I have a theory.
When the team first failed, Barry used the Speedforce to reverse the synchronisation of the Unity so that Victor could undo it from the inside.
But, as most examples of theoretical physics display, changing or altering time in any way plays havoc with the Space/Time continuum.
Bruce seems to have a connection with this Knightmare timeline version of himself and I think the reason is... *Barry* .
When he breaks the sound barrier, sound boom. When he broke the time barrier, time boom.
I think, although he reversed the effects of the Mother Boxes, what he actually did was create a separate branch in the timeline, one where the Unity had been formed, the Earth is conquered and Darkseid gains the Anti-Life Equation.
Another thing that comes to my attention is how Steppenwolf described the Equation. The Key to dominating all will and all life throughout the *Multiverse* .
This insinuates that if Darkseid wins in one reality, he will eventually win in all realities.
What Batman sees is *his* timeline's future self living in a reality affected by the Anti-Life Equation and Darkseid's influence, but due to the time branch fluctuation caused by Flash, he also gets to experience a minor amount of the emotions and memories of that reality, linking him with this alternate version like a time stamp.
This does mean there's a chance to undo it, by stopping Darkseid head on in their current timeline, but if they fail, the branched timeline comes true, the Earth is Unified under Apokalips. The end.
This describes the most dire situation in a superhero franchise since Infinity War.
