. That how I hear the difference between neck only jazz and a P-bass.. But with a 10 band EQ I could probably increase the low mid and make the neck jazz pickup more punchy...
Being wrong on test B, along with some other observations I made recently, led to the J bass no longer being my favorite. Kinda sad, but learning is good.
I was indecisive whether to purchase a p bass or J bass, but after watching this video, I prefer the sound of the J bass. Thank you. Time to purchase my very first bass!!!
The first one is simple: 1. Preci, 2. Jazz. I think in the 2nd test it's vice versa. OK, I was wrong, but that shows me, that I don't really need a P, because my Jazz sounds almost like a P on the neck pickup...
I got both tests, well, I do own a few of each by Fender. As for the Sires, I'm glad they went to guys who don't have access to a lot of stuff. (Y) Been playing my 51 P-bass Reissue more lately. Just diggin the vintage thump and pop.
Ha! I got it listening through only my tiny iPhone speaker! And I don't even own a P or Jazz bass. For Test A, I was listening for the characteristic scooped sound of two pickups running together to guess the Jazz bass. For Test B, I listened for the brighter open sound of a single coil to guess the Jazz, which leaves the P by process of elimination.
For the test A, there is a lot of difference between the basses when I'm listening on my headphones. The first bass is definitely the P-bass, it's got the thump and a little "telephone" sound. The second one is the Jazz Bass, with a little scoop in the mids and different, burpy attack.
Nice seventies-style break there! In the test B the differences were a bit more subtle. Negligible in the mix, I would say, but on their own one could still tell the difference. Bass one is the Jazz, bass two is the Precision. The identity of these instruments lie in the attack of the tone. The Precision has the thump.
I'm shouting that... Test A - Bass 1 P-Bass and Bass 2 That STUNNING Jazz Test B - Definitely Interesting as I had to put headphones on to hear it but I'm saying that Bass 1 is that P-Bass - has a lil more Mid grunt and Bass 2 is the Jazz with the tone open - although close to call on my ears! If I win and get a call on the Sire's I love the P-J prease! :P
Even if you don't know which one is the P or the J it's easy to tell that bass 2 is the same on both tests. The action is lower and the frets buzz more
Hi scot, i am a HUGE FAN of your videos. I am really enjoying it and it really helped me a lot on my bass playing. Only one thing, can you please increase the volume of your mic a tad? Please. 😅 cause there are videos that are somewhat hard to listen to due to the volume. Well hope you address this. Keep rocking man!
Jazz base, #2. (I always get these guessing games wrong.) They sounded a little different, but not much to my ear. Both sounded like bass guitars to me. I got lucky and guessed right this time.
For test A I would say that the 2nd bass was the jazz bass because it sounded a bit woolier and had less attack, I would say the same for the second test.
with a little bit of eq'ing I think you can get real close between the neck of a jazz and the single pup on the P-bass.. To get a more P-bass like sound from the jazz neck,, take of a little high end, (the single coil pickup has more highs than the hum bucking P bass pickup) roll off a little of the lowest lows (50Hz) , (humbuckers compress a little the outer frequencies) ) and add a little more low mids. ...
Test A - I'm pretty sure bass #1 is the precision bass and #2 is the jazz bass.Test B - Bass #1 sounds identical to bass #1 from test A; bass 2 sounds a little brighter. I'm not sure, but I think nothing was changed between the two tests, short of cutting the bridge pickup on the jazz bass. Results Reaction - I KNEW IT!!!!
Right off the bat after you played a couple of notes on bass #1 in test A, I said to myself that sounds like a pbass. So, I'm going with bass #1 is the pbass, and bass #2 is the jazz. Knowing me, I've got that wrong. So to answer your question of "for test A, which one was the jazz bass?" . I say bass #2
test nr B was really difficult cuz i always keep the jazz on both pickups wide open (though i dont own a jazz yet), but my guess is bass nr 1 is the P , bass 2 was the jazz
Test A (both pickups on jazz bass) 4:07
Test B (only neck pickup) 6:23
Test result 8:00
Giveaway winners 10:06
Christian Odenwald thank you xD
Thanks for saving me the jibber jabber.
Bass one i sound more full and has more depth
While bass 2 has more of a passive sound
thank you omg
Thank you

Well...
Scott didn't you say you would give away all 7 of the Sire Basses? Why only pick 3 winners for 3 basses????
Ghosthawk He's been saying that some basses will go toward the Academy members.
Thanks for clarifying.
Crimmy...the guy is giving away basses...and folks start complaining about how many?! I appreciate your generosity, Scott!
I love how you come into conclusions about ungratefulness.
It was a simple misconception issue. I missed the part which he explained that he will give some away in the academy.
He had 7 basses and he said he would give them all away, and then he only chose 3 winners for 3 basses. So my thought was that he went back on his word.
After Regine clarified all the information for me, the misconception disappeared and saw my mistake.

Hey, Scott! Great video! I was wondering if you could do a test between a Jazz Bass bridge pickup and a PJ Bass bridge pickup. Cheers!
Thank you - now I know I want a jazz bass. Very helpful vid!
I'm 2 years late but this video confirms that I do like the jazz bass better even in the situation where they purposely try to confuse the ears. I got 2 for 2, gonna go out and buy a jazz bass now. Super helpful video.
Test A: Bass 1: P Bass. Bass 2: J Bass -- correct
Test B: Bass 1: J Bass. Bass 2: P Bass -- wrong
Ok, you have a point... there are intersections between P and J bass tones.

I REALLY wanna know how you had the pickups set on the Jazz bass for that tone! 50/50?
Good vid...well-recorded and well-played. So many comparisons feature... 'less than stellar' recording or playing or both. I have one Jazz bass with Aguilar AG-4J Hot Noiseless pickups and one with Model Js and below about the 7th fret, it's very pretty difficult to tell them apart from a P bass. Test B :
Bass 1 : Jazz Bass
Bass 2 : P Bass

Feck I've got it wrong
The J Bass just seemed to have more gravitas. Just a real satisfying low end that hits the spot.
wow AWESOME!!thanks Scott
I'm a huge P bass fan. I knew from the first few notes which one the P bass was. For some reason, whenever I hear a jazz, it almost makes me recoil. I don't HATE jazz basses, but when I hear a precision, something inside me says "oh yes...that's the one.." and I immediately know.
Like the trailer. Also, thanks for the opportunity with the giveaway
As a guitarist I'm not as sure about bass tones, so I wasn't very confident, was pretty unsure about my guesses. Pleased to say I got them both right!
All of which just leaves me wanting to get a P-bass even more than I already did...
They are different, indeed. Neck J pickup seems a little bit punchier than P bass, which is more midrange, in my opinion.
What do you think about?
Test A was obvious as jazz basses normally have a scooped sound when both pick ups are turned up, but test B got me, the jazz neck pick up seemed abit brighter than the p bass
This video backs up my thought that jazz bass suits me better than p bass. Thanks Scott for making this comparison video.
The dead giveaway on P-bass tone vs J-bass tone are the lows. The neck pickup on the Jazz sounds like the bass frequency was rolled off.
i got test A right cause of the brighter tone of the jazz bass, but test 2 was really close, actually you fooled me.
Before looking at the results part, here are my calculated guesses :
Test A : Bass 1 - P-bass, Bass 2 - Jazz bass
Test B : Bass 1 - P-bass, Bass 2 - Jazz bass
The P-bass just has a distinctive low-end rumble, while the jazz bass has a slightly more balanced, articulate tone, imo.
Love both, of course. Thanks for the brilliant video, Scott!
bass 1 is jazz bass and bass 2 precision bass
I think bass1 is P,bass2 is Jazz!Test A is clearly, and test B is little difficult...but Jazz bass neck pickup sound is thinner than Pbass one.
congratulations winners! Badass
Guys, which one do you recommend getting? Been playing guitars (classical, acoustic, electric) for 20 years but recently really got into playing bass.
I can say at 4:41 bass 1 : fender pb, bass2, jb. Way easier then the sire vs jazz.
The giveaway in test B was the playing style more than the tone; in his other Jazz v P bass video he said himself that he plays differently when he's holding a jazz bass. If he played the J bass with less funk/the way he plays P bass he could've made them sound more similar.
Where do you go. To see the bass giveaway winners
Test B: P-bass = #1. For the record I am one of those guys who finds the P-bass and J-bass neck pickups similar sounding.
Being wrong on test B, along with some other observations I made recently, led to the J bass no longer being my favorite. Kinda sad, but learning is good.
I'm a guitarist. But everytime I see one of your videos, it makes me pick up a bass :) Great stuff!
I was indecisive whether to purchase a p bass or J bass, but after watching this video, I prefer the sound of the J bass. Thank you. Time to purchase my very first bass!!!
Jazz bass kills. Love that tone.
The first one is simple: 1. Preci, 2. Jazz.
I think in the 2nd test it's vice versa.
OK, I was wrong, but that shows me, that I don't really need a P, because my Jazz sounds almost like a P on the neck pickup...

Is there still time to enter the competition? When's the deadline? Many thanks.
GIveaway is now closed, winners are announced tomorrow!
Is it true studio recording engineers request the P bass consistently? P bass comes off in a recording better?
I don't play or have any idea which is which. I like the sound of the 2nd one for both tests.
Ha! I got it listening through only my tiny iPhone speaker! And I don't even own a P or Jazz bass. For Test A, I was listening for the characteristic scooped sound of two pickups running together to guess the Jazz bass.
Great, i prefer the sound of the jazz on the first test, but neck pickup only the P sounded best.
Guess I need a PJ...
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Jazz base, #2. (I always get these guessing games wrong.) They sounded a little different, but not much to my ear. Both sounded like bass guitars to me. I got lucky and guessed right this time.
I think the best way to describe the difference is that jazz basses have more of a vibrant, fretty tone while p basses have more of a solid one.
Congrats to the winners!!!
In both, bass 1 - P bass, bass 2 - J bass. You can hear the Jazz by the high peaks.
the diference i notice is,Precision bass:smooth attack but with more gain.Jazz Bass:More clean sound and more attack.
For test A I would say that the 2nd bass was the jazz bass because it sounded a bit woolier and had less attack, I would say the same for the second test.
Sweet, I got both right!
with a little bit of eq'ing I think you can get real close between the neck of a jazz and the single pup on the P-bass..
Test A: Bass 1: Jazz Bass; Bass 2: P-Bass
Test B: Bass 1: P-Bass; Bass 2: JazzBass
Test A: Jazz is bass 2
Test B: Same, Jazz is bass 2.
P bass has more mid-range growl, Jazz has a cleaner bottom end presence.
I think if you roll off a bit of the Tone form the J neck pickup, you may get something very close to the P on the same test.
Picked them both correctly in both tests! Nice! Actually thought 2nd test was easier...
test nr B was really difficult cuz i always keep the jazz on both pickups wide open (though i dont own a jazz yet), but my guess is bass nr 1 is the P , bass 2 was the jazz
Bass 1
I play a jazz and I always used the neck pup for a p sound, test B shows how close it is.
AHHH What a knucklehead! I commented to enter the giveaway but didnt realize there was a pick already haha. I'm catching up, slow but sure :P
In test B I think that the first bass is the jazz, and 2 is the P.
Even if I am right, in the mix you won't notice a difference though.
Thanks to this video, I realised that soundwise, I actually like the Jazz more.
