I'll have to say this was one of the nicest working experiences, thanks to Steve, Brent and Ron, and the all-around PLANNING AHEAD, the lack of which, otherwise, makes film-making an all too often emotionally ---and financially---exhausting mess. Correction: Unless I misspoke in the interview, or it was re-edited (I've never seen it myself) it was my brother who started to have his shirt smoke from the heat---it was from the 10K lights that we had to pound onto the scale sets to simulate sunlight believably indoors. Two or three things for the record: We had to turn down the first sequel, unfortunately, but had some fun getting back "down to earth"---the dirt, actually---for TREMORS 4, which was a big challenge financially, but great to work with those guys again. Also, some of the shots of the worm as a fast-moving hump in the ground were done in miniature (including the first shot you show here), and some were done full-scale. Finally--and again just for the record: Really prefer to lose that pejorative-sounding description "low tech". That term was pretty much replaced by terms like practical effects, or in-camera effects. Nice to hear this film DID turn out to be a success and is still remembered. It was one of the more satisfying films to work on, and we all felt it deserved a decent reception. It, to me, shared some of the "like-ability" quotient with the far bigger film that also balanced humor in telling its fantastical story, GALAXY QUEST (not making a quality comparison, just that they both turned out to have that interesting balance between straight storytelling and humor without lapsing into farce or spoof.) Thanks for the video!
@@TheUnapologeticGeek You're welcome. Enjoyed the coverage in that touched on all of the film's aspects. (Btw, sure didn't seem like Kevin was in any down frame of mind during this. We screened some of the dailies in the back of a small town restaurant there and he sat on the floor like the rest of us---very informal---and seemed cool with everything. I believe Kyra was there too. We didn't know her at the time, but wound up doing HEART AND SOULS with her , and with the same people a couple of years later...which turned out to be one of our all-time favorite movies.)
People say BTTF is a perfect film and I agree. I also think Tremors is - especially when you consider it was a massive studio budget. I think it’s perfect for what it is. Cast is amazing. Comedy. Concept. A few moments off terror. Suspense. I’ve always thought a big budget remake with amazing effects would happen.
Thank you so much for having me "drop by!" Excellent video and analysis. I cannot believe I didn't catch that Mindy Sterngood, was played by Ariana Richards, aka Lex Murphy in Jurassic Park! I guess I should turn in my 90s credentials!
@@NoMarketMedia I think my first time seeing Tremors would have been playing on USA up all night or TNT. I don't think I saw the beginning until years later and it finally clicked that it was a horror comedy. I always assumed it was a straight horror movie.
@@IMissThe1990s My grandparents rented it way back when it came out on video because it had Reba in it! We snuck out as younglings and got super freaked by the underground monsters. My grandparents were not impressed 😂
A fun & charming creature feature movie. An homage to 50s atomic age sci-fi horror. Solid practical FX. A definite cult classic. Very enjoyable. The sequels are ok too.
Tremors is a true genre classic. By this point in American filmmaking things were already well and truly in decline (IMO since the mid-60s), culturally, artistically, creatively, etc. All the best movies from this period know exactly where they fit within the broader genre timeline and simply reimagine, almost to perfection in 90 minutes, the work of their predecessors.
The best aspect of this film is how doesn't take itself overly seriously and refuses to insult the viewer's intelligence while doing so. As such, scenes with a little girl unwittingly riding a pogo stick into danger become charmingly campy and not part of some tedious filmmaking checklist of your standard horror flick. Also, most solid films have excellent pacing. This movie was paced perfectly. I expected nothing from this film when I rented it. It was a desperation rental. I love being pleasantly surprised by movies like this one.
In my first draft of the script for this video, I had what probably would have been a 2-3 minute long rant about what happened with the FX company, Amalgamated Dynamics, when they were hired to do the prequel to The Thing. They did some amazing practical work that some studio head decided needed to be totally replaced by CGI, and it’s still one of the greatest special effects crimes of the century.
That is one of my favorite things about Tremors. They took a lot of care with the practical effects and it really holds up. The graboids traveling through the sand, and the chaos is absolutely believable!
Greetings Myk. Hope to see another crossover, although T.U.G. skips back and forwards in time. 'Tremors' is one of those films that looks like a cheap knock off and so you avoid it in cinemas. Then you find out how wrong you were when word of mouth finally reaches you after the VHS/DVD release. Even Gene Siskel gave it a negative review at first, only to correct that later and say he had no idea why his initial review was not enthusiastic. The script and film making hold up to multiple viewings. It's a real treat.
I was very excited to be a part of this video! I like how Eric describes how Tremors doesn't get too wrapped up in either the horror or comedy genres. It's balanced perfectly and probably helped with its word of mouth success. Like "you just gotta see this movie! It's hard to explain"
Regarding Jack Palance. I think he would have been too tough and imposing as Earl. In the sense that nothing on Earth (or below it) could possibly intimidate him.
I think this video suffered from that other man joining in. Not cool. In fact I skipped that man’s promotion for his channel and hope it’s going to happen again. Back slapping and pushing other RUclipsrs into others presentations doesn’t usually work for me.
Your buddy from I Miss The 90's channel is peddling wokeness over there. In his review of X-Men the animated series he mentions homophobia, racism, xenophobia and then says the Friends Of Humanity were basically neo Nazis and Wolverine should have killed them. Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

Thoroughly enjoyed, guys! My friend was asking me to rewatch this with him the other day and I turned him down - maybe you guys have turned me around!

Good practical effects age so much better than bad CGI! This is just solid filmmaking in practice!

Great video, not only one of my favourite creature movies but a brilliant buddy movie.

“Only a Sith deals in absolutes” that… is an absolute… You sir, are a Sith.
The X-Men has always been a civil rights allegory, though. It’s not even subtle about it.
