Most people do not recognize quality, in glass, in furniture, etc. Murano may need a public relations program in addition to its artists.

As a glassblower with friends who are masters in murano that are slowly starving, and having been privileged to chat with master rossi repeatedly what pisses me off most is the city of Venice not cracking down super hard on those sales galleries.
Hello Josh! I am a glasblower too, I had my own glass-studio in Oslo-Norway for many years after working at Costa Boda, Sweden. You always have to deal with ingnorance when working in a Glass-hut making everything by hand. But I think what this man in the shop is pointing out here on that horse, -that it should be perfect UNDER is totally MISLEADING!
That only means that in Morano you have very good glass-grinder...( do you say that in English? The machin to make it perfect under... )apart from this incredible handycraftwork they are doing in Morano, they have a good machin too...It is difficult to espress this for me in Engish, sorry. But what I want to say is that a glass-object does NOT have to be perfect under to have good quality, but that means you are working without any maskins at all, like in the old days. So to see this little glass-bult under drinking-glass etc. is some of the charm of it...I think- do you see what I mean? Many regards from Camilla

I follow a lot of eBay resellers on you tube who swear by their expertise in Murano glass. Not once have I seen the label with the number of the work shop on it. So I gather all those labels they show me are fake except the one with the number shop on it ? Valuable info thank you. 👍🏻❤️
Not all. There have been a series of different official labels since the nineteen thirties. The abate zanetti school on murano can help id real ones

This is a trade that is disappearing rapidly, Counterfeiting Fenton glass is a crime. More videos like this is needed. Lots of people are not aware of this scam. This art of glass making should continue.!The elders should start small classes so that young students can learn this art. It’s would be a shame if it disappeared.
I made sure I bought my glasses on the isle of Miranda from the artisan .

I’ve been to Murano in person and toured their glass galleries. It is truly amazing what these artists are able to do. Walking around Venice as well, it looked like there were a lot of shops selling poorly-crafted fakes. Unfortunately there is no way to really know if you’re purchasing a Murano piece unless you go to the island yourself, you can’t even trust the so-called expert highlighted in this video or the label that is easy to be ripped off. If you want to support Murano artists, just go to the island of Murona on your own if you ever visit Venice and do not purchase from the tourist-centered shops in Venice.
I have always been in awe of glass blowing! The metamorphosis of molten glass into beautiful artwork is mesmerizing and calming. This exceptional talent needs to be preserved for the future. We must aspire to pass it down to new generations and continue this beautiful legacy!
A simple law change would take care of this. Just like how the label “Bordeaux wine” can only be put on wine made in Bordeaux, it should be done with Morano glass as well. Italians should protect their heritage.
We have a beautiful vase bought on the island at one of the glass workshops in the 1980's. Phew!
When the shop merchants were telling their lies about the glass directly to the narrator, I noticed that they crossed their arms tightly in front of themselves. That's a posture which gives the person doing it a sense of security. It doesn't necessarily mean they are lying, but it does means that for some reason they are experiencing some anxiety/ insecurity in those moments. Something to take note off.
I also know now that I have some totally fake little Murano glass fish and sweets, which were exported to Canada from Italy....but not- apparently- Murano.
Caveat Emptor ...buyer beware is a good motto to remember.
I noticed the way they crossed their arms and made a mental note: Check sales person's body language!
It is unfortunate to see that the people who are contributing for the downfall of murano glassmaking are also Italian business owners. It is right to say that Chinese fake everything, but just because there are people (like this Italian shops ) buy them. A little bit of more Patriotism and less greedy would do just fine
So many fake Murano pieces on ebay. Buyer beware. Italy is not doing itself a favor by allowing these shops to lie and cheat tourists. Murano glasswork is already struggling with the lack of artists. Oh and be careful about purses. Lots of fakes there as well.
Notice how those 2 dealers had their arms crossed when they were asked if it was true Murano? Crossing the arms is body language for deception , or lying.
I was in Murano around 2008 and I saw rhe chinese characters on the boxes in back alleys. But sometimes you could spot the difference.

OK, so a couple of things. First, the good news; Murano glass is still pretty healthy. Even this article stated that there are 150 workshops remaining. As to why there is so much imitation Murano glass around, the answer's a little more complicated. First, Venice hasn't really helped itself, the City authorities are happy to take tourist dollars in whatever form it comes. Second, in comparison to the brands you mentioned, individual glassmakers, or even co-operatives, could never afford the lawyers to aggressively prosecute forgeries.
I'll leave you with this though, the islands of Murano are only about a 10 minute boat ride from Venice, there are still plenty of people happy to make the trip to ensure getting the genuine article. I hope this is at least slightly reassuring.

Simple. The city government values tourist dollars more than protecting its artisans. Just as true of maskmakers jewelry smiths and carpenters as glassblowers. Pure dickhead greed.

I went to a small workshop in Murano, they do every thing to protect their craft, not even allowing photo's. The only way to be sure you are buying Murano is to buy it from the maker
They say, only two masters one is his relatives.. Oh wow... I live in Murano, I was born here and I work the glass on the torch, and I paint the glass, I make workshops, and I can tell you there are more than two masters, Lino Tagliapietra, Livio Seguso, Davide Salvadore, Davide Fuin, we lost Pino Signoretto months ago, Dino Rosin, and some others... Make these craftspeople cultural protégés, offer subsidies, etc.
They are part of your unique cultural heritage and deserve to be better protected.

This problem is universal; whatever the valued artistic object, it it is on demand you will find cheaper and fake (and obviously crude) variants of the originals. Industrialization made it worse but to be fair, most people aren't that selective as to note the difference (if they were or they cared, they would notice). Hand made objects with real artistic input are time consuming, demand years of learning and are generally unique and not mass produced. Also people is no longer able or willing to neither wait the required time (in the old days you prepaid for a commissioned work) nor to pay the required sums (obviously it gave prestige, it wasn't merely utilitarian).
Honestly, this art form is a dying art. It’s very sad. I’ve visited only bona fide glass blowing facilities in Murano several times. My purchases are sealed with the authentic mark of Murano. Treasured pieces. These studios have things that could never be recreated by machine. Chandeliers and sculpture in these studios is to die for-uniquely Italian
It has really just shifted a bunch over the last 50 years. Glassblowing is flourishing in several areas. The USA, Australia, Canada have oodles of glassmakers of all disciplines, some of which I would argue are just as skilled if not more so than the old Maestros while most of the factories that employ glass artisans can still be found in Poland and Chechia.
Yes I suppose you are right, Ross Delano, that there are so many talented glass blowers these days and I’m excited about the resurgence of this fine art. I’m speaking about Italy specifically because their studios are forced to compete with cheap fakes on the island itself. Anyway-good day to you!
As a glass blower I'm here to tell you that a no it isn't and b there was a seventy year period in murano during the eighteen hundreds where no furnaces were active and yet the global glass trade carried on. I wish people would stop saying glassblowing is dying its slightly older than Christianity quite literally 2100 years old at least.
I worked as a designer for an american glass factory that has an import division. I used to go to China to work in the glass factories and I saw entire containers being loaded of glass that had a "made in murano" sticker put on at the chinese factory.
I can always tell if it is chinese glass and when in Murano a few years ago it is accurate that at *least* 80% is chinese

Glassblowing really isn’t a dying art form, it’s expanding to other parts of the world at a crazy rate. There are master glassblowers in America with just as much talent as Murano artists. Support your local glassblowers! ❤️
The Venice one's are not just important for their skills, but also for the story (and history) they tell throough their pieces. So ofc get stuff from your local artisans, but get stuff in Murano too if you want a piece of history.

Glass sellers are lying to the public and saying they are genuine when they are not , isn't that a crime
talking so superficially about this problem is not correct. I am a glass master, I was born in Murano, I live in Murano and I have been working as a glassmaker for 28 years. The gentleman who should be an expert in the first scene in his shop shows a plate with raised edges that yes it was made in Murano but not by hand but with a machine called a centrifuge. As for the horse's head, the one bought in the other shop is certainly Chinese but the one he showed us as a comparison is equally questionable, both for the features and for the level of finishing on the bottom which could certainly be better. To be a glass expert it is not enough to run a shop for a few years.

I see tons of Murano online. I think maybe, unless you have it in your hands to compare with a China made piece, it can be hard for a new collector or reseller to even tell. But no one should list as Murano unless they know for sure. That being said, I have bought a piece with a Murano foil sticker ... looked nothing like the sticker that was in this video. And I assumed it was real. What if I want to resell. If there is no database or catalogue from the makers to see what they actually make, how can I check. A google search shows me the item I bought listed as Murano...and so on and on it goes.
Loads are listed as “Murano style”. How do people feel about that?
Just google Murano stickers over the years...I'm trying to figure out if any of these pieces are signed...he said also very smooth bottom. I think I just gleaned alot watching the glassblower cut the glass, roll and shape it. That was a real treat! Makes me want to go to the antique mall! Lol
@@manifestingbeautifullife2187 good idea for googling the sticker types. Thanks. So often when I google to learn about a company, all my results are only things for sale. Even when I look for “history of xxx” or some such search. Trying to decipher markings and signatures on glass, pottery, metal etc is a nightmare!
Not to mention a certain genre of beautiful crystal vases are said to be the result of "Murano" contracting with TeleFlorist. In the online world, what exactly does Murano mean? About nothing! It is great to know about the stickers but over time those can be lost. I am no great collector and buy at thrift stores, that which I appreciate. I am not reselling.

See this is why I only deal in Murano jewelries, far less likely to be fake since there is no fake market for them. People who purchase murano jewelry (like me) are very particular people so there is less motivation for counterfeits to do them. So it's much easier to spot a real vs. a fake. Jewelry also has the benefit of being more varied since the items are small so more creativity can go into them, making it more difficult to just fake them based on copies.

I have a muralist pheasant which is unusual in that its tail isn't the 12" to 14" but 27", the only one I've ever seen online for sale was a badly damaged one in Beverly Hills for $3500....im thinking the value is how do you get it from italy without damaging it?.
i would gladly move there and work for the next 20 +years to help keep the techniques of masters alive

Surely the stickers fall off over time so how can you tell if its authentic or not in antique stores, and thrift shops?
They specifically stated telltale signs, such as the round uniform vase is only made by machine and not blown by hand. And the bottom of the pieces are smooth, not lumpy like it's been machine made.
Same problem when my friend took a table at a craft fair to show her unique, hand made glass, but all the attention went to a table of brighter machine made Chinese glass.
Sounds like a way to keep others out.

Faking murano glass is a sad thing but probably not in humanity's top 10 billion biggest issues at the moment... :-/
In a country the size of Italy, and with all the immigrants, surely they can find enough apprentices to fill the need. If they need special permits or dispensations for under-age workers, lobby for them. There's something not being fully disclosed.
Everyone wants to be a manager. Manager is safe, long life. Noone really wants to blow glass 8-9 hours a day. For a lifetime. And struggling to fight with low tier mold-blown or mass-produced glass from china at the same time. Hard job - low wages. Whos gonna want to chime in!? Plus noone will ever just take a man from the street into the shop to show all secrets and teach him only to find him leaving abroad and selling all those know-hows to ruin your craft even further.
@@GL455_ This has already happened with Murano glass blowers defecting to Canada and calling their style "Chalet Glass. I had a piece that I swore up and down that it was Murano and it was kinda weird seeing it blown in the 1,000year old style of Murano, but labeled as Chalet Glass.

Such precious skills should be taken up by the UN under preservation program ! We need more consevation of indigenous arts ! We can popularise them by showcasing in movies and also zeroing Duty on them !

According to online sources...which may or may not mean anything....Murano glass factories contracted with TeleFlorist to make very nice vases. We find these in thrift stores, etc. The vases are heavy, nicely done and very attractive. They appear to be machine made. So, what the heck is going on? I cannot imagine mass produced glassware such as this could be produced by hand. Are these things Murano glass or not? Are there Chinese factories at Murano who simply use the place name?
It could be that the pieces were designed by a Murano designer and created elsewhere by machine

The label on the horse immediately tells you it's a copy. I get very suspicious when I see tons of certain designs in the secondhand market. There seems to be a flood of Murano birds and clowns which leads me to believe they are mostly copies. The workshop number is 33. LOL Figures.

Well, if that red vase is flame, Cut by someone like myself, the rim will be perfect. I’ve been making glassware for over 20 years…. I also specialize in.Effetre 104 . And I import a great deal of my material to America from.Murano. And so the truth is glassmaking is still a secret, and both the consumer and the retailer don’t exactly know the truth…. If you want real.Murano glass . There are shops on the island where flame workers still make stuff and will make it custom for you.. I making a good Rim is one of the first things you strive for as in Glassblower. And yes, it can be done by hand, but it requires a great deal of experience. You do not need a machine.. it’s funny though how this guy says it it was made by a machine. Beale glass was here

Why can't a person be content with what they can afford? Why participate in cheating? Nothing wrong with having "Murano inspired" art; nothing wrong with buying Chinese imports - one is cheating oneself and genuine artist when one purchases fakes, such as those shown in the video. So, again, why?

I got Original Murano glass from master glassmaker who made my necklace pendant in front of me and let me shoot him in the process. He also provided me with a warranty card with my purchase.😊

Counterfeits can be made anywhere, even right in Italy, or eastern Europen countries. It's presumptuous and ignorant to just paint everything made in China with the same brush. There are world class glass makers and potters in China, except they are only commissioned work for the private eyes and cost eye watering amount of money. Don't forget these glass making techniques go back to 1000s of years in China.
We are hoping to restore faith in Murano glass, at least in the UK market. We are a reputable company and all products arrive with a holographic identification sticker and certificate of authenticity! The counterfeit market is very harmful.

Been a Murano Glass collector for decades, and it is sad that Chinese garbage glass that is supported by ignorant tourists, is damaging this tradition of Centuries! Last time in Murano in 2021, was devastating to see how many glassmakers are closing their businesses. We as tourists need to make a decision, if we cannot afford a piece of Murano glass we should not and shall not purchase Chinese rubbish! this action affects the living of families of artists!! STOP BUYING CHINESE CRAP!!!
You want some high quality Murano glass, but don't even understand the medium enough to know what constitutes high quality glass? Congrats, you played yourself. Spotting Murano glass in a pile of Chinese glass is like spotting a lion in the gazelle enclosure.
