    Love these alternatives!! Another alternative I like for 'very poor' is 'penniless' and I think it's quite an easy one to remember, i.e. someone without even a penny to spend.

    I'm an English teacher by profession and I really like to pump up my speaking skills and vocabulary and always encourage my students to do the same..
    I think you're a great teacher yourself, and I could just go on listening to you, without getting bored!
    I totally agree with you that "very" good English isn't good English at all... Thank you for the vast array of colourful words you've made use of to replace "very" , a redundant word which actually doesn't help.

    In dictionary, I looked up the word "agast" but no result is found. I suppose the word she was refering to should be "aghast." Thank you for this invaluable lesson, though!
