Really cool that a town would have so many historical places and loved hearing the details of each one. The drone footage was awesome by the way!!! Good job Susie, very well done!!! ❤
We had a list of 33 items to choose from including the GM Plant and the Bicycle Paying Card factory. We chose not to use those two for this video as most people knew about those two sites. However, we do plan to shoot one if not two more similar videos in Norwood and plan to use both of those sites. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@historyinyourownbackyard2363you shouldn’t ASSUME anything!!! I’ve lived in Cincinnati my entire 68 years and I’m STILL discovering things and places in Cincinnati I never knew about! That’s why I subscribed to your channel. 🤦🏻♀️
I have always lived within 5 to 7 miles from Norwood, Ohio. Used to work on Highland Ave and passed under the B&O tracks every single day and never knew about the rich history of the city. Big into history and nature so definitely going to be checking it out. Thank you History in your own backyard!!!
I grew up in Norwood.. ask me anything.. I know every nook and cranny about that place..... I've partied in those over passes you showed, old tunnels.. also used to party in the now closed up subway tunnels under the old Zumbial Box plant right next to Water Works Park (Shea Stadium)... I know areas of that town that nobody knows about unless you're in your 80s and 90s.. the police and city council don't even know about these areas to this day... some are within the city limits and others are just right outside and very hidden.... I've spelunk the drainage tunnels and other tunnels over near Oakley.. I walked the drainage ditch/tunnels all the way up to Madeira and Milford to other spots to party off of Woosrer Pike..,... I know my grandparents spots to party when they were kids which are still there to this day.... very hidden areas but I keep those spots to myself.. was down there drinking a few beers just last summer by myself.. We were partying kids.. we liked to explore the little tiny city and look for new places to drink beer and have a good time and play some music..
Norwood used to be a great neighborhood with a lot blue collar workers. You could walk down the streets in the evenings and say hello to neighbors and feel safe. Now it's not safe to walk in the daytime. I never knew about the tunnels; it's one of their best kept secrets.
Bonus! #11 Worst streets in Hamilton county. Home of the largest pothole known to man! Come and see! But make sure you have your vehicles suspension inspected before and after you visit! See ya soon!
can't remember if it was when i went to norwood view or north norwood but which ever we had field trips to lindner park was pretty cool. that was in the 80s
I went to View, and my 6th grade teacher had worked at Lindner Park before teaching full time (he was a substitute filling in while the lady who was supposed to be our teacher finished up her maternity leave, but during that time she elected to be a stay-at-home mom, so he became our teacher.) Anyway, he took us on a field trip to Lindner Park and gave us the grand tour of the place. Quite the hidden gem.
I remember as a kid, my parents told me that Norwood, OH was one of the largest cities completely surrounded by another city in the world. Don't know if that was by area or population. Do you know this to be true?
I've lived in Norwood my entire life only two houses from the historical Floral and Hudson home. I've always been fascinated by that house and living so close for over 50 years, it was awesome to see it pictured in this vid.
My hometown. Loved the drone footage of The former Mount St. Mary’s Catholic Seminary which has been lovingly remodeled now called Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Conference Center. I am so glad someone stepped up to preserve something of such significant and serious historical value. I lived right around the corner as a child and it was always shrouded in mystery. I longed to go inside to see what was hidden there. I finally got my chance recently. It is open to the public for tours as its being used as a retreat and conference space. Fantastic architecture, artwork and gardens. A hidden gem in the middle of Norwood for sure.
I grew up in Norwood from 1965 to 1981 on Atlantic ave. Which doesn't exist anymore. My great Grandpa, Dad and 1 of my uncles are worked for Norwood Fire Dept. I went to Sharpsburg primary and elementary schools also Norwood junior high till my freshman year. Moved to Anderson my sophomore year. There is still alot i remember from my childhood there ! Including the Old firehouse that used to be CO1 Next to city hall along with alot more! Thanks for the video!
Ah Norwood. So historic, so gentrified. Grandparents and great grandparents lived for over 50 years on Elsmere, cousin went to that Williams street elementary, mom went to Norwood high. Still remember when showcase cinemas was there off paddock, and Gold Circle was across from what used to be John Nolan Ford. I think one neat thing you missed on was the original home of the Bicycle Playing Card company there off Kenilworth and Beech. Parents were even married at the Immaculate Conception church!
There was so much that we had to leave out. We are seriously consindering doing another video on Norwood due to the number of historic sites and stories.
My husband and I had our wedding reception at the VFW building and right by that there was a UDF (no longer there) my sil and I used to work at. This was back in 2008. I got robbed at that UDF.
Graffiti is vandalism. Vandalism is a felony. I wish more younger folks understood that. Vandals, especially those who deface historical artifacts including buildings, structures etc, should be dealt with harshly - financial restitution, community service and in some cases, incarceration. Once historical artifacts have been defaced, they can never regain their original patina. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but it's true, and I'm sure many will agree. Thanks for video. Fascinating.
11:50, St. Matthew is where I went to grade school in the mid-80s! I suspect it is no longer a Catholic Church or school anymore. Thank you for the footage of my home town!
The Cincinnati subway WAS slated to run through Norwood, but my understanding is that the only underground part was the part under Central Parkway and some branch tunnels downtown. The rest of the system was to run above ground. I would be very interested in learning more about these other tunnels.
@@davidneman6527 did some research. the tunnel used to run under the Zumbiel Packing building along Norwood lateral. The company moved to Hebron 10+ years ago and the building razed in 2017. Not certain if the tunnel still exists.
I worked at a bakery in Norwood. In 1979 a black lady from the EPA came to visit. This was during broad daylight. He was called names and her car was egged.
There is a section of Norwood with some truly awesome old houses. Some of them are being brought back to life, but a lot are rental properties and losing their beauty (tis the case in most of Cincinnati). Come on billionaires! Spend some of that $ in Cincinnati and restore all of the structures that our people poured blood, sweat, and tears over in the area's hay day!

I loved going through that spooky tunnel as a kid on our way to shop for appliances at Swallen's.
Nice Video! A mention of the massive parking garage that exists on Montgomery which served the General Motors plant would have been cool.
Maybe in the next video we do on Norwood!
I was wondering why that was left out.

There's about a dozen such cities in the Unied States but I'm not sure if Norwood is the largest.
I heard Norwood was so populated that it was a City inside the City of Cincinnati!
Hamtramck, Michigan is completely surrounded by Detroit and at present is more populous than Norwood.
