I've jumped out of airplanes over 5 times higher than this...but I had a parachute. This video gave me sweaty palms and feet just watching it. There's no way in HELL that I'd do this day in and day out for work. Thank you to those who climb those towers. ESPECIALLY just to change a freaking light bulb.
That light bulb can be the difference between life and death for pilots and passengers. And without these towers, numerous modern conveniences with wireless transmission technology (well, some are aging) would be less feasible, maybe even not possible. But, yeah, I get dizzy watching it. Perfectly fine flying a plane, though.
How do we not have robots to do this job yet? I wouldn't climb that tower of death even if I was getting chased by a penis nosed monster with spider legs and there was no other way to escape. I'd let that foul creature lay eggs in my abdomen then happily give birth to his arcane children while they used me as their first meal. I don't even know what these tall ass fucking poles are used for but if my boy had one I'd at least try to bounce on it lol give a like if you’re big money and don’t forget ted cruz dreams to escape the nightmare that is his life.
Remember kids, whenever climbing a 1700 foot tall transmission tower, never forget to wear your safety helmet. There is no amount of money, that could get me to what these guys do. No matter what they are paid, they deserve a HUGE raise. Amazing and scary work.
Justin Huntington just to add, I think there’s also a heavy ass tool bag clipped to his person... any small weight transfer and he could’ve easily fall off.. that person is brave!
When he gets to the top and reaches to unscrew his carabiner, HE LETS GO, HE ISN'T HOLDING ONTO ANYTHING! On top of a 1700ft tower, swaying all over the place and with the wind trying to dislodge you at any opportunity. I have nothing but respect for these guys. If you ever think you've had a bad commute, thing again...
It makes me feel uneasy watching that, it's like when I first went out on a tiny boat at sea and I looked over the side expecting not to see anything, then realising I could see a huge depth and a forest of tall seaweed swaying back and forth.
This crazy guy is wearing cowboy boots!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I just love how the tower gets smaller and less stable looking the higher he goes. The last bit to the top looked about as sturdy as a fence post with 8 inch nails drilled into the sides all attached to the tower. Then he stands on the top with no room, only for his buddy to join them. Forget this job.
That last part where he climbed up the pole which was separate from the main tower looked flimsy as heck. I would be scared it wasn't going to take my weight...and then the other bloke turned up. I'd be shouting "get away fron me! Get down! It can't take the weight of both of us! Argh!" Lol.
"Free climbing" still uses protection devices, tho - just not the ones fixed to the structure all the way, which you can stay attached to all the time (or most of the time) you spend on the tower. The way they do it is literally asking for trouble, this exact movie have even been used by OSHA to show how not to do it.

Do you wake up in the night screaming? I used to be a roofer and I would wake up screaming from a nightmare where I fell off a home. Couldn't imagine this
I've helped my brother roofing, by no means did it as a source of income so I wouldn't have nightmares, but I could do roofing heights (no where above 3 stories, fuck that) but at least if you fall from four stories you're barely going to have time to scream, you fall from this bitch and you're going to pass out and wake up again before you hit the ground from all the screaming.
Ive climbed / worked on several towers, up to 100'....and they seem tall. 1700 ft?! Insanity! How he can free climb at that height blows my mind. My rule is, anything over 12', clipped in at all times with 2 clips....so even when moving a clip your always clipped in. Also, when he "rests" he slips the clip over one of the climbing supports....a fall would easily bend that support straight and the clip would slide right off.
Serious question, but would it be that tough to install anchor points and permanent lines (that get replaced incrementally due to weathering/degredation) for these guys to clip into? I feel like allowing them to free climb is just an unnecessary risk that could be mitigated with not too much larger an investment of time and money.
From Wikipedia: LED-based lamps have a significantly longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs, thus reducing maintenance costs and increasing reliability. Of course, a lot of these guys would then be out of a job. Also a LOT of people make the "I forgot the bulb" comment. Time for new material.
They should be required to wear a wingsuit when climbing that. Parachutes probably won't work with all those obstacles around, so they would still die, but they could have some fun on the way down.
My buddy and I used to climb the water tower in town when we were kids. We thought that was pretty hot stuff; 90 feet. I would hug the ladder all the way up to the catwalk. Just watching this was scarier than climbing that water tower.
Watching the video made my weiner retract and the rest of me break out in a sweat. There is not enough money you could pay me to go up to the top of that even once. It's effing crazy. Anyone who can do this is one hell of a lot braver or crazier than I am. Respect.
Why aren't parachutes in the regulation? That way if they do fall they have at least some chance of stabilizing and pulling the chute. Or just using to to get back down to the ground.
100% wouldnt work and that means they would have to carry an extra 50+ pounds ontop of the 30lbs there already carrying whch would make it even unsafer to do the climb normally thats why
I've seen this video many times, and I appreciate the poster (SternumMagnum) updating it with info about how freeclimbing is now an OSHA violation. I've known many telecom workers who claimed that their jobs fall under an OSHA exemption written for linemen that said that they did not have to be tied off. This was never true for telecom tower climbers. This exemption NEVER applied to anyone but linemen, and OSHA has even gotten rid of that exemption. EVERYONE more than six feet off the ground must be tied off 100% if there are no protective rails on a structure... period. Even when the climber in this video ties off (connects his lanyard to a footpeg) he does it in a very foolish way. I wonder if he is still alive... idiot. Oh, and a tower with guy wires is a guyed tower, not a gided or guided tower like the video editor typed on the screen.
I rather think that the design of this tower was poorly made for future reparations. Should at least have a ladder on the outside, after the ladder on the inside . And each footpeg to have reinforced safety clip, so they could strap properly on . Small simple solutions to increase the safety are missing... I would never in a million years climb this thing without a parachute, and a paycheck the size of the tower it self.
Free climbing=stupidity. If I ever found out a crew was doing free climbing, it would be the end of their career! DON'T DO IT! This video is wrong, wrong wrong!
+Kevin McLogan Totally agree. I've been up ladders and on building sites for over forty years - never had a problem. I fell off a ladder twenty feet up four months ago and I'm still wearing the orthotic boot and I'm seriously lucky. I'm told I will probably always limp. I now have a full body harness and arrest lanyard now, even for what most people would consider a 'low' height. A five foot fall can kill, or cripple you. I think we do things and because they work out OK, we tend to think of that practice as normal, or safe, but it isn't. Nobody uses harnesses on properly secured ladders, except Sky & BT engineers (UK), but now I know why they always do. A fall, my first and hopefully last, really made it sink in.
